Gary Calamar talks about the True Blood Out4Blood Event

Posted by Lynnpd On February - 2 - 2010

Gary Calamar DJ’d the Out4Blood event last Friday night at the Echoplex in Los Angeles. This event highlighted Gary’s Grammy nominated compilation soundtrack for True Blood. Although the line up of musicians was really impressive, he never let on to me that there was a surprise in store for those who attended.  Now that the event is over we know that the “surprise guests” were several major members of the cast.

Prior to the event, I asked Gary if he would be willing to send The Vault information and a few photos about the night. He graciously sent along the following photos and his recount of the vampire evening.  Thank you, Gary!

Gary says:

The Out 4 Blood concert here at the Echoplex on Friday Night was a Blast! Great sets by John Doe, CC Adcock, Jace Everett, Chuck Prophet and The Pillbilly Knights with The Morning After Pills.

Many of the actors from Bon Temps were there. Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Chris Bauer, Michelle Forbes, and Tara Buck. They all joined in the fun and hit the stage to introduce the bands.

There were a few bad vamps in the audience who tried to start some trouble, but they ended up retracting their fangs, drank some True Blood and rocked the night away.

Jace Everett interview with the BBC Cornwall

Posted by Lynnpd On December - 10 - 2009

jace-everett-240Jace Everett, the writer of the True Blood theme song is currently touring in the UK and on Monday December 7, he was interviewed by the BBC in Cornwall. In the audio interview Jace talked about how Bad Things became the theme song of True Blood, his record company and what he’s doing right now.

Here are some tidbits from the interview:

Indiana-born and Texas-raised Everett’s upbringing in the evangelical church, and his far-flung travels have had a major influence on his music.

He explained: “The church is where I learned about music, played bass and did my first real public singing, and where the girls thought I was really cool.

“I’ve always been attracted to emotionally and spiritually mature themes – philosophically and musically. I was a father at 23, I’ve been in every job in the world; I’ve been a preacher, a travelling musician, truck driver. I had adult responsibilities early in life, so I wasn’t attracted to ‘let’s party’ music.”

Jace continues: “I love the way Willie Nelson never sings on the beat. And Ray Charles can do something with a note, just one: there’s so much pain and love and sexuality. I took something from everyone I liked.

“I love Willie and Waylon; late-model Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Roger Miller, for their directness of lyric, and the common-day things and people in their songs.”

Jace Everett – An overnight success?

Posted by Lynnpd On November - 14 - 2009

Here’s some cool Jace Everett videos that, although not new, I just found.  As we all know, Jace wrote the title song for True Blood, Bad Things and it really has changed his life, but I’m not sure that it was “overnight”.

In the first video, he discusses how he became an “overnight success”.  Its all done tongue in cheek, really quite clever and worth a viewing.

Below is a video where Jace is performing “Bad Things”.  Somehow, we neglected to ever post this video on the Vault before, so I am now correcting that oversight, because its really good.

Here’s a fan made video of the same wonderful Jace hit with a very different visual effect, but of course, it includes vampires.

Jace reports that he will be in the UK playing at The Loft in Maidstone Monday night, November 16, Monto Water Rats Theatre in London Tuesday night, November 17 and will be doing BBC stuff in between. Go to www.jaceeverett.com for the details and to learn about future scheduled performances.

Jace Everett rocks Fangtasia

Posted by Shadaliza On November - 4 - 2009

People who craved post-Halloween music watched Jace Everett perform at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach.
jace-everettMore than 100 people came to watch Everett perform Sunday night at Alex’s Bar, also known as Fangtasia, it is a punk rock/dive bar and is definitely not where just-turned-21 youngsters will be found. It is a great bar where people can go to drink a good beer or cocktail and listen to live music. It has an original autographed portrait of Johnny Cash and a portrait of the king of rock and roll, Elvis.

Everett’s performance in the bar, filled with fans dressed up as “True Blood” characters, felt like an alternative world where vampires hung out.
“It was good timing,” said June Bonakdar, a fan of the show. “I am a big fan and we have wanted to come to Fangtasia for a while.”
Everett’s music has an irresistible charm that will make people want to sway or tap their feet to the music. Some of Everett’s influences include Willie Nelson, Tom Waits and Chuck Prophet. Along with a much older 50’s style of clothing, his wardrobe represented the style of the artists he admired. He wore jeans with the cuffs at the bottom, black biker boots, and a collared short sleeve shirt with a black undershirt.

Everett performed 11 songs off his new album, “Red Revelations.” The performance was very guitar-driven, adding a country-folk feel to the performance. It was southern rock, with a slight rockabilly sound. Everett sang the lyrics with his sultry voice. His acoustic guitar made people tap their feet to the beat. His partner, Dan Cohen, played along on the electric guitar, ripping guitar riffs up and down the guitar’s neck. This made all the women in the room move toward the front, and dance and sway to the music.

Everett performed his next single, “The Good Life.” He described it as a sardonic take on the good life we think we live when in reality we lead ourselves to a path of destruction. This song is one of the best on his album, because the acoustic guitar sound and his voice add extra darkness to his lyrics.

Everyone really wanted to hear him perform “Bad Things,” the theme song to “True Blood.” Everett reminded the crowd to stick around for the rest of the concert.
“I promise you will hear the song you want to hear, but God dammit you got to wait,” Everett told the crowd. “There are 11 more songs I want you to hear.”

“Bad Things” is a murky, dirty ballad about a guy who wants to do nasty things with a girl. His deep voice adds sexiness to the lyrics that will make you feel naughty.
As soon as Everett played the song, the crowd went wild. Once the song was over, however, the crowd dispersed. The music was good but the audience should have stuck around to listen to the rest of the set.
Fans of Everett, such as Riannon Blair, still loved the performance.“It was a lot better that I expected,” Blair said. “The guys are a lot more humble that I expected them to be. I was pleasantly surprised.”

In the spring of 2010, Everett plans on doing a full band tour in the U.K. and the U.S.

“In the U.K. the album is doing very well. It is in the top 100, considering it is my own independent label,” Everett said, referring to his label Weston Boys based in Austin, Texas.

“I hope they leave with knowing Jace Everett other than ‘True Blood’,” Everett said.

And I hope so too. “Red Revelations” has a lot more to offer than the popular song “Bad Things”. If you are unfamiliar with the rest of Jace’s work, take a leap and check it out.

Jave Everett’s Californian Tour brings him to Fangtasia

Posted by Shadaliza On October - 14 - 2009

Jace Everett is coming to California. After a successful performance in New York with his partner in crime Dan Cohen, the “acousto-lectric” duo is now heading west for a 17 day tour of the West Coast from late October through early November.

JaceEverett2Jace explains to The Vault what “acousto-lectric” means: “The acousto-lectric format is in fact myself on acoustic and Dan Cohen on electric [guitar]. The shows we are doing now, are all duo shows, as the band is just too expensive to take out for now. In 2010, there will be a lot of full band shows. But for right now I’m just laying the groundwork for world domination! I think folks will be surprised how rocking it can be. We did some shows in New York recently with this format and it really went over well.”

True Blood was the unexpected opportunity that came knocking on Jace’s door, “Bad Things” became enormously popular with the fans and enabled the Nashville based singer-songwriter to release a new album earlier this year entitled ‘Red Revelations‘. ‘Red Revelations’ has been on my Ipod ever since I bought the album and especially the True Blood inspired songs ‘Burn For You’ and ‘Damned If I Do’ are two of my favorites.

Because of Jace’s connection with True Blood, the November 1st gig in Alex’s Bar in Long Beach will have a special meaning to him. Alex’s Bar is of course the set for all the Fangtasia scenes in our favorite vampire show. Jace is looking forward to it, but will be watching over his shoulder….. “It should be fun for sure, but if anybody invites me to the basement though, I’m outta there!!”

After the Californian tour Jace has two London dates scheduled. ‘I’ll be doing two shows in London this November 16th and 17th. The 16th at the Hammersmith Apollo where I’ll open for Pink Martini. The 17th will be at Monto Water Rats.’ So British True Blood fans … if you want to hear ‘Bad Things’ live, get your tickets now at TicketWeb.co.uk.

Next year Jace would like to do some more show in Europe: ‘As possible I will definitely bring a full European tour in 2010.’
