True Blood Deborah Ann Woll Was Born To Play A Vampire

Posted by Lynnpd On August - 9 - 2012

True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll says in the video below that she was a good choice to play a vampire since she was born the color of death. She also was drawn to the good writing and something that pushes the envelope.

So what is it like to portray a vampire on the small screen, and how does one prepare for such a role? Do the “True Blood” vampires really drink blood?

Woll answered those questions and more when she was quizzed by CNN’s “Starting Point” panel. Check out the video above and find out what she had to say!

True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll stopped by Big Morning Buzz Live this morning where she discussed whether or not Jessica will heal Hoyt with her blood and fall in love with him again, now that he’s saved her life and she got all that wild-child stuff out of her system?

Deborah Ann says:

We don’t know what Hoyt’s fate is as of last night, [episode 5.09]” she teased. (Wait, Deborah, we don’t know, but YOU do.) But pressed to speculate about her character’s future with her ex (played by Jim Parrack), she said, “I think it was pretty clear the other night: I think she has a lot of care for him but the love is gone. I really love that the writers allowed that to happen.”

That baby vamp is still so cruel! And yet, she wouldn’t rule out a reunion in the future. “Anything can happen, that is true,” she admitted. “We didn’t think that they’d be able to break up Hoyt and Jess, because it was such an epic story, but they did it. So maybe they’ll be able to bring them back together.”

True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Jessica and writer, Angela Robinson attended a special genre panel at Comic Con last month.  It was called “Girls Gone Genre,” a panel celebrating female creators and empowered characters. The panelists included writers and producers Marti Noxon (Fright Night, Jane Espenson (Once Upon a Time), Karyn Kasuma (Jennifer’s Body), Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead) and Angela Robinson (True Blood) and actress Deborah Ann Woll (True Blood).

Below are excerpts from this article about the panel that relate to True Blood.

How does an actor’s viewpoint in this genre differ from a writer, producer or director?

On her character Jessica from HBO’s True Blood, Woll said, “Even in one episode, she can be incredibly sexy and incredibly dorky. She can be incredibly wise and also naïve. … It’s never one thing. I also feel that in the past the strong heroine has often been a fighter who takes on very masculine aspects. … I like that Jessica’s very compassionate. She becomes stronger the more she opens up to the world and embraces those, what we consider feminine, aspects of herself.”

Genre is a safe space to be transgressive and explore themes,” Robinson added. “It was kind of neat to go from The L Word — the nuances of how women interact … it was kind of nice to bring that into True Blood. You can have crazy-sexy or you can have someone just give someone a look and we’ll examine that. [In the writers’ room]. I see myself as kind of an advocate for the female characters on the show.”

Robinson mentioned how when she arrived at a studio to direct Herbie Unloaded, she was sometimes told automatically that the messenger’s entrance was in the back. “And I’m like, ‘I’m directing the movie!’” she said, laughing with the audience. “People don’t know what to make of me. … Whenever there’s a black person on a studio lot, we eye each other. And we give this little nod, like, ‘You made it here! Good for you!’ You walk into rooms and people have these preset conceptions. … So I kind of start talking quickly and intelligently when I’m there in the gap before they can [speak]. And then they have no box for me and they just kind of take it at face value and then we can actually have a conversation.

I feel very responsible about things, like not being too skinny,” Woll revealed, garnering applause from the audience. “There’s wanting to be a good role model and encourage other women. You have to have the confidence in yourself.

What advice would the panelists give to aspiring screenwriters?

“Whatever you do, you get good through doing it,” Espenson replied. “A lot of disadvantage that women have had in the writers’ room is that they aren’t given enough time in the writers’ room to learn while they are there. It’s the ability to fail and get back up that makes you better. Don’t just get through the door — persevere. Maybe you’ll lose a couple jobs early on, a lot of people do, and stick with it.”

Woll added, “I would say really be yourself and stick with your principles. You don’t want to do that nude scene? Don’t do it. You get a say in your career.”

In the interview below with TVGuide, True Blood’s Deborah Ann Woll talks about the big 180 degree turn that True Blood is taking in the second half of Season 5.  Read part of the interview with Deborah below:

How will Roman’s death change the war?
Deborah Ann Woll: In the previous episodes, when Roman is walking around the table and he knows there’s a traitor in his midst, it sort of looked like everybody thought it was going to be them. So I don’t know how much our Authority members really believe in mainstreaming. Do they believe in it because they actually believe in it? Or do they believe in it because they were afraid of Roman? Or do they believe in it because it’s what is vogue right now? We don’t know where everyone’s loyalties lie. In the aftermath of the death of Roman, we’ll see more clearly who will fall where.

What will we see of war between the mainstreamers and the Sanguinistas?
Woll: The tension so far has been between the Guardian, who is so extremely mainstream that it’s self-hating in a way, and the Sanguinistas, who are so extremely pro-vampire that it’s elitist. We have people on both sides of the extremes and they’re going to have to fight it out at some point. Then people like Jessica, who are really right down the middle, are going to get caught in the middle of all that.

While that war is building, so is the inevitable one between the vampires and the faeries. What can you tell us about how that is ramping up this season?
Woll: Right now the faeries are pretty safe. They have the portal to their club where they can stay away from vampires. We also know, we have Russell now, who appears to be stronger than we thought he was. He looks all weak at the hospital, but he was able to take down the Guardian of the Authority. We know how much he likes faeries and he likes faerie blood, so that’s a strong adversary. He had Sookie’s (Anna Paquin) blood and probably hasn’t forgot about it.

What interaction will Jessica have with Russell, if any?
Woll: A little bit, certainly her maker [Bill] is in the presence of Russell, and we’ll see how long he lets Jessica stay home alone, particularly if there are big changes to come in the power structure. I think she’s scared of [Russell]. He’s made life very hard for her as a vampire. Here’s this guy who was on television and killed a human being in a very violent manner and made the entire world very scared of who Jessica is. They’re going to be on opposite sides.

We haven’t seen a lot of Jessica and her maker Bill (Stephen Moyer) this season. What can you tell us about what’s to come?
Woll: They’ll have to connect at some point. He’s in a very difficult situation with the different political power structures and he has to get his progeny involved to make sure she’s not a liability in any way. He has to get that under control. I do think it’s going to be more dangerous for her.

Considering Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) released Pam (Kristin Bauer), was there any worry in Jessica’s mind that that might happen with Bill?
Woll: Oh, yes, and it doesn’t necessarily just have to be a release thing either. He could just become a different person. Like they said, Bill’s looking for something to believe in, and so far Jessica’s been a good anchor for him. He’s lost Sookie, he’s lost his family, but he has this progeny that surprisingly he’s very proud of and happy to have made. They really only have each other right now, and it would be devastating for either of them to find out that the other one isn’t who they fought for.

Do you think the arrival of Lilith might affect Bill?
Woll: I think the arrival of Lilith is going to change everything. It’s going to change everyone, and that certainly includes Bill, it includes Jessica, it includes Russell, it includes Jason. Yes, I think everybody’s going to change with the arrival of such a strong, powerful icon. It’ll be like the second coming of Christ, in a way. This powerful force is actually going to impact her life in a very real way.
