Yesterday, HBO sent out some great photos of cast members appearing in True Blood Season 5. One of those photos was of Michael McMillian as Reverend Steve Newlin, but very surprisingly he was bearing vampire fangs.
You may remember that in one of the last scenes of Season 4, we saw Jason open his door to find Rev. Newlin waiting outside, who immediately clicked open his fangs. Now this new photo has been released from HBO with Michael sporting the pointy teeth.
When I saw the scene last summer, so many questions ran through my head and when I saw this photo yesterday, even more came to mind, such as:
- Are they real fangs or is he in a Halloween costume pretending? Remember, Jessica had just left Jason’s house wearing her Red Riding Hood costume.
- Or, is he a vampire? If so, who turned him? - I have to admit that I am having trouble wrapping my head around the fact that he might be a vampire.
- Is he recently turned or has he always been one and hidden it from us pretending to be human?
- Could he have been the one who released Russell Edgington from the cement and then was turned by him? Or was he turned by one of the new vampires or possibly even one of the vampire authority?
Learning the answer to these questions is only the tip of the iceberg of questions I have about the new season. However, the good news is we won’t have to wait too much longer before we find out all the answers since True Blood Season 5′s first episode will air on June 10, just a little over a month away.
Tell us what you think about Reverend Newlin by leaving a comment below, is he vampire or human?
And, it might be fun to also find Michael on Twitter and tell him what you think at: @McMillzz

I think he is human. I tweeted my speculation to Michael.

I honestly don’t know. A Halloween look would certainly be a strong possibility, since Season 4 ended on Halloween. But why would he be sporting them in Season 5, unless the above photo is from episode 1 and events pick up immediately where we left them in 4. I am assuming that’s the case and it is still Halloween.

I have a bad memory and I could be wrong but I remember hearing Michael in a podcast interview saying he will be a vampire. The Rev. in S2 could not have been a vampire because he was outside in daylight numerous times.
I’m speculating he was turned by Russell Edgington and he is the one who will have him freed from the cement.

I agree with you. Rev. Newlin had been off the radar for quite a while, I seem to recall, so it’s not hard to believe he was captured and turned.
Siring a vampire-hating, two-faced Reverend would be just up any vampire’s with a twisted sense of humour (and revenge) alley. I wouldn’t put it past Eric, for instance, we don’t know everything he was up to during the year Sookie was in Fairyland.
Russell Edgington is my favourite bet, however: I’m sure he’d find it hysterical to have Steve Newlin as a sort of pet. If he turned Steve before he was buried in cement, he could have called to him, make him glamour Alcide’s man, and dig him out.
It would also make sense why he went to Jason, it’s been mentioned he wants his help (I thought Michael said something along those lines, could be wrong) and Jason is well acquainted with powerful vampires, as is his sister. Perhaps he needs protection or regrets what his sire made him do?

Michael Micmillian already confirmed in an interview that he will be a vampire in S5. His fangs are “real” and not a Halloween prank.

All I know is that the scene with Jason and him in Season 4 was among the most hilarious on True Blood. Right up there with ‘Now time for the weather’

I’ve been thinking that maybe at some point, Russell Edgington could have turned Reverend Newlin. It would fit Russell’s sense of humor to turn someone who so publicly hated vamps. Then he could have called on the Rev to dig him out of the cement… the only thing that makes this scenario not make sense is, why would Russell have waited so long??

And here I thought it was a dream of Jason’s that Newlin was vampire.

I think he IS a vampire; in the trailer, he does that speed walk thing towards jason.

I’m hoping the Rev is a vampire – would be fun. Not sure who turned him.

Yep, Michael confirmed when we interviewed him for our podcast that Steve Newlin is a vampire! He even chatted about getting fitted for his fangs.
