True Blood wins GLAAD Award for Outstanding Drama Series

Posted by Lynnpd On March - 19 - 2011

True Blood was awarded Outstanding Drama Series at the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards round of honors by RÖKK VODKA MARRIOTT MARQUIS, in New York tonight, Saturday, March 19, 2011.

True Blood features numerous gay characters — some are human like Lafayette, played by Nelsan Ellis, and others are vampires, like Russell Edgington, the vampire king of Mississippi, played by Denis O’Hare. Denis O’Hare accepted the award on behalf of the show.

As for the rest of the honorees, the Excellence in Media Award went to Russell Simmons, and Ricky Martin walked away with a twofer. Tina Fey was on hand to accept the award for Outstanding Individual Episode (in a series without a regular LGBT character) for “Klaus & Greta,” an episode which not only saw Liz’s gay cousin come into town for a visit, but also (and this can’t be a coincidence, right?) saw Jenna agree to fake date none other than Mr. Oscar.

In addition to receiving the Vito Russo Award, the episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show in which Ricky discussed his memoir, his coming out and his life as a father took home the award for Outstanding Talk Show Episode.

Other winners from the positive LGBT-depicting night include Anderson Cooper, whose Anderson Cooper 360 series on gay teen suicides won for Outstanding TV Journalism, the Scissor Sisters, who won for Outstanding Music Artist, and O, The Oprah Magazine. Congrats, and keep up the good work!

The rest of this year’s GLAAD Media Awards will be divvied up in Los Angeles on April 10 and in San Francisco on May 14.

Congratulations True Blood!

This video has just surfaced with Stephen Moyer on red carpet at 61st Primetime Emmys from fall 2009. In the video, although difficult to hear, Stephen talks about TV dads and childhood vices and how he loved Candy Floss, which in the US is called “Cotton Candy”. He also liked the Brady Bunch as a kid, although he says he doesn’t remember much about it these days, except for opening title sequence.

True Blood nominated for 2011 Genesis Award

Posted by Lynnpd On February - 8 - 2011

The 25th annual Genesis Awards have just announced their nominees and True Blood has been recognized for Episode 3.07, “Hitting the Ground”.

The ceremony, put together by HSUS, celebrates “outstanding reporting and creative portrayals of animal protection issues in the news and entertainment media,” and pays tribute to the major news and entertainment media for producing outstanding works that raise public awareness of animal issues.

Media attention to animal protection issues has come a long way since The Genesis Awards was launched twenty-five years ago,” said Beverly Kaskey, senior director of the Hollywood office of The HSUS and executive producer of The 25th Anniversary Genesis Awards. “The fact that True Blood, a show about vampires, can illustrate the cruelty of dog fighting is a sure sign that a consciousness about animal concerns is permeating popular entertainment and culture like never before.”

Winners of the categories will be announced at the Genesis Awards held Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, Los Angeles, CA.

True Blood has been nominated in the following category:

DRAMATIC SERIES

  • LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT Inhumane Society – USA Network
  • LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT Beef – NBC
  • TRUE BLOOD Hitting the Ground – HBO

Video: Denis O’Hare presenting at the Writer’s Guild Awards

Posted by Lynnpd On February - 7 - 2011

In the video below, from last week’s Writer’s Guild Awards, we see Denis O’Hare on stage to present an award. After dancing across the stage to True Blood’s title song, “Bad Things” Denis steals the show with his comments.

He first announces that he is a vampire and it’s been two weeks since his last pint. He then asks the writers to consider the consequences of what they write. He talks specifically about his scene in Season 3 of True Blood when he, in his role of the vampire, Russell Edgington had a scene where he was covered in concrete at 4am. He urges them to also write scenes that might be more palatable to actors such as say, having a therapeutic massage, etc.

And, Denis had a few words to say about True Blood vs. Twilight vampires at the event:

Denis was quoted as saying: “Real vampires don’t sparkle, they don’t glisten,” Denis, told HollywoodLife.com exclusively. “They can’t go out in the day and they definitely aren’t celibate! Come on!

But even though Denis disagrees with Twilight’s take on the modern vampire, there is one thing the actor can totally relate to as a fellow vamp: crazy fan encounters!

People ask me to bite them,” Denis told us. “It happens a lot. In my rough neighborhood of Fort Greene in Brooklyn, I was inside a Bravo across the street from me and this big Dominican guy who was working there was like, ‘Hey man, can you bite me?’ And I’m like, ‘You’re not going to beat me up afterwards?’ But I did it, and we took a picture!
