Something we enjoy to do each week is to pull out the True Blood quotes that we think are the best from each episode. The criteria for a quote to make our list is that the it must stand on it’s own when taken out of context.

In the finale episode, “Save Yourself” Bill’s transformation was THE huge shocker.  Jason and Pam had their typical great one liners, but Bill’s final speech was my favorite quote from this episode. Even though very misguided, it was a great speech given just before he drank Lilith’s blood.

Bill: I have spent my entire life as a vampire apologizing, believing I was inherently wrong somehow, living in fear. Fear that God had foresaken me, that I was damned, but Lilith grants us freedom from fear. ~Vicissitudes 9:24 “Fear not, for my blood is beyond fear – fear of sin, fear of mankind, fear of retribution. For thou art begat by God, and this world is but a spring to slake thy sacred thirst.”

Here are the other memorable quotations from this episode:

Eric: Well, that felt even better than I thought it would.

Jason and Eric: Fanger, bloodbag, leach, breather, dead fuck, meat sack.

Nora: You smell like something I once dreamed of.

Jason: If I want to be a fool, I will be a fool; that is my God give right as an American.

Pam: One of the worst things about being immortal is having to watch this same stupid scenario happen over and over, it’s usually the humans though. Guess this proves we’re just as fucking retarded as they are.

Pam: Must all roads lead to fucking Sookie?

Alcide’s Dad: Worst part about being a parent, no matter how hard you try, you can’t keep your kids from learning what a shit hole this world is.

Alcide: The words are great, deeds are better.

Jason: Before things what, spin outta control?  That train has already sailed.

Jason: The time for tolerance is over.

Maurella: My light broke.

Bill: My beautiful prophet.

Jason: Maybe we’d be better off going through life without thinkin’ something good’s waiting for us down the road, maybe we wouldn’t keep getting hurt if we just expected the worst.

Arlene: Who knew watching an alien give birth could be so comforting.

Lafayette: Are you kidding me it’s always the weird stuff that’s the best.

Holly: It’s a girl, with no umbilical chord.

Maurella to Andy: You sired them now it is your responsibility to see that at least half of them live until adulthood. I honor what was, is and will never be.

Rosalyn: Compton and Salome are off buttering each other’s biscuits half the time. Ever since Roman cashed in his chips, the work ethic around here has just gone straight to hell.

Eric: See what you’ve been missing working for the fucking Authority?

Salome: This is not a movement Bill, this is the fucking rapture. All you’ve seen and you still doubt; that is why I am stronger.

Bill: Of course it was a competition, but the weak spot for you, Salome, and it’s always has been, is that you’re not very good at predicting an adversaries behavior. Possibly because of your monumental narcissism.

Bill: I would never desecrate the holy grail.

Salome: Lilith chose wisely.

Eric: She’s a mad God Bill, she is nothing but destruction, don’t do it.

Sookie: Bill this isn’t you?

Bill: What the fuck do you know about me. For all you know everything I did with you was an act, calculated to get a particular response.

Sookie: You’re stronger than this, you are capable to sympathy and kindness and generosity. You are unique among all the vampires I’ve met. Don’t throw that away.

Bill: I have spent my entire life as a vampire apologizing, believing I was inherently wrong somehow, living in fear. Fear that God had forsaken me, that I was damned, but Lilith grants us freedom from fear ~Vicissitudes 9:24, “Fear not, for my blood is beyond fear – fear of sin, fear of mankind, fear of retribution. For thou art begat by God, and this world is but a spring to slake thy sacred thirst.”

Bill: I told you the first night we met, vampires often turn on those they love the most.

Music for True Blood Season 5, Episode 12 ‘Save Yourself’

Posted by Lynnpd On August - 28 - 2012

Be sure to check out the section in our True Blood Episode Guide devoted to the music for each episode of Season 5. To see it, go to the Season 5 Episode Guide: Music. This guide is updated weekly with the songs featured in each episode after it airs.

Below are the songs from the finale episode, “Save Yourself,” which aired last Sunday, August 26, 2012.  This season we certainly have had a great a variety of music in each episode and we congratulate Gary C. and all the writers who chose each song.

There are several songs with that title: blues-rocker Jonny Lang, Americana singer-songwriter James McMurtry, indie rocker Sharon Van Etten, thrash metal legends Overkill, guitar-god Michael Schenker and noted True Blood fan Snoop Dogg all have songs by that name.

So it was something of a surprise when the song turned out to be by ’90s industrial rockers Stabbing Westward. Many of the musical decisions on the show go to Music Supervisor Gary Calamar, but that wasn’t the case with this selection. “That one was picked by Alan Ball and he was very happy with it, so I left it alone,” Calamar tells CBS Local.

Yea, we guessed correctly this week on the music speculation for this episode with our choice of the song, and of artist.  I am loving this song and think it really fit well with the episode.

Random Thoughts True Blood Episode 5.12 ‘Save Yourself’

Posted by Kelly Valentine On August - 27 - 2012

I have to say my mind is completely blown after watching this week’s finale of True Blood Season 5. Up until Bill drank Lilith’s blood I was still holding out hope that he could be saved. Things have gotten pretty bad when you make Eric look like the good guy. Team Bill must be in disbelief. How will all of this play out? I don’t know how I am going to survive until next season.

Eric to the Rescue
Bye-Bye Russell. You were a great villain but I’m glad to see you go. Eric and Nora reenter the Authority with Sookie, Jason and Tara as their prisoners. I loved the look on Bill’s face when he saw Sookie in the back of the truck. He knows Eric is up to no good. Once inside Eric and Nora leave the others in search of the Authority members, killing everyone in their path. While trying to disarm the system Nora isn’t afraid to put Eric in his place, sibling rivalry at its best. With the system down Sookie and Tara can now free Pam and Jessica from their cells. After loading everyone on the elevator Sookie and Eric search for Bill. They burst in the room before Bill can drink Lilith’s blood. Eric warns him that Lilith is a mad god. Sookie tries her best to reason with Bill. It’s no use, he’s too far gone. They watch in horror as Bill drinks the blood, explodes and transforms into a blood version of himself. Eric chooses to run instead of face him. Bill isn’t the only one who’s changed. Eric is very different this episode. Although Eric can still be ruthless his softer side is starting to really show. Eric’s love for Sookie and his vampire family is endearing. Where has the Viking warrior in him gone?

Fly on the wall
Sam is brought upstairs by the guards. Bill is less than thrilled to see him. Before they can kill him, Sam shifts into a fly escaping into the air ducts. While flying around head quarters he sees Steve’s clothes and badge. Sam returns to the cell where Luna is being held. He tells her about his plan. Luna shifts into a fly and makes her way to Steve’s bedroom. Once inside she skin walks as the reverend and takes Emma from her cage. Before she can leave the Authority Luna/Steve is stopped by Roselyn. She wants Steve to do an interview and explain the video that was released of him and Russell at the frat house. Luna is clearly nervous and stumbles over her words. During the live interview she shifts from Steve to herself. Roselyn comes after her. Sam, who has shifted into a fly, flies into her mouth. He then shifts back to himself ripping her apart.

Bill’s on a major power trip
Bill’s new role in the Authority has gone to his head. He begins barking orders at the guards like they are beneath him, to find Sam after he shifted into a fly. When Salome confronts Bill about Kibwe’s whereabouts he admits to killing him. He tells Salome Lilith came to him and said that she was chosen, which was a lie. Salome prepares for the rapture by drinking all of Lilith’s blood. Bill sits by watching her reaction, stake in hand. He tells Salome that he added silver to the blood. Well played Bill, well played. He stakes Salome and prepares to drink the real blood of Lilith when Sookie and Eric come in. Sookie tries to reason with him and he calls her an abomination. Bill warns her, as he did when they first met, that vampires often turn on the ones they love the most. He drinks the blood and explodes. Eric consoles a very upset Sookie. The puddle that once was Bill began to move. They are shocked and terrified when Bill appears out of the blood. Is Bill now the vampire god?

Sookie teams up with vampires again.
Seems just like old times. Sookie’s back to sticking her nose in vampire business. It didn’t take much arm twisting from Eric; all he had to do was play the Bill card. Once inside the Authority Sookie and Tara search for Pam and Jessica. They find them locked in cells. After Nora and Eric disarm the system Tara bravely opens the silver door freeing Pam. Tara proves Jessica right when she pulls Pam into an intense kiss. Sookie and Eric load Jason, Jessica, Tara, Pam and Nora into the elevator then go look for Bill. Sookie tries to plead with Bill calling upon the love he once had for her. He calls her an abomination then drinks Lilith’s blood. Seeing Bill explode, Sookie is distraught. When the pool of blood regenerates into a bloody form of Bill her sadness turns to fear. Will she ever learn her lesson?

Jason’s on a war path
When Sookie agrees to help Eric, Jason’s father tells him to go with her and kills the vampires. On the way to the Authority Jason makes a pit stop to load up on vampire killing weapons. He tells Sookie he’ll kill Bill and any other vampire that stands in his way. The visions of his parents are fueling Jason’s vampire hate. Once inside Jason wastes no time killing vampires. Jessica is so glad to see him. She declares her love for Jason. He tells her he can never be with a vampire. She is crushed. Losing his best friend after betraying his trust and finding out the truth of his parent’s death has really affected Jason. He has lost his sweet, lovable side.

True Blood’s Jessica and Pam discuss hormones and more

True Blood’s Jessica and Pam are held hostage at the Authority Headquarters and Jessica starts to film herself with her phone. She talks about Bill and she and Pam start to talk philosophically about life and love, etc.

Stephen Moyer spoke with TVLine about the transformation Bill went through in the shocking True Blood finale. Read part 1 of 2 of the Q&A.

TVLINE | As billed, the finale featured a lot of blood.

We didn’t skimp on the death. [Laughs] During the table read for the episode, we were all going, “Oh my f—ing God!” It was like every five seconds somebody exploded. And I know what that means to shoot an episode that has that many deaths in it. Every single time you have to replace the body with a bag of blood, which we call a ‘Goo Drop.’ The ‘Good Drop’ is something like 20 to 30 gallons of blood being smashed down on the floor. And they came up with an even better way of doing it where they jettison 15 gallons of blood into the air as 16 gallons of blood falls down onto that blood, so you get this splatter effect that goes out wide. But that takes the best part of two or three hours per hit. So when we all read that episode, we were going, “Okay, three hours, six hours, nine hours… that’s a day, that’s another day.”

TVLINE | How long did it take to shoot the episode?

It was three very intense weeks. We’re very lucky on our show because we get to shoot like 20, 25-day episodes, which I don’t think anybody else on television gets to do

TVLINE | Let’s talk about the final scene — what was the makeup process like?

It’s a long process, but ultimately not something we haven’t done before. Sitting in a chair having your body painted is something I’ve done quite a few times on the show. You spend three or four hours in the chair and then you come out looking like somebody else. One of the most interesting parts of the shot was actually during the transformation before the final moment. There’s a lot of tiny little tubes that you have all over your body and then they pump blood through the tubes, and that’s the cross moment where Bill as we know him [turns] into what he becomes. And that was amazing. RELATED | True Blood Season Finale Recap: Takes From the Dark Side

TVLINE | What does he become? And is Bill really dead?

I don’t think so. Certainly, when I read it I went through a moment of, “Oh my f—ing God – Jesus!” And certainly a couple of people — Alex [Skarsgard] being one of them — called me going, “Have you read it yet?!” It’s pretty out there… One of the things I wanted to do was show fear in Bill’s eyes. Show that he’s absolutely clear that what he’s doing is the right thing until it starts to happen, and then we see the vulnerability in him of, “F–k, what have I done?” And that was something I hope comes across. We [wanted] to freakin’ terrify the audience.

TVLINE | This obviously sets Bill up to be an even bigger villain next season.

I think you’re right. I haven’t seen anything for next season so I have no idea, but yes. [Laughs] I think it would be safe to assume that what we thought was Bill is no longer Bill.

TVLINE | So it’s within the realm of possibility that he could do to Sookie what he did to Jessica — only worse. How do you feel about that?

If that’s dramatically compelling and fun and great to watch, then so be it. That’s awesome.

TVLINE | With that cliffhanger, Alan Ball is setting up a killer Season 6 for you — but now he’s leaving the show. Any concern there?

We had some inkling [he was planning to leave] around Season 4. We weren’t even sure he was going to do Season 5, so we were very excited to have him for another season. But we did know this was coming. He’s just extraordinary. He’s this wonderful, complex, funny puppet master; we all adore him. Do we want to see him go? No way. But Mark Hudis, who is taking over, is an excellent writer. He came in during Season 4. He understands the characters, he has great wit. I had the great pleasure of directing his episode this season — Episode 8 — so I worked very closely with him. He has a fantastic take on what our show is. And Alan would’ve never given his baby over to someone he didn’t trust.

Post Mortem of True Blood Season 5 with Alan Ball

Posted by Lynnpd On August - 26 - 2012

This final episode of True Blood was written by none other than Alan Ball and is his last episode as showrunner. Alan spoke to TVLine about the season and also provided a sneak peek at Season 6!

TVLINE | So, is Bill God now?
I don’t want to say if he is or he isn’t. Who’s to say what Lilith really is? He is still Bill but he is something different.

TVLINE | So there is some of the old Bill in there?
It is Bill, but it is a transformed Bill. He is not a completely new person. It’s not like his memories or his experiences have been left out and he’s just a baby.

TVLINE | Can he revert back to the old Bill?
Well, that’s the question: Is he going to be evil? What does he want? What is he going to do? Will he be able to revert back to Bill? That’s for future seasons. The implication, certainly, is that he is more ferocious.

TVLINE | As you warned me back at Comic-Con, there was a lot of death in the episode — some more ambiguous than others. Did Luna die?
You’ll have to watch [next season]. We didn’t see her die.

TVLINE | And Russell? Is he really dead?
He’s gone. We may see him in flashbacks, but he bit it.

TVLINE | Also back at Comic-Con, you declined to tell me which couple you were having the most fun writing for this season because it would be too much of a spoiler. Can you now confirm it was Russell and Steve?
Yes. I love both of those actors and I thought they were hilarious and kind of touching.

TVLINE | Will Steve remain a viable character next season?
I don’t know. I’ve spoken to Mark briefly. They’ve only pitched some very broad ideas. I hope he does because I think he’s such a great character. I don’t know if he would be a big part of the season, but he definitely seems like that would be a person to bring back.

TVLINE | You really outdid yourself with Rosalyn’s death scene. Congratulations.
I think that is probably the most jaw-dropping [death] that we’ve done. Every time I see it I laugh.

TVLINE | The Pam/Tara kiss – did you know at the start of the season that it was all leading up to this?
It was in our mind at the beginning of the season, yes. We wanted to really tease it out.

TVLINE | What was it about those two characters that made them relationship material in your mind?
They both were, if not full-on lesbians, than bisexual. They both were characters with real attitude. And they both hate each other — at least they did at the beginning of the season. And that, to me, felt like it could create a lot of tension that could turn romantic towards the end.

TVLINE | Where would you personally like to see that relationship go next season?
Well, here’s the thing with relationships on True Blood: Once they happen then you have to throw a monkey-wrench into them, because to have people be happy is not that exciting.

TVLINE | But it’s your understanding that Mark is committed to that story?
All of the writers were into [them], so that is my understanding, yes.

TVLINE | Did you ever consider introducing or unmasking Warlow in the finale?
No. We didn’t want to really define Warlow until the next season.

TVLINE | So he’ll definitely figure into Season 6?
I think he’ll be kind of a big part of it.

TVLINE | Is he someone we’ve met before?

TVLINE | With Bill heading into Big Bad territory next season, does that make Eric now the hero of True Blood?
Remains to be seen. They’ve both been heroes in their own way. Eric was kind of like a mischievous cad, but I don’t think he was ever, like, a true villain the way that Russell was or the way that Maryann was. And he’s done a lot of really heroic things himself. So I never really looked at Eric as the bad guy and Bill as the good guy – at least not since the very early seasons. But it remains to be seen what will go down with both of them.

TVLINE | A non-finale burning question — why did you write Hoyt out?
I felt like we had told his entire story. There weren’t many places we could go with him that we hadn’t been, but I love that character and I love Jim [Parrack] so much I didn’t want to kill him. He’s always been such a good soul. I wanted to have the possibility for him to return as well. But he fell in love and he couldn’t let go.

TVLINE | Did you feel like you had to write him out so viewers could more easily accept Jessica and Jason without feeling guilty?
That was not the thought, no. I thought the way that he left and the way that he made her glamour the memories out of him was pretty devastating. Also, there are so many characters on the show to serve. It felt like Hoyt had run his course for now, so we thought let’s send him off to Alaska and then if we need to bring him back as well.

TVLINE | The finale was your swan song — how are you feeling?
It’s bittersweet. It’s been such a big part of my life for so long; of course it’s hard to step away. But running that show is such a huge job and I’ve been doing it for five years straight. I just don’t think I have another season left in me. I need to re-charge. And then I’m interested in doing something new — something with different characters and a different tone. As a writer, it’s fun to create. And once you get into a long-running show with very established characters and a very established tone and format, after a while it’s a really great job but that’s what it is — a job. You’re just continuing to create the same show. I’m at the point in my life where I don’t want to work as hard. Actually, I’ve had to take a good hard look at workaholism and it’s effect on one’s mental health. [Laughs] And, also, there are things I want to do that are different. I want to try something completely different.

TVLINE | The show is in good hands with Mark?
Very good hands. And three other writers have been there since the very beginning… It’s like a having a kid go away to college.
