Sam Trammell talks about Season 2 and his character
This interview with Sam Trammell is about the premiere of Season 2 in Europe, but he does reveal some new and interesting things about his character. Speaking from Paris, where the actor has been blown away by the positive reactions from European fans he reveals some information, and when asked specifically about the season, he says, “It’s a wacky, crazy season. There’s a lot of danger present in Bon Temps and Sam kind of understands what’s going on and the gravity of the situation more than anyone else.”
He’s also happy to report that his character, who spent much of the first series gazing longingly at Sookie while polishing glasses behind the bar, is in for a romance of his own,
“There’s a little bit of a love story for him and it’s requited this time – which we all love to have. So it’s nice to see Sam open up a bit, we see another side of him. But he still has a lot of weight on his shoulders, a lot of responsibility for the town and he feels very protective.”
Although seemingly just a love-struck landlord, True Blood’s Sam has a supernatural secret of his own: He sporadically turns into a dog.
Sam says: “I really like that he is damaged person, I came from a very normal American family which is great, I don’t want to put it down, but Sam’s parents abandoned him when he was 14 because he turned into a dog and that is a real scar on him.
“It’s interesting to play someone like that, who has had to fend for themselves on streets and who didn’t have parents and who knows how he found the money to buy the bar?
That to me is the most interesting thing about Sam. More than the fact that he’s a shapeshifter, just the fact that he had a difficult childhood.”
Despite its far-fetched premise, Sam thinks there is enough in True Blood to which people can relate.
He offers: “I guess in a way our show has a lot of universal themes that different cultures can latch on to, like the archetypal themes of good and evil. These are very simple themes that are cross-cultural as opposed to say, an American doctors show or something like that. There’s a real fascination with vampires and fantasy in general, it is an interesting time.”
Sam Trammell Offers ‘True Blood’ Secrets for Season 3

Sam Trammell talks to Digital Spy about his character’s relationship with Sookie and also offers some hints to rabiddol.com on what audiences can expect when the hit HBO vampire series returns for Season 3 in June.
Throughout season one, Trammell’s character Sam Merlotte carried a torch for Sookie, despite her choosing to be with vampire Bill. Speaking to SFX, Trammell theorised: “I think Sam and Sookie will always have a connection. I think that’s an anchor for him and for the show that he will come back to again and again, season after season.” The 38-year-old actor previously told Digital Spy that he hopes the writers place Sam in more danger as the series progresses.
Playing shape-shifter Sam Merlotte, Trammell teases that his character becomes adamant about locating his biological family in Season 3. His search is successful, but he soon learns they are “pretty bad news.”
“It’s going to lead to some pretty dramatic and interesting stuff for him this year,” Trammell said.
In addition, Merlotte’s shape-shifter secret will take a blow.
“A lot of people know he’s a shape-shifter now, like Andy, Jason and Sookie,” he explained. “He’s slowly getting revealed and the more he gets revealed, the chains that have been binding him — as far as trying to keep who he is secret goes — are slowly breaking.”
Another Season 3 highlight is the arrival of werewolves. Will they wreak havoc on Bon Temp?
“I’m not sure — I did read the books but I’m not exactly sure how the werewolves are going to be put into the show,” he said. “I do know the werewolves are disgusting creatures. They’re dirty, they’re not shape-shifters — they’re disgusting, low-level, smelly creatures. Perfect for Sam!”
