True Blood Season 5 Fashion talk with costume designer Audrey Fisher

Posted by Shadaliza On September - 17 - 2012

Together with True Blood’s costume designer Audrey Fisher (@AudreyFish) we look back at some of the most remarkable costumes of season 5. What did the actors wear, who did they wear and why did they wear it?

Special thanks to Audrey Fisher for offering an insider look at the True Blood costumes and to Lisa for selecting the fashion picks.

From episode 5.07 and 5.08

Arlene the beautiful bride

Because Arlene had to be hugely pregnant on her wedding day, I needed to find a gown that would accommodate a big belly. I decided Arlene would go for a frothy romantic 70s look…and the popular empire waistline of that era that would help with the belly. We found this gown at a vintage shop, and because of the padded bra and belly, the alterations were minimal..and Arlene looked perfectly divine! – Audrey Fisher

Russell is back

I wanted to Russell to be back to his dangerous self, all cleaned up and ready to roll. So I chose a gorgeous black satin jacket by Sand which has beautiful red embroidered blooms scattered on it…and so the oxblood shirt matched those embroidered flowers. It seemed like an appropriately theatrical look for his resurrection. – Audrey Fisher

Tara works the pole

This wonderful vinyl ensemble comes straight from Hollywood Boulevard. We tried on lots of options, but this one was the best for her movement; she needed her arms, torso and legs exposed so she could work the pole, and it’s amazing to see Rutina’s beautiful body showcased in this look. I went for traditional black vinyl to create a strong contrast with Lettie Mae, who basically looks like an Easter Egg in comparison. – Audrey Fisher

Pam the queen of Fangtasia

This was an 80′s flashback look…We went with that amazing lioness hair, and Donna Mills makeup, and she’s sporting a vintage black leather Cavalli dress. Working with Kristin Bauer van Straten is dreamy…effortless, fun and inspiring! She’s the consummate professional, a total joy. And easy on the eyes! – Audrey Fisher

1900s Bill

I didn’t have time to custom build this costume, so I relied on rental pieces that we drastically altered. We did make the collar however, and I think it looks great. Stephen Moyer wears clothes so well, and innately understands how to move in period garments to make them seem totally right. – Audrey Fisher

Sam in plaid

Sam Trammell looks so incredible in blue plaid Western shirts…they are, of course, his character’s signature costume piece, but happily also totally flattering to his eyes, hair and physique! This is by Salt Valley, a brand from Urban Outfitters that I love and use all the time on the show. He’s wearing his trademark Merlotte buckle and Levis. So this is a totally iconic look…and yes he does look totally hot. – Audrey Fisher

From episode 5.06

Swoosh polo Roman

Alan Ball scripted this outfit: Golf clothes. Hilarious! So I just went for Power Golf Attire…Nike. Of course. And Chris is such a hunk, it was a pleasure to encase him in this tight, bright blue golf polo; then of course Nike high-concept fashion golf-pants (charcoal with a white windowpane, very elegant), and the new-fangled Nike version of old school golf saddle shoes. – Audrey Fisher

Faery Claude and Claudette

All the faeries are wearing such wonderful eclectic outfits, a real pastiche of rentals, vintage finds, and clothes and accessories from shops large and small all over LA, and it was such fun to design these looks! Claude is in a hot pink vintage vest rented from one of our local costume houses, along with some vintage and contemporary jewelry, and also vintage blue men’s slacks. I found the wonderful skinny sequined scarf at some store downtown. I love how it sparkles in the light. Claudette is wearing an adorable little red and hot pink striped Moroccan vest that was rented as well; a pink rose cocktail hat with luscious bought at a vintage shop; a mix of vintage and contemporary jewels; a sexy black bra; adorable little black satin tap pants with a little rose pattern from Jonquil; and of course sexy thigh high fishnets, high strappy heels and little mits! – Audrey Fisher

Salome in black

This is a stunning dress from Black Halo. Salome is always aware of her sexual power, so even this black dress has an incredibly seductive silhouette, and emphasizes all of Salome’s assets. I chose black because I felt Salome was showing deference and respect to Roman, who seems to be her lord and master…but dark plans are unfolding…and Salome is deeply religious, but also very political, vampire. – Audrey Fisher

Finally, we get Andy and Brian’s recap of the finale Episode of True Blood Season 5. Some say the world will end in fire, others in ice. If this season’s Blood Work! finale is any indication, both might be a little bit right – because the signature cocktail of The Rapture is officially CAJUN MARGARITAS.

Brian and Andy from CampBlood.org deliver a jalapeno-laced critical wrap-up of The Authoritaay’s swan song, multiple fairy births, hot ghost dads, and of course the 300 pound bloody merkin in the room: Bilith. Plus, the winners of this year’s giveaway! (Yes, that’s a plural.) Enjoy!

True Blood Season 5 Random Thoughts

Posted by Lynnpd On September - 10 - 2012

True Blood’s Season 5 can certainly be categorized as a “wild ride,” but it also can be described as a transition from the True Blood we knew to a possible resurrected True Blood. Even if Season 6 ends up being it’s last, it has turned a corner so large, that I’m not sure it can ever return.

I personally was in utter shock, just like everybody else, at the last scene of the season. But there were other big shockers and big changes before that. There were so many changes and departures from what we fans have known and loved about True Blood throughout the past seasons, that we here at the Vault are still trying to comprehend everything and that’s why it took so long before I could write this review of the season.

Despite that, even though I am still a bit in shock and awe over Season 5, I’m going to make an attempt to wrap my thoughts around it. However, because of this, some of my reflections may seem a bit disjointed, as was much of Season 5, in my opinion. So, below are my truly Random Thoughts about the entire fifth season.

From episode 1 to the last, we saw vampires born and vampires die,uh, lots of dying, and I don’t think I’d get much argument if I said that this season may be able to claim the title of “bloodiest True Blood season” on record.

Vampires Made

We saw new vampires be born and we saw them die. Those made were often a surprise to us, such as Steve Newlin, Tara Thornton and even Mike Spencer, who sadly lost his life early in the season when he attacked Sookie and she killed him with a chopstick.

Early in the first episode we learn that Steve Newlin has also been turned. We don’t know who turned him, but he sure has been turned, and in more ways than one, which we find out later as he sneaks in on Jason telling him that he is now not only one of the undead, but also gay.

Unlike Tara, Steve Newlin was immediately happy to be a vampire especially since he was also chosen to represent the AVL as a replacement for his one time nemesis, Nan Flannigan who met the true death in Season 4. And, although he started out the season with a real crush on Jason, that soon seemed to fade when he and Russell hooked up later in the season.  It will be interesting to find out whether Steve’s interest in Jason will resume now that his newest lover is no more. We don’t learn in Season 5 who Steve’s maker is, but it was definitely a woman, who immediately abandoned him.  I personally think it was Salome of the Authority, since she had reason to need a spokesman.

From what we first see of her treatment of Tara, Pam starts to be a terrible maker. This is interesting since she probably has the strongest maker/progeny relationship with her own maker, Eric. It’s great that the writer’s gave us Pam’s back story so we could learn about the beginnings of Pam and Eric’s relationship. Eric too wasn’t ready to be a maker, but it worked out well for both. However, in Season 5 we see Eric free Pam, even with her protestations against it, so I wonder how this will change their relationship in the next season?

Tara’s new life as vampire was not one she welcomed, but she quickly adapted when taken under Pam’s wing at Fangtasia. She is still angry with Sookie and Lafayette for them having Pam turn her, but she soon bonded so much with Pam that at the end of the season we see her and Pam kiss and embrace when Pam is freed from the Authority.

Why Didn’t Sookie & Alcide “Do It” in Season 5?

Posted by Lynnpd On September - 6 - 2012

Early in Season 5, it sure looked like Sookie and Alcide would “get it on,” however just as we thought we would get to see the much talked about scene between the two, it didn’t happen.  Not only was Sookie not able to continue as she had a slight accident because of all the drinking she did that night, but Eric and Bill made an appearance just as at that moment.

Now, TVLine has asked Alan Ball about it and here’s what he said:

“The decision to not do it this season [came about because] every single season, it’s been all about Sookie falling in love with this person or that person,” exiting showrunner Alan Ball tells TVLine. “It seemed like she had enough on her plate this season to not just [say], ‘Okay, now Sookie’s gonna fall in love with Alcide!’”

So that’s… it? The wolfman covers up his ex-girlfriend’s murder for her, she pukes on him, and that’s… it?

“No, no, no, Ball is quick to reassure.  That doesn’t mean that that door is closed,” he insists. Or at least it isn’t locked. “All of these supernatural guys in town carry a big torch for Sookie – even Eric, who doesn’t want to admit it.”

True Blood Season 5 Fashion talk with costume designer Audrey Fisher

Together with True Blood’s costume designer Audrey Fisher (@AudreyFish) we look back at some of the most remarkable costumes of season 5. What did the actors wear, who did they wear and why did they wear it?

Special thanks to Audrey Fisher for offering an insider look at the True Blood costumes and to Lisa for selecting the fashion picks.

From episode 5.05

Bartender Tara – strapless beaded corset

I started from the basic backstory that Pam is dressing Tara from out of her amazing closet. And maybe she pulled out a few choices and then let Tara pick; she didn’t let Tara just run amuck in there! Tara’s favorite color is purple, and she’s been stuck in this bloody coral tank, denim shirt and jeans for days..so she went for something sexy, flashy and vampy! We made this in house, piecing together 2 different corsets, because I really wanted that specific length and line. And we had to make one for Rutina’s stuntwoman too, of course! I think she looks fierce, and I really wanted a jaw-dropping costume for this first moment of Baby Vampness. – Audrey Fisher

Salome – Deep Blue/Purple fitted dress, plunging neckline

I wanted to use very rich jewel tones on Salome, to hearken back to her royal history, and also because Valentina looked so lovely in those tones. This curvy, feminine dress, which has a 1940s meets 1980s vibe, fit her like a glove, and the pop of color was perfect in the muted world of the AHQ; she looks powerful, seductive, perfect. Like a smart, luscious trophy wife with a will of steel and an agenda. This is a French Connection dress, which is inspired by a Black Halo dress; Black Halo is in turn inspired (I think) by the amazing couture designer Roland Mouret. – Audrey Fisher

Jessica – Cheetah print pants, t-shirt and fitted jacket

I wanted Jessica to really play with sassy hot vampy looks this season, so this is her Rocker Look. Also I needed to give her (and her stuntwoman) coverage for the very aggressive fight that she gets into with Tara. I went with a brown leather jacket from Zara; Tara was in black leather and so I went softer for Jess. The T. Rex rocker tee is from Urban Outfitters. And the amazing leopard print jeans are from Robin’s Jeans…they fit her perfectly and have a lot of stretch for all that action. And then of course she wore some hot pink suede high-heeled booties, cuz Jess is such a girly girl at heart. And it’s fun to have a girl fight in heels. – Audrey Fisher

From episode 5.03

Salome the seductress dressed in black lace

“I designed this dress, and it was built by our seamstresses. It is a black lace embellished with bugle beads, with long sleeves and a full train. Salome is wearing a black silk corset and slip underneath…I thought it looked stunning against the industrial set.” – Audrey Fisher

Jessica looking peachy

“This dress is Bebe. The script descibed a “band aid of a dress,” so I went with this fleshy peach color, and tried to find the tiniest dress I could. I think the color and the style both work to make Jessica seem sweet, sexy and vulnerable when she becomes unhinged by the delicious fairy smell of Claude.” – Audrey Fisher

True Blood season six: What’s in store for Bill Compton?

Posted by AphroditeMF On August - 31 - 2012

Season five of True Blood has concluded with its most jaw-dropping cliffhanger ever.  While many fans were greatly distressed by Bill Compton’s explosive death and resurrection in the finale, I was enthralled by this turn of events.  Bill is going to be smack-bang at the centre of next season’s storyline, and is the subject of intense speculation and attention right now.  Also, this will be an excellent plot to showcase Stephen Moyer’s versatility as an actor, and represents a huge game-changer for the show.

Here are my thoughts on Bill Compton version 2.0…

Bill Compton True Blood

Nature

Bill is not simply Lilith in Bill’s skin – he is still himself, with his own memories and experiences.  This has been confirmed already by Alan Ball.  So this is not, as some fans have been saying, a rip-off of the Locke/Man in Black storyline from Lost (massive Lost spoiler: Locke died, and the evil spirit of The Man in Black took on his form).  The fact that Sookie and Eric both saw him implies that he is a physical being, not a spirit entity as Lilith was.  I doubt that Lilith is going to be inhabiting his body and occasionally taking controlling him, since they’ve done the spirit possession thing to death with Lafayette.  It’s possible that Bill will continue to have visions of Lilith, but my feeling is that we’ve seen the last of her and her epic ladygarden.  Lilith’s quest was to find a host, and now that she has accomplished that, her powers have become manifested in Bill.  My feeling is that Bill will still have free-will, and will have control over his own actions, for better or for worse.

Since he has been “reborn”, then it is plausible that he will suffer from the same uncontrollable urges as a newly made vampire does, and will be wild and impulsive.  Throughout season five, he became increasingly psychotic, as a result of ingesting Lilith’s blood and being brainwashed by the Sanguinista cult, to the extent that he lost all the love and empathy that he’d once had, even towards Jessica and Sookie.  Now that he is reborn, whether or not he remains a completely cold-blooded psychopath remains to be seen.

A lot of fans have been asking if Bill will be naked, covered in blood, and emitting a horrendous primal scream noise all season.  Somehow, as much as I would like to see an entire season of Naked Bill, I doubt that he’s going to remain in the state we saw him in immediately following his resurrection.  To have him being an entirely feral would be a waste of Stephen Moyer’s acting skills, so I think that he will be lucid, just more vicious than he once was.

Bill Compton True BloodPowers

Obviously he has become supercharged in some way – so will he have some previously unseen superpowers?  What will he be capable of?  Superior strength and speed to all vampires is a given, as is extremely potent blood, and very possibly the ability to enthrall vampires who drink his blood.  Probably he’ll acquire the ability to fly, and maybe some advanced glamouring technique.  Maybe he will be able to glamour a mass audience via television?  Or glamour other vampires and supernatural beings?  The writers’ imaginations pose the only limit to what Bill might now be capable of.  Perhaps he’s immune to staking, and can daywalk?  He might even have some crazy sci-fi abilities such as pyrokinesis, telekinesis, teleportation, shape-shifting, telepathic projection, time travel, prescience, resurrection of the dead… you name it!

A feeling I have is that Bill will see Lorena, in the same way that Eric and Nora saw Godric.  And if Bill sees Lorena egging him on to be evil, maybe it will make him think twice.

Motivations

Now that Bill is some sort of vampire demigod, what sort of shenanigans is he going to get up to?  The Sanguinistas were keen to bolster their numbers by turning new vampires, so perhaps Bill will get some new progenies?  Will he set out to gain new followers, presenting himself as the new vampire messiah, or embark on a lone mission of anarchy?  Maybe Steve Newlin and Nigel the baby eater could be his first disciples?  Bill was an adept politician, so perhaps he will continue to try to manipulate the media, while covertly carrying out his dastardly deeds.

On the other hand, since he had a brief realization in between downing the blood, and meeting the true death, perhaps the reborn Bill will question his new role and will resist the prophecy within the Vampire Bible.

What I’m really wondering is whether Bill could be the Antichrist.  It’s been mentioned in the show that “end days” are coming, and Salome spoke of Lilith’s return heralding The Rapture.  What if events are spiralling towards a cataclysmic event, and Bill is the harbinger of evil?  If that is the case, then another being would have to be the second coming of Christ.  Sookie, perhaps?  Or is this all a bit too much like Lost/Carnivale/The Stand?!

Bill Compton True BloodThe Long Game

My feeling is that, while Bill will initially appear to be inherently evil, slowly he will come to his senses.  He’s fought long and hard for his humanity in the past, after all.  I know that many fans feel that Bill’s role next season is to eventually defeat Warlow, and I am in agreement.  They’ve already done the “Bill and Eric outwit an ancient vampire” thing with Russell, but now Bill has been empowered it will be interesting to see a face-off between two ultra-powerful undead beings.

I think that the fairies will have an important role to play in Bill’s eventual fate.  There is way more to the vampire/fairy mythology than we have seen so far in the show.  My feeling is that their origins are somehow entwined.  It was significant that Salome was so appalled by fairies, and said that Lilith regards them as an abomination.  And let’s not forget – Bill now has four half-fairy great-great-great-great-great granddaughters.  Bill has to eventually be revealed as Andy and Terry’s ancestor, and I think the existence of his living human bloodline will come into play.

I feel that the end-game in True Blood is for Bill to turn human
.  One reason for this is that Russell implied in season three that the fairies have the ability to resurrect dead vampires.  So maybe season six could end with Bill being killed again (perhaps by suicide), and then being resurrected again by Sookie, but this time as a human.  Wouldn’t that be the ultimate irony?  The only way he can have a future with Sookie is to become human, but by becoming human he ruins his chances with her, because then she’d be able to read his mind.  And how terrible would it be for him to be gifted these infinite god-powers only to have them removed, and to have to learn to live as an ordinary mortal?  However, it’s been revealed that Sookie’s powers are finite – she and Bill could end up living as an ordinary human couple after all.  I still think that their conversation in season three, where they dreamed of a life together where neither was a supernatural being, was somehow prophetic.

Whatever direction the writers choose to take Bill’s character, it’s sure to be a mind-bending journey that his character will embark on!
