Friend Is A Four Letter Word…

Every True Blood episode is named after a song. The sixth episode of Season 2 is titled “Friend Is A Four Letter Word”.

“Friend is a Four Letter Word” is the name of the last single from the 1996 hit album “Fashion Nugget” by alternative rock band Cake from Sacramento, California.

CAKE – Friend is a Four Letter Word

to me, coming from you,
friend is a four letter word.
end is the only part of the word
that i heard.
call me morbid or absurd.
but to me, coming from you,
friend is a four letter word.

to me, coming from you,
friend is a four letter word.
end is the only part of the word
that I heard.
call me morbid or absurd.
but to me, coming from you,
friend is a four letter word.

when I go fishing for the words
i am wishing you would say to me,
i’m really only praying
that the words you’ll soon be saying
might betray the way you feel about me.

but to me, coming from you,
friend is a four letter word.

I found some information about the meaning of this song and if it is any indication of what will happen in this episode…. it doesn’t look good…

“This song is about a girl who breaks up with a guy by telling him they should be “Friends.” This is not what he wants to hear, and to his ears, and the resulting heartbreak makes him think of the word “Friend” as dirty and cruel – similar to many vulgar 4-letter words in the English language.”

Do the songs, and their titles, always refer to Sookie/Bill storyline? I suppose it could also refer to Jason and (whoever) and Tara and Eggs? Or Sam and his new girl. Or even Jessica and Hoyt? (wishful thinking)

Also, I think I read somewhere, in an older spoiler, that in season 2 Bill will learn how far Eric will go to get Sookie, perhaps he betrays Bill with some information, although I don’t know if Bill and Eric can be considered friends.

No, as much as I would like to deny it, I think the writer’s may be planning on a brief separation for our dynamic duo.

The titles, especially early on, were usually related to Bill and Sookie storylines – but they fit other storylines as well. And episodes like Sparks Fly Out and I Don’t Wanna Know used titles that were more about other storylines (Jason and Sam, respectively). If Bill and Sookie break up, I can’t imagine either Bill or Sookie using the “friend” line. They strike me as they type of couple that, if they break up, it’s going to be a humdinger of a fight and they’ll say they don’t ever want to speak to the other again. I could see Sookie giving Sam the friend speech if they were ever to be together and break up, but not with Bill at this point. Bill and Sookie were never really friends, IMO, though it could happen.

While the song could relate to Bill and Sookie, it could relate to another couple on the show, or not even a couple at all. I’m not familiar with the Cake song, but just by the name of it I figured this episode would have one friend betraying another in some way, not necessarily a romantic way.

Good food for thought, though! And if Bill and Sookie do break up – as I expect they will at least once in season two – it just means we’re that much closer to make-up sex. ;)

I think maybe it’s Sam and Tara. I agree with Lou that a breakup between Sookie and Bill would be so a real barnburner. Those two are so passionate, and I can’t see this “friends” deal between them. But if it is them, then I look at it this way. Imagine how much fun it will be to see them make up?

I guess it had to happen sometime in Season 2, but the idea of a lasting Bill and Sookie breakup still makes me quesy.

I think any Bill/Sookie break-up mid-season would be short-lived. We’d see them together again before the end of the season, I think. But then I could see a longer split happening at the end of season two and heading into season three (if there is one). It would kind of make sense since they were together at the end of season 1.

I do believe that if the shows producers stay true to the storyline of the books, we should be in for quite a wild ride. Eric forces Bill to reveal his original reason for coming home. That really pissed her off in the book, so we will just have to wait and see. But a permanent break ? Not With these ratings. Also maybe connection with Eric during the split, where Eric lets say, isn’t completely himself. But hearts are longing for Bill and Sookie !

Remember in the interview with Stephen when he tells TV Guide about he and Anna’s romance? She states that this interview is just after wrapping an intense scene where he and Sookie have a very fierce lover’s quarrel. Maybe this is it?

Good spec, ABN, but that interview was at least a few weeks ago and this episode doesn’t start filiming until next Friday. So either they argue earlier on and then break up, or this title has nothing to do with Bill and Sookie breaking up (I can go either way at this point).

I’ve noticed that sometimes only the title of the song has something to do with the episode, not the lyrics themselves. That opens up all sorts of possibilities!

It is my speculation that the argument referred to in the interview may have come about due to the maenad. Isn’t she somewhat responsible for the argument in the book? OR – it could come about when Sookie learns about the demise of Uncle Molester, which they have yet to deal with, and hopefully will!

I believe that the book has them separating at the end of the Dallas trip due to Bill’s vampiric nature and subsequent behavior – which Sookie is having a hard time accepting. Maybe that’s the argument. Luckily, this also leads to some hot make-up sex. Gotta have the argument if we want the make-up sex.

Oh..so sorry to jump in again, but I forgot to add…

As there appears to be a flashback with Bill and Lorena in this episode, I wonder if this song might also be about when they broke off and why.

But, it’s only Ep 6. I wonder if the Dallas trip is only gonna be 2 episodes long. I guess it has something to do with the Lorena flashback.

Btw, I have a creepy feeling that Bill won’t go vampiric meany on the fellowship rundown. I wonder if that would mean no bullet-sucking-yumness :(

Well, if this is going to lead to the make up scene after the football game in book 2. I’m all for a temporary breakup. The same goes for if it leads into the sherriff wearing pink spandex and acting in a very effeminate manner. Both will offer a Tton of entertainment value.

I actually don’t think the title has anything to do with Bill/Sookie. I don’t think Alan will break them up as early as episode 6

  14. I also think that a break-up between Sookie and Bill will occur after the Dallas trip. She’s so particular about abhorant behavior …running off and being all vampirey. So she’ll have a tantrum about it and they’ll be on the outs. My opinion of course, bolstered by what went on in the books. I’m torn as to whether or not I want them to split. There’s that chemistry thing (whatever!) but what about seeing Bill with someone else? What about some crazy behavior from our good mainstreaming vampire?

  15. Sanna says:

Aww, I don’t want to see Bill will someone else. I know Book-Bill was, but I actualy don’t think that’s TV-Bill’s style. Wasn’t Book-Bill with someone else just to get Sookie jelous?? I can’t see TV-Bill do that. It’s not highschool, lol. And if Alan really wants more people to be on the Bill/Sookie bandwagon, he can’t break them up, get them together again, break them up, get them together again all the time. He already did a little of that in season 1. I hope he doesn’t follow the books in that aspect and have thgem maybe argue at most, but dont break them up. It’s a bit repeative. Would like to see them together all season, but don’t make it a perfect relationship. Have them argue and stuff, sure have them stick together. People wil lose interest if he’s gonna break them up all the time
