Christopher Heyerdahl Answers Seven Questions

Posted by Lynnpd On June - 19 - 2012

One of the newest Authority members, tall, lanky and foreboding, Christopher Heyerdahl made his debut on this past Sunday’s episode of True Blood, “Authority Always Wins” as Dieter Braun. His soft-spoken, steely eyed demeanor makes his interrogation scene with Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer) all the more compelling, and chilling.

Offscreen, Heyerdahl is pleasant and thoughtful, the antithesis of his persona. Below he answers “7 Questions,” for ChannelGuide.

1. You’re at a magazine rack and can only pick three titles. Which ones do you choose?
The New Yorker, Vogue — especially the September issue — and I like some good house porn, so Dwell.

2. If your TV only carried three shows, which three would you have to have?
30 Rock, Damages and Mad Men.

3. What’s been your strangest fan encounter to date?
Fans have always been pretty cool. The neat thing is, the other night, I had Paul Reubens (a.k.a. Pee-wee Herman) come up and tell me that he really liked my work. That was pretty cool for me. He’s not really a fan, but he’s someone who appreciates my work, and whose work I appreciate. That’s always nice when you appreciate someone’s work and you want to compliment them, and they end up doing it to you first.

4. When’s the first time you were starstruck?
I was living in L.A. probably 15 years ago, and I was sitting in the Kings Road Café with a buddy of mine, and there was this kind of funny-looking, white-haired dude pedaling a bike along with sort of a goofy bicycle helmet and puffy workout pants that have elastic at the ankles. I’m staring at this guy, and I’m feeling very [drawn] to this guy. “Who is this?” He takes his helmet off, and it’s Steve Martin. I’m a huge fan [and] I’m trying not to stare, and he just stops right behind my buddy because we’re right at the entrance to the café, and he’s facing me. He’s staring at me. So I look at him, he looks at me, sort of smiles, nods, I smile and nod, then the moment was over and he goes into the café. I have no idea why, but it was just one of those moments when nothing was said, but it was a sweet connection.

5. What are three things you have to have in your fridge or pantry?
A seven-grain, made by myself, mixer of porridge. I need to have a currie mix, and a bottle of Armagnac.

6. You’re part of a lot of series that have rabid fan bases — “True Blood,” “Twilight,” “Stargate: Atlantis,” “Supernatural.” Is there one, you think, that is the most fervent or dedicated?
All these genre pieces have very passionate fans, and they’re not afraid to express themselves. So I really haven’t noticed a difference aside from age group, and some groups have more women than men. … They’re all passionate, which is great. There’s nothing like people who wear their heart on their sleeves. They have no problem telling you if they love or do not love the work that you’re doing. If they think it’s boring, you know very quickly. If they think it’s really great, you know, again, very quickly.

7. You play a lot of scary people. Do you feel obligated then to be extra nice and sunny in real life?
(Laughs) It’s a funny thing, because you never know when somebody is afraid of you or not. So many people go about hiding these things. No, I just love life, and I love sharing with my friends, people I love. It’s not really that difficult, and then I get to express the darker side of my personality in those kinds of characters. It works out really well.

Christopher Heyerdahl entered the True Blood stage last Sunday as Dieter Braun. This character is not part of the books by Charlaine Harris, so there is no indication of where his story will take us.  With CraveOnline he spoke his True Blood experience, his character and the Authority.

Crave Online: Tell us about Dieter Braun.

Christopher Heyerdahl: Basically with a group like The Authority, they need someone to search out the truth. And when you’re dealing with vampires, getting the truth is a bit of a tricky operation. It requires somebody very creative and passionate about getting the truth.

Dieter is definitely that man. He’s been around a long time. He knows what he’s doing. He enjoys his job but I’m not sure how much because when you’re dealing with interrogation, you don’t want to say that someone enjoys their job. It makes them sound like a bit of a sadist and that’s not him, but he definitely gets the job done.

Crave Online: What was Dieter on the page, and what were you able to bring to him?

Christopher Heyerdahl: Well, in the first episode where he’s introduced, it’s 502, you get a lot of information about Dieter and certainly in playing the scene with Stephen Moyer and working on the scene with Michael Lehmann [the director], we discovered a lot about the character. A lot of times that’s the way you figure out who these characters are when they haven’t been fleshed out through the time of seasons, you discover it as you go.

You can do all the research you want ahead of time and imagine where the character is and what he’s doing, but until you actually get into the room and start playing with excellent actors and excellent directors and together you create the character at hand. So he was a work in progress and he was a fascinating creature to discover.

Crave Online: Is there a lot of action with Dieter?

Christopher Heyerdahl: There’s a fair bit of action in Dieter’s storyline but mostly Dieter is for the most part very silent, direct and creative in the way that he gets his information. So he’s not really a man so much of flash action as much as an intellectual danger.

Crave Online: Did you get to shoot any of it in the south?

Christopher Heyerdahl: It’s all over. The necessity of a show like this, in order to make it, it’s a 15 day shooting schedule. We shoot on film and those are two things that create a wonderful richness to a show that we don’t normally see. We’ve come great advances in cameras.

You don’t have to shoot on film so much anymore but there’s a richness and a joy to actually working with film and smelling film. So you’re working both on site. We were down in Louisiana this year and also in studio so you get to have the real thing, the true light of that. Louisiana has got a very specific warmth and humidity and richness of light. Again, that was created in studio as well when we were in the bowels of the Authority lair.

Crave Online: How do Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgard welcome new cast members?

Christopher Heyerdahl: Well, we’re all taken out and they line us up and we have to run the gauntlet. It’s painful but if we survive it, we’re welcomed into the clan with open arms. I think that because they have to be naked all the time, they expect everyone else to take their clothes off, run the gauntlet and get a good spanking but if you take it like a man, everything is fine.

Crave Online: Does Dieter get to have some racy sexy scenes too?

Christopher Heyerdahl: I’d love to say he does but he does not. Other people get to dive into that skin filled sexy bloody passionate world that we come to expect every day in “True Blood.” My naked time seems to be more in “Hell on Wheels” strangely enough. The Swede was naked last year and he’ll be naked again this year, so perhaps they felt it was redundant to have Dieter get down to his skivvies.

We can’t wait to see Christopher Heyerdahl in Season 5 of True Blood. As many already know, he was in the Twilight series, but I first got a glimpse of his acting talent when he was in AMC’s “Hell on Wheels” as Sheriff Swede. He scared me then, so I’m hoping we’ll see him be a really scary vampire in our favorite show.

Christopher has a new website coming out soon and he just did a photo shoot with web site creators, Michellesworks. Here’s a couple of photos from the site of what we can expect to see:
