The New Teen Fad: Biting Like Vampires

Posted by Lisafemmeacadienne On August - 24 - 2010

Kim Hone-McMahan, writer for the Akron Beacon journal, has written an interesting article on a new trend for teens; biting. It has been practiced by sub-cultures in big cities for many years, regardless of the risk of blood diseases, such as hepatitis. There is a fine line between fun/ fantasy, and being masochistic. Do teens know the difference?

bites2 The New Teen Fad: Biting Like Vampires

The popularity of the “Twilight” series, both the books and movies, and television hits like HBO’s “True Blood” might be causing some kids to imitate the behavior of their favorite vampires, according to ABC News and other outlets. Teens are even using Internet sites like YouTube to post videos of their bites, usually involving the arm, face or neck.

Nneka Holder, an adolescent medicine specialist at Akron Children’s Hospital, warns that a human bite is not something to trivialize. “Human mouths are not much cleaner than a dog’s mouth,” said Holder, who added that bites that cause infection could land a child in the hospital.

Some people bite or give hickeys as a sign of possession, warning others to keep away from the victim. “Anything done like that to show ownership is not a healthy relationship,” said Joseph Salwan, a psychologist with the Akron Family Institute.

Teens’ attraction to vampire tales is nothing new. “Vampires lure us into our dark side, and for some of us, that is a thrilling literary adventure,” said 18-year-old Maddie Winer. “I think vampire movies . . . are popular because they are so exotic, especially in ‘Twilight’s’ case. You have unconventional vampires that don’t eat humans, but rather are ‘vegetarians’ that eat animal blood.”

Mentioning the ‘Twilight Saga Eclipse’  and the ‘True Blood’ series by HBO, the ‘CBS Early Show’ reported that fans may have taken the vampire premise a bit too far when it comes to this latest craze. Fans are showing affection to each other by biting and drawing blood.

This could cause a series of health problems, but more importantly, it is a fad that is caused by biting another person. These bite marks are seen on tweens, teens and even young adults all over visible body parts.  The more bite marks, the more you are “loved”.

In Los Angeles, bite marks can be seen on kids who walk down the street. In the mall, the kids are proud of these marks, and show them off to anyone who asks.

True Blood books vs. show – the never ending question

Posted by Lynnpd On August - 9 - 2010

postertrueblood 200x200 True Blood books vs. show the never ending questionAt the Ask Matt column over at TV Guide the following was asked about True Blood:

Question: Do you have any idea of what percentage of the True Blood audience has actually read the books? Or are they just louder fans than those of us who only watch the series? Do you think that Team Bill fans will have their hearts ripped out a la Maryann? — Dana

Matt Roush: Haven’t a clue how many True Blood watchers are also readers of the Charlaine Harris books, but I’ve done both and find each experience satisfying in its own way (although I wasn’t crazy about the most recent book). They are just different enough—kind of like the Dexter books vs. the Showtime series—that I find myself enjoying them for their differences. And that includes the way the Sookie-Bill-Eric triangle is playing out. (This season complicated by the arrival of Alcide; insert wolf whistle here.) I don’t know exactly where Alan Ball’s version is headed, but I would expect a major upheaval between Sookie and Bill before long, just to keep things interesting. [MILD SPOILER ALERT] Whether any estrangement will be as long-lasting as what happens in the books, I don’t know, but I would doubt it—mostly because of the on- and off-camera chemistry of the leads and because it’s probably not in the show’s best interest to marginalize Bill over the long haul.

Whatever happens, and I’m still rooting for the show to tackle the fourth book at some point (with a very strong Sookie-Eric story), I’m betting True Blood will give both Team Bill and Team Eric opportunities to win and lose a few along the way. And while it’s fun to take sides, my advice as always is to take all the fan noise from either camp with a pinch of salt—or in this case, garlic.

Who is the most chivalrous man on True Blood?

Posted by Lynnpd On July - 20 - 2010

denisohare2 268x300 Who is the most chivalrous man on True Blood?True Blood sure has it’s own way of turning the meaning of Southern Chivalry on it’s head when portraying it in their characters. In this article from Hollywood.com we see how the show has managed to “shake up” our assumptions about the south and it’s gentlemen.

I suppose you could say that Franklin Mott has some sort of chivalry, however warped it may be. But for me, I ask where is Bill Compton, the most chivalrous vampire there is and what about Eric Northman, Sam Merlotte, Hoyt Fortenberry, just to name a few? And, although very evil, the King of Misssippi seems to be quite chivalrous, in his fashion.

In other words, there are just too many True Blood men missing from this list for my taste. However, what is listed, is a good read.  Let us know what you think about this.

Romanticized by “Gone With the Wind” scribe Margaret Mitchell, Southern Chivalry and gentleman’s behavior is merely an extension of the European medieval definition. Sure, chivalry has a lot to do with the manners of knights and how they should be just, brave and polite during battle, but it also covers the area of courtship and how a gentleman should treat a woman. The basic customs include laying one’s cape on the ground over a puddle for a lady, lighting their cigarette and picking up the cafe tab. During Civil War times, a chivalrous Confederate soldier might guard a woman’s plantation against Union foes — that is if no other men were present at the home. In sum, southern guys are the ideal romantics, whose suaveness always trumped the carpetbaggers from the north.

So who is the most chivalrous on “True Blood”? Which alpha male’s charm is so desirable that no woman can resist? Let’s take a look:

ALCIDE HERVEAUX (Joe Manganiello)
Going beyond his duties to follow the orders of his superiors and Eric, Alcide the werewolf makes it his business to protect Sookie Stackhouse and assist with the search of her lover Bill Compton, even though he’s a vampire. Alcide shows restraint by putting his supposed desires for Sookie aside; hence he’s a noble Southern gentleman.

JASON STACKHOUSE (Ryan Kwanten)
A half naked Jason abuses his privileges as a Bon Temp cop in training and fires up a squad car to court a little vixen named Crystal Norris (Lindsay Pulsipher). She doesn’t buy Jason’s banter, but he cuts to the chase and heads straight for her heart with one question: “Why were you crying when I saw you earlier?…I’m Jason Stackhouse and I wanna know you.” Is Stackhouse a model of Southern Chivalry? Heck, yes. Crystal knows immediately that she can rely on him to protect the henhouse against werewolves. But keep this in mind: if Sheriff Andy Bellefleur was bare-chested and pursuing Crystal, it wouldn’t be dignified by Southern standards — it would be downright perverted.

FRANKLIN MOTT(James Frain)
Ever the romantic, vampire Franklin Mott loves Tara Thornton so much he ties her to a bed. Tara escapes in a grand epic scene, but is pursued and nabbed by the estate’s guard wolf. Mott is in tears.

“But you tied me up…” says Tara

“…to keep you safe!” laments Mott. Tara fibs that she fled because she was scared of the other bloodsuckers, but Mott pledges, like a Civil War soldier, “I’ll never let them touch you.”

And if you thought Mott didn’t have any manners, just wait girls. He promises to take Tara to Shoney’s for dinner (the southern version of Denny’s) and gets down on one knee to propose that he’ll turn her into a vampire. Is Franklin a model of Southern Chivalry? Of course! (In his own twisted head). But in reality, Mott is a therapist’s field day.

Yes, we can add Bill Compton and Terry Bellefleur to the list of the lionhearted below the Mason-Dixon line, but it’s wonderful how Harris and Ball fool with the archetype, particularly in the complexity of Franklin.

It appears that there are a lot of ties to Wilmington,  North Carolina in True Blood or so the article below tells us. Wilmington seems to have some uncanny ties to specifically werewolves and HBO is treating Wilmington folks well.  It seems there are lots of cool places where vampires and werewolves would hang out and they’d even drink the beer.

Well, at least “True Blood” is. A close look at the actors, guests and even crew of the hit television series is sprinkled with hints of Wilmington, much like blood sprinkled on a white death shroud.

First, there’s Joe Manganiello, True Blood’s Alcide who played bartender Owen Morello on “One Tree Hill.” Manganiello has grown out his hair and his beard, and has spent more time in the gym for this role.

Though he’s filming the series in L.A., he still hasn’t forgotten about Wilmington. In a phone interview, he said that if vampires and werewolves lived in Wilmington, they’d probably hang out at Blue Post Billiards. “I think the person who would be able to direct you to them would be “Big D” O’Dell, the guy (who gives) the ghost tour,” Manganiello said. “I would imagine it would be somewhere downtown. I mean, obviously they’d probably be hanging out in a bar right off of the Cape Fear River.”

WOLFBEERCOLOGO 300x300 True Blood features beer, actors, etc. tied to Wilmington NCDowntown is just one of the things the actor misses about Wilmington. He said the local restaurants, especially the Dixie Grill, and the beach also top his list. “It’s very difficult to get a good fried green tomato here,” he said.

While we all know what vampires drink, if you see Manganiello’s werewolf character tossing down a cold one at a werewolf bar, look closely. It could likely be a Wolf Beer, a brand owned by local brewer Jonathan Olson. The Watha-based Olson distributes the beer from Wilmington and other locales in North Carolina, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Olson got a call from HBO and was told they wanted to use his beer on the series. “They Googled something and I was the first to come up,” he said.

He’d never heard of “True Blood,” so he told them no. Then, a friend explained the huge popularity of the show and Olson called them back. He ended up giving them some light boxes with the Wolf Beer logo on it, some beer taps and some empty boxes.

It was pretty cool. I’ve seen the show since then. … It’s pretty big having HBO basically marketing for you,” he said. “I don’t think any of my competitors can say that.

Though he didn’t get paid and there’s no guarantee his product will be shown on the series, Olson said he has a pretty good feeling that his beer logo of a white wolf will get at least some air time. HBO e-mailed him just last week to ask if he’d sign a release form so Wolf Beer could be discussed on the Blue Ray DVD of the third season.

Olson sells three varieties of Wolf Beer in more than 50 locations in the Wilmington area and elsewhere on the East Coast. The “wolf” on the bottle is actually his wolf-hybrid named Sol Locks, who can often be seen riding around Wilmington with him. Each month his company works to raise money for a different animal organizations including the Humane Society and a wolf sanctuary.

But the ties to Wilmington don’t end with at the bar.

bethgrant 400x290 True Blood features beer, actors, etc. tied to Wilmington NC“True Blood” also tapped the acting talents of New Hanover High School graduate Beth Grant. She appeared in an HBO “mini-sode” called “A Drop of True Blood,” featuring the “True Blood” vampire, Bill Compton (played by Stephen Moyer).

She didn’t know about the show’s Wilmington ties but thinks vampires and werewolves would probably hang out at the Bellamy Mansion or one of the other old homes. “Vampire Bill’s house would be one of those old mansions downtown,” she said. “When I was a girl that area wasn’t restored down there.

Grant remembers being a child and noticing an old, unpainted house on one block. And although it was dilapidated, the people who lived there always kept the brass doorknob brightly polished.

Grant doesn’t get back to Wilmington very often, although she was one of the celebrity guests at last year’s Azalea Festival. And she might come back in August to enjoy her favorite thing about the area – Wrightsville Beach.

Although Grant has appeared in numerous television shows and feature films including “No Country for Old Men,” “Crazy Heart” and “King of the Hill,” she’s only done one project in Wilmington. She spent three weeks on a movie of the week called “To Dance With Olivia.”

There’s no word on whether the minisode will lead to a role in “True Blood,” but Grant said she’s keeping her fingers crossed.

“Well, I’d do anything for (“True Blood” writer/creator) Alan Ball, though. If he asked me to run down the street and gargle peanut butter I would do it,” she said. “But when I read (the minisode), I just absolutely fell in love with it. My agent was a little, ‘Well what is a minisode? I don’t know if you should do that.’ And I said, ‘I am doing this. This is some of the best writing I have ever seen.’ And then to get to do it with vampire Bill who is so hot and so cute. And what a lovely gentleman he is.”

The Port City’s “True Blood” ties don’t end there, though.

Time Warner employees were encouraged to give back because blood donations are usually low during the summer months.

“At Time Warner Cable, one of our missions and values is community, so any time that we can give employees the opportunity to give back to the community that have always supported us in terms of customers, they’re grateful to do it,” said Stephanie Salanger, TWC Communications Manager.

Time Warner Cable is the parent company of YNN.

True Blood and other HBO Shows Now Available on PS3 & PSP

Posted by Lynnpd On May - 25 - 2010

Now, here’s a good reason to get a PSP or PS3.  I am not a gamer myself, but I sure can’t get enough of my True Blood.  Here’s just one more way that enables us to see the show.

tbpsp True Blood and other HBO Shows Now Available on PS3 & PSP

In an effort to help justify the purchase of a PSP or PS3 to the non-gaming spouse in your life, Sony has rolled out HBO show downloads to the PSP and PlayStation 3.  Season one and two of True Blood, Big Love seasons one through three, Entourage seasons one and two, Eastbound and Down season and one, as well as multiple seasons of The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Rome, Da Ali G Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Flight of the Concords will be available to download too. There is no word on pricing. And as convenient as it is to be able to get these show through your PSP or PS3, we’d prefer if they were ad-supported and available for free. Or else we might just go broke from watching all of our favorite HBO shows this way.

HBO/True Blood re”vamps” their site

Posted by Lynnpd On January - 21 - 2010

HBO has relaunched HBO.com/trueblood that includes a whole new look for True Blood on the net.   Adding interactive features and enhanced video support, the new flash-based site features streaming video, as all television sites do, but supports full screen clips regardless of the monitor’s size or resolution.

HBO 600x335 HBO/True Blood revamps their site

On the interactive front, the site has an advanced community section, with users building profiles to comment on clips and articles, and talk with HBO insiders. It also has a personal dashboard where users can add clips, discussions or favorites, as well as receive recommendations based on previous selections. So, you can still post on the HBO True Blood Boards and it’s Wiki.

“We wanted to create a rich, interactive online destination worthy of the HBO brand,” said Alison Moore, vice president, Brand Strategy and Digital Platforms. “Fully dynamic, the new HBO.com allows us to extend HBO’s promotional digital footprint through a rich and engaging design that is built upon a platform of technical innovation.”
