Interview with Beyond The Pole’s Director

beyondthepole2 400x267 Interview with Beyond The Poles Director

On the set with Alexander Skarsgård

David L. Williams, director of Beyond the Pole, recently took the time to answer some questions for the Examiner where he talks about the film and what it was like to work with Alexander Skarsgård.

The film, which is based on a 6-part radio series, is about two explorers, Brian and Mark, that are setting out on the first carbon neutral, vegetarian, and organic expedition ever to attempt the North Pole. As a world first they have high hopes of getting into the Guinness Book of Records and, if all goes well, of saving the planet from Global Warming. Unfortunately, they have never done anything like this before. They hadn’t reckoned on the polar bears, the competitive gay Norwegians (one being Alexander Skarsgård), or on Mark’s rapidly loosening grip on reality.

Williams, who co-wrote the film with Neil Warhurst, was inspired to make the film after he read James Lovelock’s theories of Gaia and how the planet’s ability to support us was threatened by industrialization. This marked the beginnings of his awareness of the idea of global warming. He later saw Al Gore’s film, The Inconvenient Truth and was deeply moved, but felt that there wasn’t anyone in the theater that wasn’t already convinced of his argument. So, David and his partner Helen decided to make a film for the “unconverted”.

Shooting took place in both the UK and Greenland. They spent two weeks roughing it in Greenland 800 miles from the nearest village. Their single communal bathroom consisted of a bucket with a bin liner, riding to their filming locations for a half an hour via dogsled, and having local hunters accompany them to ward off the locals…polar bears. David states:

“Plumbing is rudimentary in Greenland (there is none – everything freezes), so first dibs on the bucket became something of a sought after luxury. These things become extremely important by day 10 I assure you. After a full, greasy breakfast (you see what I mean about getting to the toilet first) it would be straight onto the dog sledges and out onto the sea ice. This was one of my favorite parts of the day and would have been as romantic as it sounds had it not been for the fact that working dogs can poop while they are running. There were 20 dogs pulling each sledge, and most of our journeys were at least half an hour.

diane 393x300 Aunjanue Ellis, Season Ones Vampire Diane to join The Mentalist

Aunjanue Ellis as Diane with Stephen Moyer in True Blood

During Season 1 of True Blood, we met several vampires and one of them was an old flame of Bill’s, Diane.  She met her end in Episode 5  but Aunjanue Ellis, who played Diane is finding other parts to fill out her repertoire as she has joined the cast of the CBS drama the Mentalist in a recurring role as the new boss.

She will play the beautiful but tough new head of the California Bureau of Investigation who is installed after the resignation of the unit’s former chief, Virgil Minelli, played by Gregory Itzin. (Itzin recently signed on to return to “24,” reprising his role as former President Charles Logan.)

She is brought in to restore discipline and morale to the division after the murder of three agents, including Agent Sam Bosco (Terry Kinney), and will be the new supervisor of Agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney).

The series revolves around Lisbon’s team and the help they get from independent consultant Patrick Jane (Simon Baker).

Ellis’ debut on “Mentalist” is tentatively slated for April.

The actress, who appeared in “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3,” recently co-starred on Broadway in “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” by August Wilson, and wrapped the action film “Game of Death.”

Posted by Lynnpd On November - 30 - 2009

!cid_E7B0F3C9-2DE2-4D5D-8C0D-7C71BB61B03F

The True Blood players on Twitter are pulling together Bites for Blood, the first ever virtual blood drive held on Twitter.  Our goal is simple: we’re trying to fill a virtual blood vial with over a half-million drops of blood donated by our Twitter friends to help raise awareness for the American Red Cross.

They need your help to get the word out!

Bites for Blood kicks off on Thursday, December 3 at 9:00pm CDT with one night of virtual kissing and biting booths manned by the True Blood characters on Twitter.

Participants simply:

  • Choose the human or vampire you’d like to have kiss or bite you.
  • Click on their badge.
  • By clicking, you will be directed back to Twitter where you’ll tweet your support and receive a kiss or bite from the character you chose.
  • The page will remain open until Sunday, December 5th at 9pm CDT so that you can continue donating drops to Bites for Blood.

It’s an easy and fun way to show support for the Red Cross. And if it inspires participants to take the next step and make a real life blood donation or contribution to the Red Cross, then even better!

For more information on Bites for Blood and how to get involved, go to http://truebloodtwitter.com.

They’ve set up links on the page to help make it easy for people to tweet the link or share it on Facebook!

Hope we can count on your support, and hope to see you on Thursday night!

Picture0006 True Blood Nominated for Producers Guild Award

While the nominees are largely a familiar and traditional lot, without a single new Fall 2009 drama or comedy on the list, the PGA did manage to recognize a few fresh names, including HBO’s “True Blood .

Also, The Norman Felton Producer of the Year Award in Episodic Television - Drama nods are led by last year’s winner, AMC’s “Mad Men,” while ABC’s “Lost” and “Dexter” are also repeat nominees. As with last year, “30 Rock” will be competing against NBC’s “The Office,” HBO’s “Entourage” and Showtime’s “Weeds.” The category’s only new nominee is Showtime’s “Californication.”

The two non-fiction categories are also near carbon copies. PGA Producer of the Year Award in Non-Fiction Television “60 Minutes” will have to go against “Deadliest Catch,” “This American Life” and “Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List,” with A&E’s “Intervention” as the only fresh face.

And in the race for PGA Producer of the Year Award in Live Entertainment and Competition Television, “The Colbert Report” will try to repeat against returning nominees “The Amazing Race,” “Project Runway” and “Top Chef,” plus “fresh” nominee “American Idol.”

More on set of “The Caller” with Stephen Moyer

Posted by Lynnpd On November - 29 - 2009

Stephen Moyer with Eva

Stephen Moyer with Eva

Puerto Rican Twilighter, Eva had another adventure on the set of “The Caller” today when she had the opportunity to watch the making of another scene. When she arrived to the San Juan location, the cast was rehearsing a scene that had to be shot and finished today. The scene took place outside and included Luis Guzman, Rachelle Lefevre and Stephen Moyer. She says that “she was real close this time to the action and saw every rehearsed take and shoot.” She says further that, “in between takes, they had their make-up retouched and carried little hand-held fans to keep cool (it was hot this morning).” “At the end of scene, it was a wrap for Stephen Moyer and everyone on set applauded his work and had a photo shoot before he left. Later, Rachelle and Stephen exchanged phone numbers and talked for some time, before going to their lunch break. Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin are leaving Puerto Rico now that his filming is complete.”
