HBO/True Blood re”vamps” their site

Posted by Lynnpd On January - 21 - 2010

HBO has relaunched HBO.com/trueblood that includes a whole new look for True Blood on the net.   Adding interactive features and enhanced video support, the new flash-based site features streaming video, as all television sites do, but supports full screen clips regardless of the monitor’s size or resolution.

On the interactive front, the site has an advanced community section, with users building profiles to comment on clips and articles, and talk with HBO insiders. It also has a personal dashboard where users can add clips, discussions or favorites, as well as receive recommendations based on previous selections. So, you can still post on the HBO True Blood Boards and it’s Wiki.

“We wanted to create a rich, interactive online destination worthy of the HBO brand,” said Alison Moore, vice president, Brand Strategy and Digital Platforms. “Fully dynamic, the new HBO.com allows us to extend HBO’s promotional digital footprint through a rich and engaging design that is built upon a platform of technical innovation.”

I know we’re already in 2010 and we usually don’t look back after the new year starts, but there is yet again, another “best of” nod for True Blood that I thought should you should know about.

Here’s what they had to say bout True Blood:

1) TRUE BLOOD

Why it Rocked: Because this is how a vampire show should be, screw TWILIGHT or NEW MOON or THE VAMPIRE DIARIES. Adult, brutal, sexy and foul-mouthed. Now we are talking. The exploits of Sookie Stackhouse and Bill the Vampire along with the other members of the show continued to heat up as the threat from a church dedicated to wiping out the vamps and an immortal being looking to sacrifice a shape shifter to her beloved Pagan god. While it took a while to get to the final battle with the immortal being, the pay off was glorious and fun all the same.

Memorable Moment: Dumb-as-a-rock Jason playing hero and coming up with some of the best lines from the show to date including this gem “Do you think Sam could turn into a chicken and lay his own eggs?”

Here’s the remaining choices:

2) TORCHWOOD – CHILDREN OF EARTH
3) BEING HUMAN
4) LEVERAGE
5) 24

True Blood takes another bite out of Twilight

Posted by Lynnpd On January - 2 - 2010
True-Blood-s1e11a

The visitors to The Vault are well aware of how good True Blood is, and we also know that it took awhile for some skeptics to see the light and realize its goodness.  Also, we have read endless comparisons of True Blood and Twilight.  However, I particularly liked this article which lists many of the reasons that True Blood has been so successful and overpowers all it’s “vampire” competition, specifically Twilight. It’s a Canadian viewpoint that we sure agree with from the Times & Transcript.  While the writer has only seen Season 1 so far, she sure knows good TV when she sees it.

If you haven’t been living under a rock for the past year you will have noticed that practically every where you look, there is a new book, book series, TV show, magazine layout or movie about or involving vampires.

It isn’t a mystery why. The Twilight books and the ensuing movies ignited the vampire craze which has since been fueled by opportunistic merchandisers peddling swag, music, jewelry, clothing and general merchandise of all sorts. The real wildfire began in November 2008 with the release of the first movie, but it had already been smoldering ever since the first book hit the shelves in 2005.

Brace yourselves, Stephenie Meyers fans. Impossible as this may seem, I think I have stumbled upon a vampire saga that is much, much better than Twilight.

Over the past month or so, I have regularly visited our local Blockbuster to rent episode after episode of this year’s “IT” show — TRUE BLOOD. At first, as with any show, I was skeptical, but I was also impressed with the reviews so decided to check out the show for myself. HBO’s most recent breakout success, currently filming a third season due to popular demand, True Blood is a series like no other I’ve ever seen on television. True Blood is set in present day Louisiana back country in a small town named Bon Temps; the USA has recently been shaken by the reality that Vampires have officially admitted their existence, and that they plan to pursue their right to live among humans in a peaceful coexistence. This ‘peaceful’ inclusion in society has been made possible by the Japanese invention of a synthetic blood that enables vampires to stay alive without killing humans. Sookie Stackhouse, a local waitress (brilliantly played by Anna Paquin), is drawn into the vampire world when she falls in love with a new arrival in town. His name is Bill Compton, and along with his arrival in Bon Temps he brings dozens of new adventures and trials for Sookie and for the people in this small southern town.

Now, I acknowledge that there are many Twilight fans out there who may scoff at my discovery, but as a die-hard (no pun intended) member of the Anti-Twilight movement, I feel we should take a close look at both franchises to determine which is actually the superior. This is the ultimate FANG-OFF 2010. Twilight vs. True Blood. Here comes a basic breakdown of why I believe True Blood should be your number 1 choice:

The Characters:

Twilight – Bella Swan, the clumsy, indecisive, illogical, unpopular and just downright whiny teenager who is hopelessly in love (we have no idea why) with Edward Cullen, the local hot piece of undead man meat.

True Blood – Sookie Stackhouse, the down to earth, feisty, independent, brave waitress who can take care of herself and even (get this, kids) on occasion has actual issues about her boyfriend, Bill (her gentlemanly, protective and otherwise perfect love interest) being a vampire. Sookie can read the minds of the people around her, which has set her outside of ‘normal’ in Bon Temps and caused her much heartache, but Bill’s thoughts are silent to her, which she finds fascinating. In the first episode, she saves Bill from humans who are trying to drain his blood. Personally, I find her more relatable and interesting than anything you will find in Twilight.

In addition to Bill and Sookie, True Blood also features dozens of complex, believable and appealing supporting personalities, as opposed to Twilight with its lovable (yet exceedingly predictable) teenage population.

True Blood among 10 TV shows that mattered in 2009

Posted by Lynnpd On December - 30 - 2009
true-blood-logo

Globemedia in Toronto, Canada has come up with the best 10 TV shows that mattered in 2009 and True Blood is smack dab in the center of the crowd at #5 on their list. They also site Stephen and Anna as the cutest couple on TV!

1. Glee (Fox, Global)
2. Battle of the Blades (CBC)
3. Being Erica (CBC)
4. Corner Gas (CTV)
5. True Blood (HBO)- Further proof that television can easily outpace film for cleverness, wit and originality. While the vampire craze caused by the Twilight movies at first made sense only to adolescents, True Blood strutted onto the air with an adult swagger. Dead sexy, funny and often sublimely satirical, it’s the best twist on soap-opera shenanigans since Twin Peaks. Even the opening credits are worth watching week after week. And Bill and Sookie (Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin) are the cutest couple in TV.
6. Mad Men (AMC)
7. Modern Family (ABC, CITY-TV)
8. Dexter (Showtime)
9. Nurse Jackie (Showtime)
10. Lost (ABC, CTV)

True Blood makes another 10 fav of 2009 list

Posted by Lynnpd On December - 30 - 2009
trueblood5

The Orlando Sentinal has come out with their top 10 favorites of 2009 and once again, True Blood is on the list.  These lists are almost getting tiresome, but we’re not complaining, since we think True Blood is the best in TV.

Here are the 10 scripted series that provided the most entertainment:

1. “Mad Men”
2. “The Good Wife”
3. “True Blood” is television’s best vampire series. Its stellar second season featured fierce contributions from Alexander Skarsgård as the sexy, underhanded vampire Eric; Michelle Forbes as the mischief-making, orgy-throwing Maryann; and Ryan Kwanten as the surprisingly heroic Jason. Of course, Anna Paquin remains the show’s vital center as lovable, mind-reading heroine Sookie Stackhouse.
4. “The Big Bang Theory”
5. “Friday Night Lights”
6. “Lost”
7. “Breaking Bad”
8. “Nurse Jackie”
9. “The Mentalist”
10. “The Vampire Diaries” for being TV’s second best vampire series and for showing there is life in the struggling CW.

The first airing of new episodes of the second season of HBO’s True Blood topped all scripted cable shows for 2009 with adults 18-49 with an average 3.522 million (includes week’s worth of DVR viewing, and the rest of the numbers listed are Live+7, too).

True Blood was also the number one show with adults 18-34 with 2.013 million, followed by South Park’s 1.796 million and Sons of Anarchy with 1.655 million.

True Blood Makes another ‘BEST OF 2009′ list

Posted by Lynnpd On December - 24 - 2009

Progressive Pulse Blog, a blog about politics, TV, Travel, Fashion, Music and green living has come out with “Jim’s Best of Television 2009″. Although, they picked Breaking Bad, (Stephen Moyer’s favorite show) as the Best Drama of 2009, look who made the Runner Up!

Congratulations once again, to True Blood!

Here’s what they had to say:

Best Drama: Breaking Bad (AMC) While Mad Men had a great season and earned more ink across the board, that ‘other AMC drama’ about everyman Walter White falling deeper and deeper into the world of cooking and dealing crystal meth was always at the top of its game. The story threads through season two took more twists and turns without ever losing its way as Walter’s secret professional life and his personal life continued to dangerously cross and audiences could only sit back and watch in horror and glee. Kudos to cast members Bryan Cranston (who has now won two-Emmys for his role) and Aaron Paul for never playing the same note in their portrayals of Walter and put-through-the-wringer Jesse and, of course, to show creator Vince Gilligan who steered this ship to greatness.

* Runner Up: True Blood (HBO) No other show created more talk around the water cooler and took the craziest, out-of-this-world stories and miraculously made them work. In its second season, the Alan Ball-created show is much more than just a vampire show and, instead, created characters to care about (Lafayette’s torture), cheer for (go Sookie & Eric!) and loathe in a good way (MaryAnn) as well as be that show that knows how to tell a story engagingly and effectively. Oh, and could there be a better looking group of men in one place? Nelsan Ellis, Alexander Skarsgard, Ryan Kwanten, Sam Trammel, Stephen Moyer and (hubba hubba) Mehcad Brooks. One mistake that could be rectified in this anything-goes world – killing off Godric (Allan Hyde), whose death was so surprisingly emotional and effective that it’s a shame we won’t see more of him…or will we?

Vampires are IN for 2010

Posted by Lynnpd On December - 22 - 2009
bill_eric

The Morning Sun has made a list of what is definitely IN and what is definitely OUT for 2010.  I’ll let you go to the article to read their list but, it was interesting to see that since we already know True Blood will be introducing “the Weres” in Season 3, that the Sun also mentioned werewolves in their comment about the vamps!  Here’s what they had to say about vampires which they listed as #2 on their list:

Vampires: If you’re watching a movie or a TV show or reading a book right now, I can only hope someone in it is getting his or her blood sucked, or else whatever you’re watching or reading is out. Vampires are everywhere, thanks to “Twilight,” “True Blood” and books like the Darren Shan saga — they’re the new black. But 2010 will see the release of the “Wolfman” reboot, so you can expect werewolves to come roaring back in as well. Frankenstein is still out. Sorry, Frank.

How DVR’s are changing ratings and True Blood benefits

Posted by Lynnpd On December - 11 - 2009

truebloodposterseason2_2The New York Times ART Section has an interesting story about how using DVR’s (Digital Video Recording devices) has changed how the TV ratings are calculated. For cable shows like True Blood this may have been a real plus.  True Blood is considered an appointment viewing show but also can be watched multiple times during the week and is available for saving to your DVR. using cable on demand services.  This new technology has allowed us all to be sure to see the show whenever it’s convenient!  Here’s the top ten list of time-shifted prime time television programs and what the NYTimes has to say about it:

What was 2009’s most-watched regular series? The Wednesday edition of “American Idol,” of course. The single most-watched telecast? Super Bowl XLIII, natch. The program with the most occurrences of product placement? “The Jay Leno Show,” with 1,015 placements since its September debut. (Yowza.)

We could spend all day regurgitating this stuff, but we’d like to point your attention in particular to Nielsen’s list of the top 10 time-shifted prime time television programs. These aren’t the 10 most-recorded shows, per se, but the 10 shows whose ratings have benefited most from time-shifted viewings. The shows, and the percentage increases that their ratings have enjoyed from time-shifting, are:

1. “Battlestar Galactica” (59.4)
2. “Mad Men” (57.7)
3. “Damages” (56.3)
4. “Rescue Me” (53.2)
5.(tie) “True Blood” (46.9)
5.(tie) “Stargate Universe” (46.9)
7.(tie) “Sanctuary” (45.9)
7.(tie) “Heroes” (45.9)
9. “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” (45.5)
10.(tie) “10 Things I Hate About You” (44.9)
10.(tie) “Dollhouse” (44.9)
10.(tie) “Melrose Place” (44.9)
