True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgård is making a smart play for his next movie role in Brit Marlng & Zal Batmanglij’s “The East.”

Brit Marling currently has two Sundance hits in “Another Earth” and “Sound Of My Voice” and with a role in Robert Redford‘s forthcoming “The Company You Keep,” the actress/writer/producer is having the kind of year people dream of. And while she’s had her pick of the projects to take on this fall including Steven Soderbergh‘s “Magic Mike” and the Tom Cruise vehicle “One Shot,” getting the next project she penned with ‘Voice’ co-writer and director Zal Batmanglij moving has been a priority and it looks like it’s now beginning to come together with Skarsgård now boarding the film.

Details on the project are slim, but the story will revolve around a woman who infiltrates an eco-terrorist group called, you guessed it, The East. Skarsgård will play the group’s leader probably with some serious blue/green eye intensity (seriously, just try and look away).

The film will shoot in October and November, with Marling’s new home at Fox Searchlight backing the production as previously announced. As far as casting goes, it’s a solid choice. Skarsgård is a great actor who is certainly destined for bigger and better roles; his talent is far too good to just be contained on “True Blood.” As for Marling and Batmanglij, it seems they are under no pressure to cast up A-list stars in their pic to get it rolling which is encouraging and considering the cult leanings of ‘Voice’ this project appears to be a different approach on a pervasive group mentality. Exciting times ahead for sure. But before it starts, Marling will shoot ‘Company’ and Skarsgård will finish up the indie flick “What Maisie Knew” with Julianne Moore and Steve Coogan that is shooting now.

Skarsgardnews.com has confirmed that Alexander Skarsgård will be attending the September 10th Melancholia showing at the Toronto International Film Festival!

The film will be shown on Saturday, September 10 at 6:00pm.

True Blood’s Evan Rachel Wood will also attend the festival to publicize her film, Ides of March.

The 36th edition of TIFF runs from Sept. 8-18, and will screen a total of 336 films. There are 268 features and 68 shorts.

The celeb spotting at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is sure to be top-notch, as the lineup of actors, directors and musicians attending were announced Tuesday.

In addition to Alex and ERW, a “who’s who” of celebs will be heading to town for the festival, including: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Clive Owen, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel Weisz, Woody Harrelson, Viggo Mortensen, Glenn Close, James Franco, Jane Fonda, Gerard Butler and Jon Hamm. For the full list of attendees, click here.

True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgård will be on the cover of September’s, Wonderland’s “Priceless” issue which celebrates all the things that money can’t necessarily buy – specifically: talent, style, taste and supreme luxury.

Cover stars Kirsten Dunst and Alexander Skarsgård take the lead, talking sex, danger, nudity and apocalypse in light of their starring roles in Lars Von Trier’s epic Melancholia.

True Blood’s Alexander Skarsgård is still shooting What Maisie Knew in New York City and continues his team up with a young child actress in the film. Alex plays Maisie’s step-father, Julianne Moore’s new husband. Since he was a child actor himself, it would seem that he’s especially in tune to making a film set fun and interesting for kids.

Alexander Skarsgård’s upcoming film of ‘Melancholia’ is scheduled to be released  VOD (Video On Demand) on October 7th, one month before it hits theaters November 11, 2011.

The good news about this is that if you live in a flyover state that probably wouldn’t get “Melancholia” anyway, it means you can watch the movie right away and not long after it hits TIFF and the New York Film Festival. But on down side, it means that most will only experience Von Trier’s gorgeously shot film on a small screen, a shame really because this emotionally apocalyptic film might the director’s best looking effort in years and certainly deserves to be viewed in a theater. But realistically speaking, “Melancholia” was never going to light up the box office. A two hour plus film that is a metaphor for depression—even with a cast featuring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård and Udo Kier—there weren’t going be lines around the block for it.

For Oscar watchers, take note. The VOD bow won’t affect any potential campaign as the film already had its Oscar qualifying theatrical run very quietly in July in Los Angeles. A new U.S. poster—which looks exactly like every international iteration of the one-sheet so far—is below.

Alexander Skarsgård in Battleship

Alexander Skarsgård talks about his role of Stone Hopper in ‘Battleship” which is scheduled for release on May 18, 2012 .

Alex plays the older brother of Alex Hopper played by Taylor Kitsch. Alex’s character adds an integral element to the story, a subplot that should make audiences care as much about the human relationships in the movie as they do the battle scenes. “[Stone] is older. He’s already in the Navy. He’s stayed out of his brother’s business, but it’s now kind of time,” says Skarsgård.

Kitsch adds that younger brother Hopper is basically afraid of failure, and idolizes his clean-cut, perfect older brother to a fault where it’s holding him back and he’s not reaching his potential. “There’s literally a breaking point where it’s kind of, enough is enough. “

“That’s something my character was trying to avoid for years…’This is my path, you gotta find yours, you’re gonna make mistakes but hopefully you will learn something.’ But after a while it’s like, alright – enough. ‘Cause I see a lot of potential in the kid,” Skarsgard says.

“The thing with the brothers, if you don’t care about us, the movie’s gonna be s***, IMO,” Kitsch adds. “If you don’t care about the characters in the film, you can blow up this this and that 10 million times, but there’s no heart to it. It’s our job to do that.”

As far as the movie’s scope, the actors who’ve mainly starred in TV shows thus far have found it a challenge they’re ready to embrace. “How is it different? We don’t shoot most of our [True Blood] stuff on the U.S.S. Missouri,” Skarsgard says laughing. “Day 1: I land, go out on this gigantic barge 10 minutes offshore with cranes, boats, jet skis, 5,000 people, floating basecamps…I come from a shoot in Europe for a Lars Von Trier movie where the catering crew here is bigger than that entire crew—crazy!”
