Giles Matthey On New Character “Claude”

Posted by Shadaliza On July - 3 - 2012

One of the many new character  in season 5 when during episode 5.03 of True Blood Claude, played by Giles Matthey entered the shop where Jessica was trying on dresses. When he sees Jessica is vampire he quickly runs away and Jessica follows in pursuit, only to lose him. In the excerpts from an interview with Giles below, he talks about his role and the arc of Season 5 in general. He also touch on the departure of longtime show runner Alan Ball.

Tell us a little bit about your character.
My character’s name is Claude. And he’s a fairy. He’s very loosely related to Sookie. In the book he’s described as a ripped, musclebound strip club owner. They’ve gone a different way with me obviously, small skinny little rat that I am. But he’s a mentor figure, he helps Sookie to understand some things.

Do you think next year will mark a different era of “True Blood”?
This season certainly builds up to a climax. It’s spectacular. The fans will not be disappointed in the arc. I’ve watched a lot of “True Blood” and I think this season has started sharper and more focussed than the last, and that helps with the arc. It’s a whole journey with these characters.

What’s the biggest challenge of playing this character?
In the books Claude is described as bisexual and preferring men over women. But he puts his fingers in both pies if you will. And I’ve been raised by women my whole life, so I have that effeminate feel. I’m not the macho type, I’m very in touch with my emotions. That side of him is something that’s natural to be. I can empathize with what’s happening in the scene, and that’s the way you can create something great.

Giles Matthey Talks About his True Blood Character – Claude

Posted by Shadaliza On June - 28 - 2012

On last Sunday night’s episode we saw a new character: a fairy named Claude. Giles Matthey has stepped into what will surely be his breakout role. I must admit that when I first saw Giles, I thought he wasn’t right for the part, but after seeing some videos of him, I now think that he will make a welcome addition and look forward to what the writer’s have in store for his character this season.

Fearnet spoke to Giles about landing the role and the level of awesomeness on the True Blood set and  that interview is below:

FEARNET: Tell us a little bit about Claude.
Claude is a fairy. He was featured in last season and helped Sookie escape from Queen Mab in fairyland. He was actually portrayed by another actor last season. I was fortunate enough to be recast in the role. We’ve had a very, very small glimpse of Claude. This season goes into fairies a bit, it goes into what they are like. Claude acts as a mentor-type figure to Sookie. Helps her understand things about herself, and what it means to be a fairy. I would like to think that he is protective over her – as any mentor should be.

FEARNET: So will we get more background on the fairies this year? It was sprinkled throughout last season, but there was never really a sense of backstory.
You will see a focus. Obviously I can’t give too much away, but there is a focus on fairies, more so than any other season. How that plays out, and what that means for the characters… you’ll just have to wait and see.

FEARNET: Did you watch True Blood before you were cast?

The only exposure I had to True Blood was seeing two rather handsome men circling like dogs around a pretty blonde lady. I thought, “They look ridiculously handsome. I’m changing the channel now.” When I originally read for the role, I did a taping at my agency, and had no idea what True Blood was. It’s not very big in England, and even though I had been in New York for two years, at the time I didn’t watch much TV – I was all about school and focus and all those boring things. A couple weeks [after I read for the role] I was in Los Angeles and I was told to go in [to read] for Alan Ball. I didn’t have much idea who he was, which I think helped me in the audition. I was so lucky and fortunate that I was cast in the role, and from then on, I watched it a lot. I actually became a fan, which is kind of weird because you get cast in something, then you watch it, then you are in it, but you become a fan in between, then you get nervous. It’s like, “Oh my gosh, you’re Sookie! You’re Alcide!” It was very bizarre.

I became a fan after I got the role. It was really the writing and the acting. The thing about True Blood for me is that it would be very easy to just tap into the current culture of vampires and fantasy, and it is very easy to do it wrong. The actors on True Blood are just brilliant.

FEARNET: I know Claude was in barely minutes of the last season-
Minutes? Barely seconds!

FEARNET: Did his appearance, created from another actor, inform your performance at all?
I think it would be a bad idea to copy someone else’s portrayal. It’s a very strange position to be in. I don’t think it is a good idea to copy other people’s interpretations because then it is not your own, and it won’t be your own truth. So I really tried to make it my own. Also, Audrey and Laura, who help with costumes, are so good, and Alan gives the final OK on costumes, and that is a huge help. The way they decide to dress you can really answer a lot of questions about your character. I think that is a hint for the fairies. Let’s just say that they are very sexual creatures.

FEARNET: In last week’s episode, Jessica has a very strong reaction to you when you enter the shop. Will you have more interactions with Jessica?
I wish I could answer that question, but it might give too much away, and I don’t want to get fired. I’ve really had a good time on True Blood and would like to stick around!

FEARNET: Can you tell us how many episodes you are going to be in?
I’m in eight episodes. It’s a dream come true – really, it is. I have worked on a couple projects, and I don’t think I’ve come across a group of people who I have felt this supported and connected to. As an actor, you want to feel safe – once you are at ease with yourself, you can do good work. Ryan [Kwanten, who plays Jason] and Anna [Paquin, who plays Sookie] have been so supportive – and they don’t have to be! They are stars – they have their own lives and their own work. As a professional you are expected to turn up, do your stuff well, and that’s it. It’s not like that on True Blood. I really feel like you are only as strong as your weakest link, so they all really help everyone. Everyone is so The cast is so huge and it grows exponentially every season. Was there anyone that you wanted to work with that you didn’t get a chance to?

That would give away a little bit, so I will just say a generic: “Yes, of course.” Maybe we’ll do something impromptu – some street theater or something!

FEARNET: This is really your first big role. What was your reaction when you booked it?
I cried. It wasn’t like I was jumping for joy – I actually burst into tears. I was at the airport and I burst into tears and collapsed on my luggage. I wasn’t sad about getting the role – I was sad that there weren’t people there to experience it with me. Then set in the huge excitement and joy. It was weird – I did not expect myself to act like that. I thought it would all be joy, and it really was – about the show – but I don’t know why, my mind just went there. I just wanted to share this amazing moment – because it really was a life-changing thing. I am so honored to be part of this great show.

Giles Matthey Compares True Blood to Twilight

Posted by Lynnpd On June - 24 - 2012

True Blood’s newest Fairy, Giles Matthey who will play Claude this season answers some questions about True Blood and the Twilight series.  Is there any comparison?

Could vampires like Eric and Bill of crazy Bon Temps mingle with the Cullen clan in gloomy Forks?

Well, if you ask True Blood star Giles Matthey, the answer is–wait for it Twi-hards–no! “They’re two separate worlds,” he revealed while hanging out at the Cambio studios.

So do we have a True Blood/Twilight feud on our hands? “True Blood is so sophisticated. It’s an adult version of this fantasy genre that includes vampires,” he explains. “You get these primal urges, sex, violence, death, love, betrayal.”

Plus Giles plays a creature on True Blood that we’ve never seen in the Twilight world–a sexy fairy! A few weeks ago, he filled us in on what it’s like playing Claude and becoming a part of the True Blood world.

So, just how does Giles sum up Twilight? In his opinion, he thinks it just looks like Edward and Jacob telling Bella they love her. Hmmm . . . what do you Twilight fans say to that? Has Giles started a True Blood versus Twilight war? Or do you agree with him?

True Blood’s newest fairy, Giles Matthey, who will play Claude in Season 5 recently stopped by the Cambio studios to talk about the new season.

Oh and consider yourself warned TB fans…Giles reveals some secrets in the vid!

According to Giles, his character in the book isn’t like him at all.

“In the books Claude is described as some hunky, body builder, male stripper. It doesn’t take a genius to realize I’m not quite that type of guy.”

He also explains that fairies are very sexual by nature…who knew!

We talked about the amazing True Blood cast and how impossibly good looking they all are. He said he can understand why people get “hot” over the show.

Make sure to check out Giles Matthey and the rest of the TB team when season 5 of True Blood premieres on HBO this Sunday at 9PM EST!

Giles Matthey did a photo shoot with JustJared.com recently and the 25-year-old actor, also talked about his True Blood debut in the part of Claude. He said:

I am so lucky and so honored to be working on such a great show. I can completely understand why it has such a massive following as for me it has such great quality in all areas. I watch the show and was struck firstly by the great acting and how alive they all are. The writing is also a major contributing factor to this as well and I really cant wait to see what happens.

Why Does Sookie Have a New Cousin Claude?

Posted by Lynnpd On February - 3 - 2012

Giles Matthey

Last week, we learned that there would be a new Claude in Season 5 of True Blood. The fans were at first, confused by this because in Season 4, we saw Claude in the first episode played by Neil Hopkins. So, it was surprising when a new casting call appeared and actor Giles Matthey was chosen to assume the fairy wings previously worn by Hopkins.

It’s now considered that the reason the part was recast is due to fan criticism of the choice of Neil Hopkins, thought too old for the part. I don’t remember that criticism, and Alan Ball hasn’t let the fans influence him too much, instead preferring to use his own “exceptional” judgment, (of which we approve) but for whatever reason, we now have a new Claude.

Claude is a character in the books and the twin brother of Sookie’s elegant fairy cousin, Claudine, who appeared at the end of the show’s third season. In the book series, Claude is an arrogant little queen whose only redeeming quality is his protective nature toward Claudine.

While the part of Claude will not be a series regular, the role will be considerably expanded into a multi-episode arc and could develop into something even larger. In the books, Claude and Sookie eventually grow to be close friends.

Relative newcomer Giles Matthey is set to recur on True Blood’s upcoming season in the role of Claude, a very attractive and mysterious young man, HBO confirms to us. And yes ladies, the British actor will be putting that accent to good use when he shows up in Bon Temps. Seems like even vampires can’t resist a sexy accent!

Described as “omni-sexual,” Claude catches the attention and curiosity of Jessica and will first appear in episode three of the new season.  Fans of The Good Wife may recognize Matthey from his turn as Dick Anders in a recent episode.

Here’s the casting call that was released earlier for the part of Claude:

[CLAUDE] Early 20s. Very attractive, omni-sexual guy (with and without a shirt). A mysterious young man who speaks with a British accent and catches Jessica’s attention and curiosity. Recurring. Must have a British Accent. (41) Possible series regular season 6.
