True Blood season six: What’s in store for Bill Compton?

Posted by AphroditeMF On August - 31 - 2012

Season five of True Blood has concluded with its most jaw-dropping cliffhanger ever.  While many fans were greatly distressed by Bill Compton’s explosive death and resurrection in the finale, I was enthralled by this turn of events.  Bill is going to be smack-bang at the centre of next season’s storyline, and is the subject of intense speculation and attention right now.  Also, this will be an excellent plot to showcase Stephen Moyer’s versatility as an actor, and represents a huge game-changer for the show.

Here are my thoughts on Bill Compton version 2.0…

Bill Compton True Blood

Nature

Bill is not simply Lilith in Bill’s skin – he is still himself, with his own memories and experiences.  This has been confirmed already by Alan Ball.  So this is not, as some fans have been saying, a rip-off of the Locke/Man in Black storyline from Lost (massive Lost spoiler: Locke died, and the evil spirit of The Man in Black took on his form).  The fact that Sookie and Eric both saw him implies that he is a physical being, not a spirit entity as Lilith was.  I doubt that Lilith is going to be inhabiting his body and occasionally taking controlling him, since they’ve done the spirit possession thing to death with Lafayette.  It’s possible that Bill will continue to have visions of Lilith, but my feeling is that we’ve seen the last of her and her epic ladygarden.  Lilith’s quest was to find a host, and now that she has accomplished that, her powers have become manifested in Bill.  My feeling is that Bill will still have free-will, and will have control over his own actions, for better or for worse.

Since he has been “reborn”, then it is plausible that he will suffer from the same uncontrollable urges as a newly made vampire does, and will be wild and impulsive.  Throughout season five, he became increasingly psychotic, as a result of ingesting Lilith’s blood and being brainwashed by the Sanguinista cult, to the extent that he lost all the love and empathy that he’d once had, even towards Jessica and Sookie.  Now that he is reborn, whether or not he remains a completely cold-blooded psychopath remains to be seen.

A lot of fans have been asking if Bill will be naked, covered in blood, and emitting a horrendous primal scream noise all season.  Somehow, as much as I would like to see an entire season of Naked Bill, I doubt that he’s going to remain in the state we saw him in immediately following his resurrection.  To have him being an entirely feral would be a waste of Stephen Moyer’s acting skills, so I think that he will be lucid, just more vicious than he once was.

Bill Compton True BloodPowers

Obviously he has become supercharged in some way – so will he have some previously unseen superpowers?  What will he be capable of?  Superior strength and speed to all vampires is a given, as is extremely potent blood, and very possibly the ability to enthrall vampires who drink his blood.  Probably he’ll acquire the ability to fly, and maybe some advanced glamouring technique.  Maybe he will be able to glamour a mass audience via television?  Or glamour other vampires and supernatural beings?  The writers’ imaginations pose the only limit to what Bill might now be capable of.  Perhaps he’s immune to staking, and can daywalk?  He might even have some crazy sci-fi abilities such as pyrokinesis, telekinesis, teleportation, shape-shifting, telepathic projection, time travel, prescience, resurrection of the dead… you name it!

A feeling I have is that Bill will see Lorena, in the same way that Eric and Nora saw Godric.  And if Bill sees Lorena egging him on to be evil, maybe it will make him think twice.

Motivations

Now that Bill is some sort of vampire demigod, what sort of shenanigans is he going to get up to?  The Sanguinistas were keen to bolster their numbers by turning new vampires, so perhaps Bill will get some new progenies?  Will he set out to gain new followers, presenting himself as the new vampire messiah, or embark on a lone mission of anarchy?  Maybe Steve Newlin and Nigel the baby eater could be his first disciples?  Bill was an adept politician, so perhaps he will continue to try to manipulate the media, while covertly carrying out his dastardly deeds.

On the other hand, since he had a brief realization in between downing the blood, and meeting the true death, perhaps the reborn Bill will question his new role and will resist the prophecy within the Vampire Bible.

What I’m really wondering is whether Bill could be the Antichrist.  It’s been mentioned in the show that “end days” are coming, and Salome spoke of Lilith’s return heralding The Rapture.  What if events are spiralling towards a cataclysmic event, and Bill is the harbinger of evil?  If that is the case, then another being would have to be the second coming of Christ.  Sookie, perhaps?  Or is this all a bit too much like Lost/Carnivale/The Stand?!

Bill Compton True BloodThe Long Game

My feeling is that, while Bill will initially appear to be inherently evil, slowly he will come to his senses.  He’s fought long and hard for his humanity in the past, after all.  I know that many fans feel that Bill’s role next season is to eventually defeat Warlow, and I am in agreement.  They’ve already done the “Bill and Eric outwit an ancient vampire” thing with Russell, but now Bill has been empowered it will be interesting to see a face-off between two ultra-powerful undead beings.

I think that the fairies will have an important role to play in Bill’s eventual fate.  There is way more to the vampire/fairy mythology than we have seen so far in the show.  My feeling is that their origins are somehow entwined.  It was significant that Salome was so appalled by fairies, and said that Lilith regards them as an abomination.  And let’s not forget – Bill now has four half-fairy great-great-great-great-great granddaughters.  Bill has to eventually be revealed as Andy and Terry’s ancestor, and I think the existence of his living human bloodline will come into play.

I feel that the end-game in True Blood is for Bill to turn human
.  One reason for this is that Russell implied in season three that the fairies have the ability to resurrect dead vampires.  So maybe season six could end with Bill being killed again (perhaps by suicide), and then being resurrected again by Sookie, but this time as a human.  Wouldn’t that be the ultimate irony?  The only way he can have a future with Sookie is to become human, but by becoming human he ruins his chances with her, because then she’d be able to read his mind.  And how terrible would it be for him to be gifted these infinite god-powers only to have them removed, and to have to learn to live as an ordinary mortal?  However, it’s been revealed that Sookie’s powers are finite – she and Bill could end up living as an ordinary human couple after all.  I still think that their conversation in season three, where they dreamed of a life together where neither was a supernatural being, was somehow prophetic.

Whatever direction the writers choose to take Bill’s character, it’s sure to be a mind-bending journey that his character will embark on!

Anne Rice is a Big Fan of True Blood and Thinks Bill is Cool

Posted by Lynnpd On February - 16 - 2012

Author Anne Rice appears, in the video below from CBC Canada’s George Stroumboulopoulos Show, where she dishes on the difference between her vampires and the ‘Twilight’ vampires, confesses to being a fan of ‘True Blood’, and entertains George’s hypothesis about why she decided to write about werewolves in her latest book, ‘The Wolf Gift’.

So what does Anne Rice, author of The Vampire Chronicles Series, think of the Twilight and the Sookie Stackhouse novels and, of course the True Blood series?

We’re glad to say again that Anne Rice is big True Blood fan and a Bill fan. When asked who she favors, Edward from Twilight or Bill from True Blood, she at first says, what about Lestat?, but quickly then answers “Bill.

Here’s a transciption of the video…

Team Edward or Bill from ‘True Blood’
GS: Let’s say that you have to spend eternity standing beside one vampire, and your choice is Team Edward or Bill from ‘True Blood’, which one would you choose?
AR: Where’s Lestat?!?… I’d choose Bill. I think he’s cool.

Twilight Mania
GS: What do you think about the mania around Twilight?
AR: I think it was a stroke of genius for ‘The Vampire Diaries’ and Stephenie Meyers to put vampires in high school. I never thought of that – my vampires would NOT go to high school… I’d have to torture them to go to high school! What I did with them was totally different. I wanted very glamorous, mythological vampires – and they did the opposite. They domesticated them, they put them in high school, and Charlaine Harris put them in Louisiana in Sam’s “Merlotte’s” corner bar, it was great… I’m a fan of Charlaine Harris, I love ‘True Blood’…

Why She Writes About the Supernatural
GS: What is it about the supernatural that you love so much?
AR: I don’t know, I don’t think authors really choose things – it chooses us, you find out. I’m sure it’s the same with Tom Clancy, he write what he writes because that’s where the intensity is, that’s where the fun is, that’s where he feels alive. It’s the same with me and the supernatural: when I’m writing about a vampire, a witch, a werewolf, a ghost, mummy, whatever… I feel completely alive.

George’s Theory on Why Rice Decided to Write About Werewolves
GS: I figured after Twilight took your whole vampire thing, you thought “Lemme show you how to do werewolves!” (Laughter, Anne nods her head)… I imagine that had to be in the subconscious somewhere?
AR: (Lots of laughter) “Maybe so, maybe so!”

Bill and Sookie On Top 10 Greatest Horrific Couples List

Posted by Lynnpd On February - 14 - 2012

Over at Dreadcentral.com, they have compiled a list of the Top 10 Greatest Horrific Couples and True Blood’s Bill and Sookie are on the list.

There list of couples are those that were somehow uniquely intertwined within a film.

“True Blood” (2008)
Bill Compton and Sookie Stackhouse

The way they see it, “True Blood” is nothing more than Twilight for grown-ups. Personally, I think it’s so much more than that, but I won’t argue the point here.

As readers of Charlaine Harris’ The Sookie Stackhouse Novels know, things don’t always work out for the best for Sookie and Bill, but viewers of “True Blood,” especially the early seasons, can’t argue the red-hot chemistry this pair has on screen. It seems when Bill is around, the once awkward Sookie has immense trouble simply keeping her clothes on. Delivering one steamy scene after another, this on-screen couple (Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer) got wise and decided to tie the knot for real in a ceremony in 2010. If their home life is anything like we see in “True Blood,” I’m guess not a lot gets done around that house aside from a whole lot of “testing the springs in the coffin,” if you know what I mean (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

Below is a trailer from Season 1, when it was all “magical.”  Remember?

June 26 is only a month away and that’s the day when we will all end the wait to see True Blood Season 4 begin. HBO has released some screen test videos for the cast members and below are those for Stephen Moyer (Bill), Sam Trammell (Sam), Ryan Kwanten (Jason), Rutina Wesley, (Tara), and Nelsan Ellis (Lafayette).

True Blood has lost its romantic hero

Posted by Shadaliza On September - 14 - 2010

Southern gentleman vampire Bill Compton was presented to us as the romantic hero who returns to his hometown after the Great Revelation that vampires walk amongst us. His desire to mainstream brings him to the local bar where he meets Sookie; she saves him, he saves her and they fall head over heels in love.

Do they live happily after ever? Not exactly, on several occasions during the various seasons we were given hints that Bill was hiding something and that he was not telling the whole truth. The fact that Bill really does love Sookie and is willing to risk everything, even his own life, to keep her safe from harm, has made it so easy to disregard the uneasy feeling that something, somewhere just isn’t right. On top of that Bill comes wrapped in the “Stevolicious” package of Mr. Moyer and that makes it almost impossible not to forgive and forget whatever mistakes he might have made.

From Sookie’s point of view it is completely understandable that she has lost her trust in Bill. There have been several things that he “forgot” to mention to her: Uncle Bartlett, Jessica, her special blood, his mission for the queen and the Rattrays beating her up while he was watching. His motives for charming her in the beginning were far from honorable and even though Sookie knows that Bill loves her now more than anything in this world, it can’t take away her hurt, anger and doubt that all the special loving moments they shared together were based on a lie.

True Blood has lost its romantic hero. Did Bill fall from his pedestal? For some fans he probably did, especially Eric fans who have been waiting (im)patiently for the Bill and Sookie breakup, so Eric could make his move.

Do I think that Bill felt from his pedestal? No. I watch True Blood for entertainment, it is not real life and I am not shopping for a husband among the various Bon Temps residents. The more layers are added to the characters the better. I loved the gentleman vampire who swept the virgin girl off her feet in season 1. Love-sick season 2 Bill was a bit too domesticated for my taste, but he creates a fascinating contrast with bad ass season 3 Bill and underlines the complexity of the character: Bill is all that and then some. How boring would it be if Bill was 100% good? He is vampire, let us never forget that.

We can speculate about what season 4 will bring for Bill. Honestly I don’t have a clue, since Charlaine Harris pretty much abandoned Bill after book 3. But  I am sure Alan Ball and his team of writers will come up with a good storyline for Bill, with or without Sookie. Preferably without her. We have seen them struggle for 3 seasons and althougth I love the impossible romance and Anna and Stephen have an amazing chemistry together, overall both Sookie and Bill have had their best scenes when they were separated from each other…. apart from the steamy sex scenes of course…. yes, I will miss those.

It is not likely that Eric will immediately fill the empty space next to Sookie in the upcoming season. Sookie is fed up with everything vampire and although she realizes that Eric does have feelings, he did show some nasty behavior in the past couple of weeks. Yes, let’s not forget that no more than 8 weeks have passed since we first visited Bon Temps. Sookie’s world has been turned upside down and back again in a very short period of time and I think it would be good for her to spend some time on her own, without a man, vampire, werewolf or shifter by her side. She needs to be her own woman. But, what will she do after that? Maybe Bill, and if not him, then Alcide gets my vote, but I bet he has a few skeletons of his own in some dark closet….. nobody in Bon Temps is ever what they appear to be.

Anne Rice says Bill has the capacity to truly love

Posted by Lynnpd On August - 14 - 2010

Anne Rice, the author of the “Interview With A Vampire” series, wrote on her Facebook fan page about the character of Bill after last week’s episode.

Please note that this is Ms. Rice’s opinion and the beauty of True Blood is that it provides so many layers with many characters that we can relate to or not. There truly is something for everybody and that is what makes the show so fascinating and successful. The passionate discussions we all have show how invested the fans are in the series and in their favorite characters.

Anne Rice writes: “I think I like Bill because he has the moral complexity I want a vampire to have. Eric is too remote and too predictable. Godric was wonderful, and there was the promise of great mystery. Jessica is fascinating; but Bill is the only one who seems to retain a conscience, a deep disgust for what he is, and a capacity to truly love. We have yet to meet a philosophical vampire, am I right?” – August 9 at 11:19pm

10 Vampires more dateable than Edward Cullen

Posted by Shadaliza On July - 2 - 2010

Personally I don’t understand why anyone would want to date Edward Cullen, he is annoying, doesn’t have fangs, sparkles(!) and is sexless. Doesn’t sound like a dream date to me….

The Gloss made a list of 10 vampires who make better candidates then Edward and surprise surprise (not really) 3 True Blood vampires proudly claim their spot. The Gloss added a little explanation of why they chose each vamp.

Bill Compton from True Blood

Why you should date him: Because he has a heart of gold! Except for the super creepy rape-y scene with his maker. But a heart of gold as far as human women go. Besides, if he can roll Sookie’s name that way, imagine what he could do with yours.

Pam from True Blood

Why you should date her: Because she understands the value of a good pair of high heels without seeming like she’s memorized every episode of Sex and the City. And if you kill someone she can help you “go to the hypothetical hardware store and buy a theoretical chainsaw.”

Eric Northman from True Blood

Why you should date him: He’s the sheriff of Louisiana. He can fly. Also, are you perhaps visually impaired? Because I don’t even understand why I should have to justify this one.

This season seems to be a real transition for Bill Compton.  He will be put to many tests and his character will struggle with his identity as a vampire trying to maintain his humanity.  I for one am thrilled that Season 3 is almost here so we can finally find out who took Bill and how he the kidnapping has effected him.  Below is an interview from the New York Post where Stephen discusses the changes we’ll see in Bill during Season 3.

Bill stood front and center in “True Blood’s” big season ending cliffhanger as he was kidnapped immediately after proposing to a pause-prone Sookie. And even though we learn the identity of his vamp-napper in the first episode, their true intentions will remain shrouded in mystery for much of the third season.

But one thing we know for sure is that Bill is going on a character altering journey this year, that will see him struggling to find his way out of the darkness. An off choice given his aversion to sunlight, but I think you get the metaphor.

I had the pleasure of chatting with the very un-Bill-like Stephen (for starters, he smiles) about big season three changes, the lengths Bill will go to for Sookie and how that could actually be detrimental to his beloved.

PopWrap: How exciting was it for your show, which started with 1.4 million viewers to wrap up season two with over five million a week?
Stephen Moyer: It’s extraordinary. But without being disingenuous, we all thought it had the potential to do so well. I think there was also only one episode in the first season that didn’t go up. So they’ve all kind of done that and done that and done that. I think it helped that every episode last year was bigger than the last.

PW: What are your feelings going into Emmy season?
Stephen: I think awards expose the show to a wider audience, making them realize we’re not your run of the mill show. But typically The Emmys don’t seem to go for genre shows, so honestly, I’m not sure that any of us expect anything this year. Don’t get me wrong, it would be lovely if it happened, but I don’t think any of us are expecting anything.

PW: What did you think of season two over all?
Stephen: Michelle Forbes was amazing. There was a moment of “what the f*** are we doing?” But it worked.

PW: And how does this year differ?
Stephen: The new season doesn’t have the same sort of out of control craziness because we’ve stopped searching out the crazy, the crazy is just coming to every single one of us.

PW: Yes, the crazy is kidnapping Bill.
Stephen: Yea. He’s lost, he’s on his own.

PW: The first two years were very Bill/Sookie heavy — were you excited to film with actors aside from, or in addition to, Anna?
Stephen: I think we both were. Obviously we’re well aware that, as TV viewers and knowing what our show is now, you just can’t watch two people be together forever. Alan [Ball, creator] said, happy relationships are great in real life but they’re not very interesting on TV [laughs]. I love working with Anna, absolutely love it, but it’s nice to work with other people.
