Alan Ball: Season 2 will focus on early years of Bill and Eric

Posted by Shadaliza On April - 12 - 2009

In a recent interview Alan Ball revealed that Season 2 of True Blood will focus on the early years of Bill and Eric Northman. From casting calls we already know that production was looking for Vikings and actors to play out roles in flashbacks from the 1930’s and 1920’s. It would indeed be very interesting to learn more about the history and back stories of the two main vampires of the show, specially because Charlaine Harris never touched that argument in her Sookie Stackhouse books.

Alan Ball says: ‘Vampires are sexy but they will do anything without constraint, without morals. Yet they are objects of fancy for a lot of women,’ he muses, with a laugh.

Ball never intended to make a film out of Harris’ books.

The 51-year-old writer-producer explains why he turned to television instead: ‘It’s more expensive to produce a film, which takes a longer time to get off the ground compared to a TV series. Plus, you are constantly making compromises to it.’

‘Charlaine has created many interesting characters in a world so sexy and profound. It’s impossible to tell such a great story in two hours.’

Can’t wait to see anything about the early years of Bill and Eric. Thank you Alan Ball for taking us back to the beginning…..season 2 sounds as though it might be very interesting.

I love that Alan fouc more on Bill than Charlaine did in the books

As for Eric…. As long as he stays away from Sookie and don’t put his hands where they absolutley not belong, I’ll be fine with him. Will be interesting to see his flashbacks too :-)

    LMAO!!!

I am totally with Sanna on Eric.

And I would love to see more of Bill and his early years. Thanks AB. Oh, and may be we will get many flashes of Bill going all vampire-y. Oh my! Bill is always sexy, but his hotness quotient reaches infinity when he gets fangy.
His fangs go *click* and I go *THUD!* :D

I’m totally with Sanaa on the Eric issue. That makes it official. I can’t wait to see Bill’s backstory brought to life. Same with Eric. What’s not interesting about a Viking.

So, Sanna, you want info about Bill and I from back when he used to be fun, huh? We’ll see what we can do!

Really helps to read the primary source article:

Ball says: ‘I wanted the series to mirror the book because that was what attracted people to it in the first place.’

Although the vampires represent the outcasts in True Blood, he says he did not draw any parallels to real life.

Instead, he adds: ‘True Blood is not just a story about fangs. The series explores the concept of being immortal and how they live their lives. The book and series are about that.’

This should lay to rest any disregard AB has for CH and her creation.

I don’t doubt Alan loves the books, he has said so himself that he does, but I also think he will do his own thing

Let’s face it, no matter what A.B. does it will be fantastic! I’m loving how the T.B. show is adding in things that C.H. did not. The characters are all there…. it just makes it all the more fun (having read all of the books) to watch and see the differences. I’m hoping that Bill stays involved in T.B. for ever! That doesn’t mean that Eric can’t have more and more involvement…. but Bill… YUMMY!

    Oh, Eric can be involved

    Just not with Sooikie :-)

I believe that AB likes also character of Eric and maybe he will be more involved one day…(I am sorry for these unfaithful thoughts today, but I just spent this beautiful sunday afternoon with the book Dead to the world and you know how it looks with Eric there.)

He may like Eric, but Bill is his favorite, ha ha ha *rubbing hands together*

  14. Jeanne says:

It´s right, but he has to realize that his favourite vamp is the best in interaction with another one (and you know which one) and it is good reason for the involvement. Hehe

Hahahaha, Sanna, like you more and more every day gf :) This is starting to look like a middle school dance- boys on one side, girls on the other.

Seems the bottom line is that AB and CH owe all of us fealty for debating and promoting their works.

Debate = more series years = more books = more web site hits =more series years = more books = more web site hits.

After years of watching ‘guy friendly babes’ it’s about time us gals had some equal time;)

I agree with you Sanna. I can’t wait to see more back story on Bill, I think it’s going to be exciting. I also want to see some on Eric, but Eric better stay away from Sookie. The more AB makes True Blood his own & changes it from the books, the happier I’ll be.
    I believe in AB!!

  21. Lilbooth says:

AB knows that Eric is an integral part of the story, Sookie’s story. This show is not based off The Chronicles Of Bill Compton. This is Sookie’s story and through the magic of serial TV we have had the pleasure to look deeper into the supporting characters, but it is still remains Sookie’s story

I find it presumptuous for fans of the show and books to claim to know or demand how AB or CH will decide to write Eric, Bill, Sookie or any other character.

While I would never demand that the show be a rehash of the books, I REALLY hope they don’t abandon them all together. I like the character of Eric, and I don’t think the first season is the best way to judge his character…he was hardly in it. I also agree with Lilbooth…the show isn’t about Bill, or only about bill/sookie….it’s about sookie. I’m hoping against hope they don’t turn it into a show JUST about them, and only about THEIR relationship.

  23. kay says:

The books have always been about Sookie’s POV but everybody has to remember that the show is based on the books so it’s not all about Sookie’s story. I always felt like the other characters take up most of the show and It is a character driven show which is like a theme of AB’s. The show was never about Bill but some of us want more screen time for him. It’s not like Bill and Sookie fill up the scenes a majority of the minutes on the show.

  24. Sanna says:

Well, I’m not gonna lie here…I do watch True Blood mostly for Bill/Sookie. I do love the show in general, and I like/love all the supporting characters, but without Bill/Sookie, the show wouldn’t be nearly as good as it is now. They are the key, IMO

    “The Chronicles Of Bill Comptom”

    LOL LOL

    I wish…. hehe

  25. Blooddrunk says:

‘The Chronicles of Bill Compton’??? Why not? They had an ‘Angel’ series after all… so why can’t we have our Bill’s own series. They could explore all those years when he used to be ’so much fun’. *winks*

If TB goes the books way (I hope not), I will so gladly dump TB in favor of ‘The Chronicles of Bill Compton’. Bill is my main draw to the show, along with the Bill/Sookie relationship. Without Bill/Sookie the show would be nothing for me. And Bill is the only reason I finished the books, before TB even started I must add. It was a horror to say the least.

LOL ~ your line about Bill and being ‘fangy’. I too experience something when I hear the fangs ‘click’.
Fav ‘fangy’ scene: when policeman asks if he can shine the light on Sookie’s neck and Bill looks at her ~ ‘click’. The rest is just ‘fangy’ Bill heaven.

  27. Sanna says:

Ooh, that’s a good one. I also have a soft spot for the scene in the finale episode when he wants to heal her and is about to bite his arm and then there’s that “click!” sound, I just LOOOVE that sound. I always mimic it….every time, LOL
