“Think Hero” reviews “Hard Hearted Hannah”
Entertainment Weekly Special Vampire Issue
Entertainment Weekly’s issue of August 7 will be a vampire special.
This week’s Entertainment Weekly delivers the ultimate guide to vampires. You’ll find interviews with the authors behind Twilight and True Blood, our list of the 20 greatest bloodsuckers ever, and Anne Rice’s pick for the best new vampire — as well as a talk with her about how she revolutionized the vampire legend decades ago with Interview with a Vampire.
With Twilight a phenomenon, True Blood attracting converts by the millions, and hordes of new vampire projects looming in the shadows, bloodsuckers are haunting every corner of our lives: bookstores, television, movies, and more. Why has pop culture thrown open its door and invited them in? “The traditional vampire story, with monsters and victims, chases and chills, is more plain fun,” says True Blood’s executive producer Alan Ball. “But they can often reveal the general state of the cultural psyche.”
Vampires are such versatile symbols now that they can express both conservative and liberal views. Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight novels are steeped in her Mormon values. But True Blood speaks in part for gays and, as Ball puts it, “eight years of institutionalized demonization of pretty much any group that wasn’t on the bus with Mr. Bush.”
It may come as a surprise to learn that Meyer – reigning queen of pop culture’s vampire coven – has an uneasy relationship with them. Back in 2003, when she was writing the first draft of Twilight, she refused to show it to her husband. “I was embarrassed,” she said. “It was about vampires.” In fact, last year, she told EW that her great wish was to reclaim some time to write something new. “Look, I’m not just a vampire girl,” she said emphatically. “I can do other worlds.”
Laurell K. Hamilton, author of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter books, has her own thoughts on the Twilight phenomenon. “Stephenie Meyer has come and she’s taken the genre that I sort of pioneered. Her original audience was 11- and 12-year-olds, so she – very rightly – sanitized the genre. She took out a lot of the sex and violence, especially for the first book…I ask people, Why has this really captured you? What I heard from all ages is that it was very romantic that he was willing to wait for her and that there was no sex. They like the idea that [Bella] was like the fairy princess and [Edward] is the handsome prince that rides in and saves her. The fact that women are so attracted to that idea – that they want to wait for Prince Charming rather than taking control of their own life – I find that frightening.”
When asked why people find vampires so appealing, Anne Rice (author of the series The Vampire Chronicles) says, “I think people are intrigued by what they would do if they were offered the opportunity to be a vampire. Would they be willing to drink human blood in order to be immortal? Maybe they would.”

The governor of Texas is a Truebie
Gov. Rick Perry conceded Thursday that he’s a fan of the hit HBO series “True Blood.”
The series is about the coexistence of humans, vampires and supernatural misfits in a small Louisiana town. “My wife watches True Blood and I from time to time take a peep at it,” he said before winking his left eye. “It’s an interesting show and I love the music.”
Perry referenced the HBO show at a local fund-raiser for the Dallas County Republican Party. He was trying to make a point about the need for Texas to have a thriving film industry.
“I kind of hate to ask this, but do you all watch True Blood?” Perry asked the crowd.
When several people reacted, he said: “A few of you are telling the truth.”
Perry then pointed out that the series, along with the movie “No Country for Old Men” was filmed in other states. “It’s filmed in Louisiana” he said of True Blood.
Perry said the Legislature is putting more resources in the state’s film industry and would soon be landing all kinds of movies and television shows. The governor and his wife, Anita, would be happy to know that parts of True Blood’s second season were actually filmed in Dallas, including a scene atop the Adolphus Hotel.
It’s official: True Blood Season 3
It took some time, but HBO has finally made the official announcement that the hit show True Blood has been picked up for a third season!
Alan Ball is planning to shoot the first episode of Season 3 before Christmas. True Blood will be back with the third season in 2010.

True Blood actor writes comic book “Lucid”
True Blood’s Michael McMillian (Rev. Steve Newlin) attended Comic-Con 2009 in San Diego last week, but he was not present at the True Blood panel. Michael had another reason to be there. Saturday afternoon he attended the Archaia Studios Panel where Zachary Quinto (Heroes and Star Trek) announced that his company, Before the Door Productions, is partnering with comic book publisher Archaia Studios to launch a series of new comic book projects.
The first two books to arise from this deal are M. Murder is Dead, written by Victor Quinaz, and Lucid, written by Michael McMillian. Quinto and his partners, Neal Dodson and Corey Moosa, helped develop the two stories and remained heavily involved in all aspects of production.
Michael tells The Vault about “Lucid”: “The story is set in an alternate universe where major world powers have secret agents working for them, trained in the ancient art of sorcery and magic. It’s a blend of James Bondian action/adventure with hints of modern day fantasy. Cool stuff. I’m really excited about it. I hope faithful “True Blood” fans will check it out. “Lucid” should debut in the winter of 2010. Since the book is still far off, I am still in the scripting process. A yet-to-be-determined artist will do the artwork.”
Neal Dodson comments in an interview with IGN: “These are stories that Michael and Victor originated and brought to us. We helped them shape the stories and put them together, and once we entered into the partnership with Archaia, Stephen Christy and the guys over there were helpful in getting them to the point where they’re now ready to make them into these books we’re so excited about.”
Corey Moosa ads: “We talk to Victor and Michael almost every day. We’ve known them at least as long as we’ve known each other – at least 13 years. Talking to them is a pleasure, and we work further to develop the stories and make them as fun and interesting as possible. Where Lucid and M. Murder first started are very different from where they are right now, and we’re very pleased with the direction they’ve gone into.”
