True Blood’s Denis O’Hare recently sat down for an interview  about his role of Larry in ‘American Horror Story. In the interview he was also asked some questions about his part in True Blood.

Below are the sections of the interview that pertain to True Blood.

AX: Between Larry Harvey and Russell Edgington, you’ve played two regular characters with serious burn makeups in under two years. Are those makeups as miserable to put on and uncomfortable to wear as they look?

O’HARE: The one for True Blood was definitely hard to wear, that was tough to wear. This one is actually not that hard to wear, and [the makeup artists] do such a beautiful job of it that I’m thrilled to be in it. And I love doing it.

AX: Do you have to try to make sure you’re articulating and enunciating through the makeup?

O’HARE: It can be an obstacle, and that’s not fun, but this one actually is not an obstacle. This one actually enhances the acting and it enhances the character. It gives you a kind of strange power.

AX: Speaking of the True Blood makeup, were you happy with the way Russell’s story ended so far, with him buried deep in a pit of concrete?

O’HARE: You know what I’m happy about? I’m happy about such a fantastic season last season, and happy that this season [turned] out to be such a great season, and that they keep talking about Russell. They keep saying, “We’re in a post-Russell Edgington world,” and they keep talking about, “When Russell Edgington pulled his spine out …” See, he’s not dead. If somebody invokes you, you’re not dead. He’s been invoked again and again and again. I love that.

AX: Well, we’ve seen a bit hole in the pit of concrete now, and TRUE BLOOD series creator Alan Ball has said, “Russell isn’t dead.” Can you elaborate on that at all?

O’HARE: I think Alan Ball is a brilliant man, and I think he’s a really smart man, so if Alan Ball says he’s not dead, then I bet he’s not dead.

Posted by Lynnpd On December - 9 - 2011

The fabulous Denis O’Hare, True Blood’s other King, Russell Edgington, is expected to make a return to True Blood in Season 5, but it has just been reported today that he has also signed up to return to The Good Wife.

On The Good Wife he previously played Judge Abernathy in four episodes. He will now return to the show in an episode towards the end of January, TV Guide reports.

The Good Wife’s executive producer Robert King said: “We have missed him a lot. He doesn’t have to wear the burn makeup for this.

Denis has been very active since he was buried in cement on True Blood and has recently been starring as Larry ‘Burn Man’ Harvey in American Horror Story.

True Blood’s Denis O’Hare will appear at Chicago’s Court Theatre’s Midwest in An Iliad, now in previews before an official opening November 19. We reported snpiy Denis and Lisa Peterson’s adaptation the play here. Denis’s first playwriting credit came about when Peterson sought him out in 2005 to read and examine Robert Fagles’ English translation of Homer’s ancient Trojan War epic The Iliad.

O’Hare was originally supposed to star in the world premiere of An Iliad at Seattle Rep, but his casting in True Blood scuttled those plans. Instead, Tony Award-winning actor Stephen Spinella (Angels in America, Spring Awakening) appeared in An Iliad in Seattle and a subsequent run at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, N.J.

Although there was talk between O’Hare and Peterson about him appearing in the Court production of An Iliad, TV work once again prevented him (this time it was American Horror Story). Yet O’Hare made certain that he will appear in An Iliad in February 2012 at the New York Theatre Workshop, where he will alternate performances with Spinella.

As for O’Hare, he’s currently enjoying his increased national exposure as an actor thanks to TV and film work like The Good Wife, Milk and especially in True Blood. In fact, O’Hare was interrupted mid-interview by a True Blood autograph seeker.

I’m old enough in this business that I sort of gave up on the idea that I would be discovered and turned into a movie star—that idea died when I was about 30 or 35, but I was very happy being a working actor,” O’Hare said, adding that he didn’t entirely factor in garnering fame via cable TV. “I have no illusions about what it means and how long it will last, but I am enjoying it.”

O’Hare himself was surprised at all the media coverage he got his past July when he married his longtime partner, interior designer Hugo Redwood, in New York just a few days after it became legal in that state.

I decided to go ahead and tweet something about my marriage and I guess there were a lot of journalists sitting around with nothing to do on the West Coast covering some sort of fall TV series launch and they all picked up on it and it went out like wildfire,” O’Hare said.

Although O’Hare wouldn’t reveal any major True Blood plotlines, he did disclose that Russell Edgington will return even though he was seemingly killed off.

I’m coming back [for True Blood's fifth series] mid-season because of An Iliad. I’m amazed that we were able to negotiate around that,” O’Hare said. “I’m very happy to come back and actually I got the first two scripts for True Blood and I’ve been hungrily reading them.

Although Newell hopes that audiences will come see O’Hare and Peterson’ An Iliad because it’s a critically acclaimed theatrical adaptation of a monumental epic of western civilization, he’s very open to welcoming in die-hard True Blood fans.

We work in a very complicated marketplace,” Newell said. “If Denis O’Hare’s acting in other aspects of the entertainment world draws some attention to people coming out to see An Iliad, then fantastic.

An Iliad continues through Dec. 11 at the Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis. visit http:// www.CourtTheatre.org for more details.

Adina Porter Joins Denis O’Hare in American Horror Story

Posted by Lynnpd On October - 20 - 2011

Below is a photo of Denis O’Hare from his role of Larry in American Horror Story.  But Denis is not the only True Blood star to be on the show.

Adina Porter, Tara’s mom from True Blood is also going to be on the show. She will play the part of Sally, a woman whose husband is divorcing her for being boring, and, accordingly, Ben Harmon, played by Dylan McDermott goes into a trance listening to her talk about football. He wakes up with blood all over his hands. Sexy Young Moira is sexily cleaning up some blood, maybe from somebody he killed. His tape recorder is missing, so we’ll probably find out whom he offed later in the episode.

I can just imagine Adina Porter in the role and Denis looks really scary in that photo.

Denis O’Hare Loves A Good Villian

Posted by Lynnpd On October - 20 - 2011

All the True Blood fans are anxiously awaiting the return of the evil, but fabulous Russell Edgington. He was played brilliantly by Denis O’Hare in Season 3 until he met his end by being buried by Bill and Eric in concrete, or did he? All during Season 4 he remained buried, but at the end of the season the place where he was buried was found empty.

Rumors have been flying that he will now return to us in Season 5 from both Denis himself as well as the series creator, Alan Ball. Below is an interview with Denis from the Boston Herald where he talks about his return as well as his latest portrayal of Larry, a tortured soul, in American Horror Story.

Denis O’Hare knows scary.

Not because he plays the unhinged Russell Edgington, the vampire king of Mississippi on HBO’s “True Blood,” or the creepy, scarred Larry Harvey on FX’s “American Horror Story” (Wednesdays at 10 p.m.).

It’s just that the 49-year-old actor has an affinity for things macabre.

I was steeped in the monster genre from the time I was 10 years old,” O’Hare told the Herald. “I was contemplating Vincent Price, actually, and if I ever had a childhood hero, it was Vincent Price. I was thinking about those old Saturday afternoon horror films I watched as a kid, and they really stayed with me. I was a monster freak growing up.”

That education has come in handy lately. O’Hare shined as the bloodthirsty, unforgettable Edgington in the third season of “True Blood,” and now as the disfigured Larry Harvey in “American Horror Story,” a dark series that may be difficult to define.

I always say it’s ‘The Shining’ meets ‘Twin Peaks’ meets ‘The Amityville Horror,’ ” O’Hare said. “It’s got so many strange elements, and it’s not simply a horror show. It’s got so many other things going on. It’s a lot more psychological, but the style is so odd and forward-thinking.”

O’Hare plays the mysterious former owner of what looks to be a cursed house. He stalked the home’s new owner, played by Dylan McDermott, and revealed himself to be a disfigured, tortured man.

The thing about Larry that’s so great is that he is foremost a human being who is in a great deal of personal and physical pain,” O’Hare said. “He’s acting out of a strange compulsion to be set free. He’s looking for redemption — a way out.”

While Larry shows a kind side by offering warnings about the malevolent house, there’s still a darkness about him, revealed in small looks.

Still, he’s no vengeful vampire.

“Russell is much more scary than Larry,” O’Hare said of his two recent TV alter egos. “Russell is a passionate character whose only motivation is to stay alive. He is so filled with forward motion and momentum about what he wants to do that he’s burning up with a desire to act. Of course, Russell is amoral in the great pagan sense — he doesn’t have the burden of our Judeo-Christian morals. He’s hard to parse because he’s playing by a different rule book.”

Have Truebies seen the last of the spine-punching vampire king?

“Anticipation is a great thing and I’d hate to kill it,” O’Hare said. “If you watched the finale, you know he’s no longer buried, but I have no idea what the writers will do. I have my ideas, but it might not be a straight linear line from the end of the last season.”

Until then, he’s content to sit for three and a half hours in a makeup chair being transformed into a burn victim and creeping out “American Horror Story” audiences.

I love a good villain,” he said. “There is nothing clear-cut and simple about a villain. Ever.

Denis O’Hare Talks American Horror Story, True Blood and more

Posted by Lynnpd On October - 12 - 2011

It’s a long wait until True Blood Season 5 airs in June and shooting for the new season doesn’t even start until the end of November or early December, but it’s good to see Denis O’Hare has been active in another supernatural story, “American Horror Story”.

Below are excerpts from a recent phone interview with Collider, where Denis O’Hare talked about the mysterious burned man that he plays on American Horror Story, how he sees Larry Harvey as both sympathetic and scary, the more than three hours of detailed make-up work he goes through to bring the character to life, and how he sees this as a show about our deepest fears.

Additionally, Denis also talked about how excited he is now that the door has been opened for Russell Edgington to return to True Blood in Season 5, his love for his character on The Good Wife, the experience of doing a role in Clint Eastwood upcoming drama J. Edgar, and that he’s preparing for a one-man show.

Question: How did you get involved with American Horror Story? Were you looking to do another TV show, or were you approached about doing this role?
DENIS O’HARE: You know, I wasn’t looking to do another show like this. I have an ambivalence about TV because I don’t ever want to get stuck in any sort of rut, or in any series, so I hadn’t necessarily been looking for a big gig. I had just come off of J. Edgar, with Clint Eastwood, and was staring into the abyss of an empty summer. And then, I got a phone call from my agent saying that Ryan Murphy wanted to speak with me. I had never met the man, but had, of course, heard of him. I was an admirer, but didn’t quite know what to expect.

So, he called up and was very direct, and very interesting and wonderful, and he basically said, “I’m creating a new series, and I would love for you to read the script.” I was like, “All right,” so he sent me the script and I read it, over the weekend. On Monday, he called back and said, “What do you think?,” and I told him that I thought it was really unusual and interesting, and I was intrigued by the part that he asked me to look at. He explained a little bit about what Larry would be and do, and then he said, “Would you do it?” I said, “Yes,” and he said, “Okay,” and we got the deal made really quickly, in three or four days. It was crazy.

How would you describe this series to people?
O’HARE: It is difficult. I’ve said it’s like The Shining meets Twin Peaks meets The Amityville Horror meets Lars Von Trier’s The Kingdom. It’s got elements of all of that. It’s got the weirdness of the population of Twin Peaks, it’s got the crazy momentum of The Shining, and it’s got the haunted house, slow motion reveal of The Amityville Horror. But, ultimately, it’s its own thing and it lives in the mind of Ryan Murphy. In a year or so, I think you’ll hear people starting to say, “Yeah, it’s like American Horror Story,” and use this as a reference because it’s so unique.

Who do you think the audience is, for this show?
O’HARE: That’s a good question. I don’t know the answer to that. I think there’s a really big overlap between sci-fi and horror, and then there’s also a big overlap between the normal TV viewer and horror. Horror, unlike sci-fi, doesn’t feel like such a niche genre. When you’ve got unbelievable actors like Connie Britton, Jessica Lange, Dylan McDermott and Frances Conroy, you’re going to be drawing in a different dynamic. Jessica Lange, alone, raises the bar so high that it peaks people’s interest. Connie Britton, coming off the success of Friday Night Lights, certainly brings an audience with her. We may even get some vampire fans watching the show. It’s FX, so they already have their own built-in demographic. People are watching Sons of Anarchy, and other shows. I’m curious to see what actually happens.

As much as you must have been asked, over the last season, whether or not Russell Edgington would return on True Blood, was exciting to finally have that door opened for this coming season?
O’HARE: Hell, yes! I had been hearing rumors and things, but until I actually heard that there was a script, in which they went to the parking lot and found a hole in the ground and chains, I wasn’t sure. I’ve been in contact with people from True Blood, and I’m friends with a lot of them, and Joe Manganiello, who plays Alcide, actually told me first. He was like, “Dude, there’s this scene where I go to the parking lot and you’re not there anymore,” and I went, “Yes!” I’m really thrilled. I love that family. Alan Ball is such a spectacular person to be around and to work for. I’m really excited to get to go back and join them, and I love the character. I can’t wait to pick up where he left off.

Have you thought about how he could be now, with the time that’s passed?
O’HARE: He could change. His experience has, maybe, redefined him and shaped him differently.

Are you surprised with how much everyone truly loved the character?
O’HARE: I was. I didn’t expect it, and I was a little shocked, but ultimately, I’m really pleased. It’s a very nice thing to have happen. I was really thrilled.
