Preview of True Blood Comic 9 by Michael McMillian

Posted by Lynnpd On February - 18 - 2013

Rev. Newlin, our own Michael McMillian, is back writing another True Blood comic. In this preview of True Blood #9, we learn that he has again scripted a tale from a story he created with the help of Annie Nocenti, and featuring art from Michael Gaydos and Beni Lobel. In the story we find that the vampires and werewolves are working together and it seems that when you shoot a werewolf, it goes back to being a naked human.

Ann Nocenti

True Blood has had lots of success with it’s comic books. The ongoing True Blood series Volume 2 comic is currently being co-writing with Michael McMillian (Rev Steve Newlin on True Blood) by Ann Nocenti . True Blood Comic’s Ann Kirla has interviewed Ann about her experience and below is that interview:

TBC: You have a very impressive resume from comic books to film making and teaching. Does your comic book writing influence you in the other areas of your life?
AN: Absolutely. In comics, (and in film) you try to express yourself in pictures, and keep the pacing lively. After writing so many comics, that sensibility has steered the way I write journalism. And writing journalism effects comics writing: no matter how wild the ideas and storyline, I always want things grounded in a sense of reality. I studied fine art, was a painter, etcher, photography, and fell into comics by happy accident. I didn’t grow up reading them. But perhaps because I was an artist, I took to them instantly, was charmed by them and wanted to write them.

TBC: How did you get involved with the True Blood comic book series?
AN: Denton Tipton (current editor of the True Blood comic book at IDW) and a previous editor had been reaching out to me for a while, and I was already a True Blood fan, so it was an easy fit.

TBC: Did HBO/True Blood/IDW give you story ideas to work with and how creative were you allowed to be? What’s it like co-writing with Michael McMilian (Rev Steve Newlin in True Blood)?
AN: Michael McMillian created the first 4 issue storyline, and I stepped up to help with story mechanics and dialog, and then we’ll switch places and I’ll generate a trilogy that he’ll react to. It’s a great team, with Michael being the most intimate with the material, he’s kind of the touchstone for what stories to tell, what would be fun for the fans. Plus, since he’s on the set and is privy to secrets I’m not, he can put in teasers.

TBC: How do you feel the comic book storyline fits in with the series? Is there any overlap from the show storylines into the comic book?
AN: The idea is to not tread on the toes of the series, but to create stories that weave in and around the series turf, filling in gaps, giving juicy tidbits, keeping it all alive.

TBC: Who is your favorite character to write for and why?
AN: I adore Eric, but it’s really Michael that’s nailed his sassy deadpan wit. Michael’s the lead writer on the first batch of stories, and then I take a turn with a trilogy of Alcide and werewolf stories. Alcide is still a bit of a mystery man, so that will be fun. I adore Lafayette (who doesn’t?) but I also look forward to writing some of the support cast, like Andy Bellefleur: he just walks into a scene and he’s funny.

alt=Recently we posted that True Blood’s Michael McMillian will continue writing the True Blood comic books. Now, Comic Book Resources has met with Michael and Ann Nocenti to get their thoughts on the ongoing series, its place within the show’s mythology, and what they have planned for the first arc and beyond. Below is a portion of that interview:

The second “True Blood” miniseries, “Tainted Love,” also represented McMillian’s second foray into comics following “Lucid” at Archaia. (The first and third “True Blood” miniseries were both co-written by David Tischman and Mariah Huehner.) “That was a great opportunity to write the ‘True Blood’ characters I love, work with a comics pro like [co-writer] Marc Andreyko and venture further into writing for comics,” McMillian said of “Tainted Love.” “I’m very grateful for the experience and doubly so to be back for ongoing.”

McMillian said his acting role as Steve Newlin on “True Blood” does help in writing scenes and dialogue for the characters. “My biggest goal with the ongoing comic is to make it feel like the show in tone and character. I thought Marc and I did a pretty good job of it in ‘Tainted Love,’ but I want to take it even further with the ongoing,” McMillian said. “We’ll actually be stepping back from the larger ensemble a bit and focusing on fewer characters at a time within each story arc, which I think will really help spotlight each member of the cast. The comic really is an extension of the world Alan Ball and the writers and actors have created on the show, so imagining my co-stars speaking individual lines of dialogue Ann Nocenti and I write is essential to the process. If I can’t ‘hear’ Alex Skarsgard delivering one of Eric’s quips that we come up with, then it doesn’t pass the test. In all honesty, I’m trying to write towards Alan’s sensibilities at the end of the day. If he’s happy with the script, then I’m happy. It’s his world and his voice.

Co-writing the “True Blood” ongoing series with Nocenti offers a different dynamic from the previous mini, and McMillian said that so far it’s working nicely. “Ann is this total pro and comics vet. I read her run on ‘Daredevil’ back in the ’80s and loved it so it’s a little embarrassing for me to come in as this actor and start elaborating on what I think we should do,” McMillian said. “The truth is I’m just really passionate about ‘True Blood.’ I love working on the show, I love playing Steve Newlin, and I think that outlook could be overbearing for a new writer coming aboard. But she’s been really cool with me taking the reins on the first arc and trying to establish that tone I was talking about. We’ve got our first year’s worth of story-arcs planned out and she’ll be helming our next major plot, so I think we’ll passing the baton back and forth as we go.

So far Michael is the quarterback. He came up with the clever and seminal first trilogy, and wrote the first plot drafts. Then we bounce things back and forth, with me acting more as a scene-shaper and detail girl,” Nocenti said of their process. “Michael is a natural storyteller, and a dream to work with. We seem to have developed a sense of trust so that we throw out tons of ideas, no matter how stupid, and know the other guy will cherry-pick just the good stuff.”

The ongoing series will focus on shorter arcs with smaller casts than the HBO series

While Nocenti has said she was unfamiliar with “Green Arrow” before accepting the assignment — nor, for that matter, did she have encyclopedic knowledge of Matt Murdock prior to her landmark “Daredevil” run — this was not the case with “True Blood. “Oh, yes. I was a fan. The show is terrifically addicting,” Nocenti said. “Funny, smart writing, just the right balance of soap opera and gore. I grew up fascinated by the nether realms of mythology and their metaphoric possibilities. The social satirical touches in the series are sharp without being too heavy. And the opening credits make me swoon. Fantastic.”

Nocenti said she sees the comic as augmenting the television series by expanding what’s possible in the “True Blood” universe.I think the comic series can offer a wildness that you can’t see on the TV show due to budget constraints. Michael just came up with an aerial vampire battle that would have added a small fortune to the budget. The great thing about comics is that anything can be drawn,” she said. “If you want someone’s head to explode, roll, pause to talk, no problem. And the skill of the content of the series will be to tell great tales, but also find moments that ‘wow’ fans, give them juicy tidbits between characters without giving away anything upcoming in the series. This will be more Michael’s domain, as he is far more versed in the series than I am. I’d like to have our stories be provocative and clear enough so that new readers aren’t lost. I would love to attract new readers from the comics world that have never even seen the show, who then go on to watch the show.

McMillian, too, sees great possibilities for the comic series, and said the ongoing format allows for “bigger canvas, shorter story arcs, fewer characters at a time.” “Instead of telling six-issue arcs that focus on the very large ensemble of ‘True Blood’ characters, we’ll be telling 3-4 issue arcs that focus on a handful of characters,” he told CBR News. “Sookie will always be the center of our universe, but we may even stray from the the main cast at certain points for single issue stories that focus on supporting characters we’d love to see more of in the show. This actually helps us keep it a little loose and stay true to the show’s continuity without being beholden to what’s happening next Sunday night. Once in a while we’ll do a big arc with the entire ensemble, but those stories should feel special. If the TV series is the main attraction, then the comic is the sideshow. It’s going to be really fun, weird and hopefully shed light on certain corners of the ‘True Blood’ universe you won’t see anywhere else. With an ongoing, we also have the opportunity to play a long game. Elements of a story from the first arc may resonate later in the series. Over the long run the comic will have established a solid continuity. I’m really excited with where this can go.”

Pre-Order Your True Blood Series 4, Volume 1 Comic Now!

Posted by Lynnpd On February - 17 - 2012

As Michael McMillian, True Blood’s Reverend Steve Newlin revealed recently, he will, once again, be a writer for the True Blood Comics.

The first volume in the fourth series will be available in May, but can be pre-ordered at the HBO Online Store now.

IDW Publishing’s “True Blood” ongoing series has now revealed the full creative team on “True Blood” Series 4. The ongoing will be written by “Green Arrow” writer Ann Nocenti and “True Blood” actor Michael McMillian with creative collaboration from “True Blood” producer Alan Ball and art by Michael Gaydos. IDW initially posted the pre-order link on its Facebook Page with a cover image of “True Blood” #1. At this time, IDW has not released specific details about the direction of the series or how it will link to the critically acclaimed HBO television show.

Nocenti recently returned to comics after a fifteen-year hiatus to the New 52′s “Green Arrow.” In 2011, the former “Daredevil” writer expounded on her excitement coming back to comics.

“I did a monthly for DC, “Kid Eternity,” but I’m having all these flashbacks to writing “Daredevil” and the affectionate bond that develops between you and your character and how they’re always in your head,” Nocenti told CBR News. “Everywhere you go and everything you do, it’s sort of like they become your pal; they’re hanging out in your head! [Laughs] It’s a really sweet feeling to have this heroic buddy that you carry around with you; when I do things, he’s always there. I don’t quite have that feeling yet, completely, for Green Arrow, because I’ve only just started. I remember over the years with Daredevil, he became quite real for me. It’s a lot of fun.”

McMillian co-wrote IDW’s second “True Blood” series, “Tainted Love,” and is also known for his Archaia series “Lucid.” The writer/actor spoke with CBR News in 2011 about “Tainted Love” and his view on comics expanding the “True Blood” universe and mythology.

“I think the comic can play a role in exploring areas of the ‘True Blood’ world that the show may not be able to get to,” McMillian said. “Marc [Andreyko] came up with the wonderful idea of Tru Blood bottles getting contaminated with an element that causes vampires to go crazy. Since the bottled blood is the link between vampire/human relations, it’s such a great device to mess with. Tainting that symbolic connection seemed like an apt reflection of where vampire/human relations were left off in Season 3. On another level, the theme of contamination is at play with the main cast of characters. Their lives have been drastically affected since Bill walked into Sookie’s life. Are they themselves tainted? A lot of our characters kick off the series with a longing to return to the way things were before… to reclaim a feeling of lost, perhaps even false, innocence.”

IDW announced the “True Blood” ongoing series in late 2011 following three miniseries based on the television show: “True Blood: All Together Now,” “True Blood: Tainted Love” and “True Blood: The French Quarter.”

Yea, Reverend Steve Newlin will be back on True Blood. Michael McMillian who spectacularly played the vampire hating Reverend has been a fan favorite and we welcome his return.

Michael was interviewed this week on the “God Hates Fangs” podcast which is hosted by AphroditeMF and her husband. During the interview, Michael talked about Steve Newlin’s return to season 5, and, he of course, wasn’t permitted to leak too much about what’s to come, but he did speak about getting fitted for his fangs.

Michael said of Season 5: “It’s gonna be really, really good. The whole season so far has been great. It’s very vampire centered.

I think season five is gonna start paying off the promises of the first four seasons. It’s like, OK, now you know the way the world works, we’ve introduced these separate plot lines, these separate characters, and it’s really starting to come together this season in a big, big way.”

He also spoke about the future of the True Blood comic series.  The Vault did an exclusive interview with Michael last year when his True Blood Comic was published, so we’re very familiar with his participation in the series. He told the interviewers that the comics are now scheduled to be released monthly and he will be returning as one of the writers.

Also, Michael stated during the interview that he is a good friend to Deborah Ann Woll and EJ Scott, and is supporting their efforts to raise funds for the CRF by donating some of his comic books.
