Random Thoughts Episode 5.05 ‘Let’s Boot ‘N Rally’

Posted by Lynnpd On July - 9 - 201232 COMMENTS

Wow, they certainly got things going in this week’s episode. So far this season it appears that all has been buiding up to this. Not only do we get to Russell, but we also see Sookie get it on, if not with Alcide. This episode included a lot of dramatic impact with the shooting of Sam and Luna and the reveal about Terry’s past and the IFRIT. I applaud the new writer, Angela Robinson for her talents. I’m really excited for next week.

Below are a few of my random thoughts about this episode:

The Search for Russell

Unfortunately, for Alcide (especially), the boys, vampires Eric and Bill that is, barge in on the beginning of Sookie and Alcide’s love making. Well, actually, the love making had already been interrupted since Sookie just barfed all over Alcide right as they enter. However, the intention was to break it up, and they succeeded. Poor Alcide still has to wait to taste some of Sookie. Bill and Eric convince Sookie that she can help them find out from Alcide’s employee Doug, who dug up Russell which should help them to locate him. The four of them go and find Doug and when Sookie reads his mind, it’s revealed to her that it was a woman vampire with the same necklace as Nora who dug him up. They then take Alcide’s van and go to a remote location (again as directed by Sookie reading Doug’s mind) to find him. While on their way, in the back of the van, Bill and Eric are arguing over Nora. Bill thinks she is the traitor and Eric does not. However, they are interrupted when Bill gets a call from Molly at the Authority saying that their IStakes have been activated and they have until dawn to find Russell or, they will no longer be “too cute to be goo.”

As they enter the building, Bill tells Sookie, to stay behind with Alcide and Doug as Eric and he will find Russell. Sookie is having none of it, she wants the adventure and reminds them of her microwave fingers and how she is not afraid. She’s says she’s also seen enough horror movies to know that you don’t split up when there’s a crazed killer on the loose. Wow, Sookie sure is getting her mojo on in this episode!

They enter the building to fine it rat infested. The rats are feeding on body parts and there are piles of dead bodies that are covered with them. They then stumble upon a room where live people are hanging on hooks (presumably dinner for Russell) and one of them yells for help. He points them to the location down the hall where they find Russell in bed and he says, “It took you long enough, what infernal racket have you been making?“ And as Eric comes up and greets him saying, “Hello old friend, do you remember me? We’ve come ot finish what we started.”  Russell replies, “As my great love Talbot used to say when we were buck hunting, “give it your best shot.” Just then we see Alcide turns into a wolf, as he is presumably in control by Russell.

In a very dramatic scene showing all sorts of things going on in Bon Temps, Roman preaches to the Authority to convince them that he means what he says, “we will not standby by as zealots are trying to steal the righteousness of our cause.”

Tara, Pam and Jessica at Fangtasia

When we see Tara in this week’s episode, we find her walking through Fangtasia looking very sexy in a lovely blue outfit, as given to her by Pam. Pam is impressed with the new look, but tells her she is to be a bartender and when Tara tries to protest in her typical Pam way, cuts her down and makes her see sense. When a human comes up to Tara to get a drink and she immediately tries to bite her, but Pam rushes in telling her that she is NEVER to eat someone in Fangtasia or in public at all.  She says,

“I saved your fucking life and lent you some truly exquisite clothes, but if you do anything to mess with Fangtasia, I will silver you and stick you in a coffin to rot until the next millenium.”

Later, Jessica walks in, comes up to the bar and starts talking to Tara about life as a vampire. She manages to soften Tara a bit so that she too begins to reveal her feelings to Jessica. They seem to be becoming BFF’s and get along. However, later as Tara is taking a break outside, she runs into Hoyt who propositions her. She says no and Hoyt asks why and she still refuses him, but it’s only temporary. We see Jessica feeding on a girl in one of the stalls in the bathroom who hears Hoyt’s voice in the next stall. She immediately stops her feeding and goes into the stall discovering Tara feeding on Hoyt. She attacks Tara and they start a girl fight right there. So much for being BFF’s.

Does Jessica still love Hoyt?  I think she does, but just wants to experience some life before settling down with him. And, for Tara I’m sure it doesn’t mean a thing. Poor Hoyt is just trying to “feel” something. He is truly a tragic figure this season.

Shape-shifters

When we left them last, Sam and Luna had been shot, presumably by some vampire/supernatural haters in a van. We first see Sam in the episode earlier when Jason and Andy are investigating the death of Emery and Suzanne. Sam tells Andy that he found them dead and he also reveals that they are shifters like him. Then, Sam goes to Luna’s house to presumably to inform her that their two friends have just been shot. After discussing it, Luna asks Sam to leave (we hear Emma making noise in her bedroom which Luna fears is her becoming a werewolf again). Sam agrees to leave but says he will look in on them in the morning. As soon as he goes out the door and into the yard, he is shot. Luna runs out and is also shot. We then see Emma come out of the house and when she sees the danger, she immediately shifts into a wolf and runs away. The scene ends with Sam and Luna dying and reaching for each other.

Do you think it’s possible that they are dead? I just can’t believe that Sam would be killed and it would be sad for Sam to die just as he seems to have finally found someone that he might be able to share his life with.

Terry, Patrick and IFRIT

In tonight’s episode we see Terry and Patrick almost lose their lives when their army buddy, who has gone a bit “bat crazy” decides if he kills them, he will be free of his daemons. However, when he starts to describe it all Terry says he has experienced the same thing and therefore, he convinces him to let them free. Patrick goes a long with it until they are set free, but immediately punches their friend and knocks him out cold. Terry is upset by this and is also fearful since we just saw him relive the killing of a women who right before she died, cursed him with IFRIT. This is what IFRIT means, I had to look it up:

Ifrit—also spelled, efreet, ifreet, afreet, afrite, and afrit (Arabic: ʻIfrīt: عفريت, pl ʻAfārīt: عفاريت)—are supernatural creatures in Arabic and Islamic cultures. They are in a class of infernal Jinn noted for their strength and cunning. An ifrit is an enormous winged creature of fire, either male or female, who lives underground and frequents ruins. Ifrits live in a society structured along ancient Arab tribal lines, complete with kings, tribes, and clans. They generally marry one another, but they can also marry humans. While ordinary weapons and forces have no power over them, they are susceptible to magic, which humans can use to kill them or to capture and enslave them. As with the jinn, an ifrit may be either a believer or an unbeliever, good or evil, but he is most often depicted as a wicked and ruthless being.

Terry runs out of the room and so does Patrick but not until he ties up their friend.  When they are outside, we see smoke come into the room filled with fire which immediately engulfs their friend as the scene ends.

I wonder about Terry and whether or not he will be able to conquer the daemons that have been plaguing him since his Iraq days. It’s really just his guilt, in my opinion, but this is True Blood, so anything is possible, especially supernatural beings.

Others Bon Temps Happenings

Lafayette is still haunted by his own daemons and is fed up with it. He smashes all the figurines of gods on his mantle and asks for Jesus to help him. Jesus shows up, well, just his head anyway, but his mouth is sewed shut even though he is attempting to tell Lafayette something. Then we see Ruby Jean, Lafayette’s mother in her hospital bed experiencing the same vision of Jesus, but she seems to understand what he’s trying to say and tells him that she will tell Lafayette.

At the end of last week’s episode we saw Jason and Andy being thrown out of the Faery bar onto the grass. Jason next wakes up at home naked, but not before he has a dream where he is wearing pjs’ from his childhood and is having breakfast with his parents as if he was 10. His parents immediately start gushing blood from vampire punctures on their necks and Jason wakes up. Andy too is found naked on his couch by Arlene who is aghast by his behavior.

Presumably, Jason will start looking for whoever killed his parents in future episodes and Andy, I’m sure hasn’t heard the last of Morilla.

I wonder if anyone is working at Merlotte’s these days?

Are you sure about Alcide changing at the asylum? Russel had were bodyguards, and Alcide said he smelled wolves there!(

Alex, I do think it’s Alcide, but your idea is intriguing and could very well be true. I actually hope you’re right. However, going forward with your idea, maybe Alcide changed because he knew other were’s were coming and he did so to protect Sookie? What do you think?

    chris Reply:

i think alcide changed to help sookie unless he is pissed she killed his girl friend u never know but it would be twisted if alcide is working with russel

Did you guys not see the preview for the next episodes? Alcide was definitely being dragged backwards by something. I think it might be the traitor vamp from the authority…or just a vamp.

  2. Shadaliza says:

The opening scene was hilarious. Sookie climbing into Alcide like he was a tree, I guess that’s the best way to film that scene because of the enormous height difference. When she puked over his shoes I laughed out loud. Sookie was very funny “it must be Thursday” and then stepping through the broken door.

Who was Jessica trying to convince that being a vampire is awesome? Tara or herself? Jessica is in desperate need of a vampire girlfriend to hang out with, that girl is so lonely.

Sam and Luna getting shot was totally unexpected. Are there a bunch of lunatics going around shooting shifters? They were masked, who are these people? Please don’t let Luna die and let Emma be safe as well (I am pretty sure Sam won’t die).

The scenes in the abandoned hospital were scary and reminded me of those torture porn movies with people hanging from meat hooks, I was on the edge of my seat. My money is on Salome, I think she released Russell and is a secret Sanguinista.
It all went very fast, either Alcide was grabbed and dragged off or he shifted and ran off to…. attack Russell’s werewolf bodyguards?

My heart goes out to Hoyt, he has lost his way.

Smokey from LOST has found its way to Bon Temps and is now called Ifrit, neat CGI but not sure what to think of the thing.

Jesus’ head was freaky, hilarious though that Ruby Jean had no problem understanding him. I wonder what he was saying, words of wisdom for Laffy?

I agree with you completely. I don’t think Nora released Russell, my money’s on Salome. She looked nervous when Dieter mentioned Bill and Eric had been to a parking lot in Shreveport.

Sookie was fantastic this episode, flawless acting from Anna Paquin! It really seems like the show has hit its stride; full of dangerous, tempting cliffhangers.
Personally I can’t wait for Jason’s storyline, I want to see more of the fairies and watch the Stackhouse siblings discover their heritage.
Luna getting shot broke my heart, I LOVED Luna! I’m sad and scared for Sam and Emma.

Hoyt…oh, Hoyt, you are knee-deep in the Kreepy Korner, as Andy and Brian from BloodWork hilariously put it. Tara was great this episode, finally back to her Season 1 persona…until she fed on Hoyt. Really? Hoyt? After you wonderfully sent him “home to his mama”?! That was the only thing pissing me off about this episode: Tara is three, four days old. There’s no way she can hold her own against Jess, seing how easily she overpowered Steve Newlin, baby vamp Tara shouldn’t be an issue. I hope the writer’s don’t forget they aren’t equally matched.

Thank you for the quick Random Thoughts of 5.05, extra fast. Here are mine:

Poor Alcide will have to wait longer……..

I feel opposite of you that they have dragged this finding Russell story out too long.
What I don’t understand is why Nora, if it’s her, didn’t used Doug as Russell’s first meal; why did they let him go?
I think Alcide shifted in a defensive mode for protection for he is being attacked. JMO
I think Lilith is behind Russell’s release, she reincarnated or whatever herself – I have not read the spoilers so am only guessing based on Nora’s prayers being answered.

Eric and Bill were great and I do feel for Eric for the gears in his brain are turning that he’s been possibly decieved by his sister Nora. (I think Salome is bad too)

Luna & Sam oh no! Shifter heal fast don’t they? Run Emma run.

Tara is still a mess I feel for her…. I loved Pam’s line, “no I want you to sit and play Scrabble” LOL

And I will alway feel for Hoyt!!!! and Jessica was so sweet and as Shad and Lynn says needing a BFF giving Tara some newbie advice.

Jason will be taking up the anti vampire cause again? How will Andy and the Fairies fit in to all this?

    Terry

Terry’s story is compelling, dark and complex and I will let it play out untill I comment much more. I just hope Terry can come to grips with his past and get help with dealing for what transpired back there. He needs to tell someone.

Is it just me? This season is not working at all for me. Too many plots, too many characters, too confusing. Just sort of a mess. I hate to say it but I’m bored for the first time with True Blood. The writing is sloppy and wonder if that has to do with Alan Ball withdrawing. Sorry but that’s just what I’m feeling and wonder if anyone else is seeing the same thing.

    Shadaliza Reply:

Sorry, but I don’t agree. so far I am very pleased with this season, except for some little things here and there. I am not sure yet how the Terry storyline fits in and it looks they brought Smokey over from LOST.

I love the interaction between Bill and Eric and now also Sookie, Alcide and Russell have come together in one storyline.

I bet Sam and Luna’s story is connected to it somehow as well, the hate against sups is still very strong.

The Terry plot is especially tedious. Too bad because I like Tod Lowe as a character but this is just way too much backstory. I like him being a nut at Merlotte’s not in Iraq!

S5 is working for me I just wish Terry would not have taken and a multi elisode road trip and Russell would have been found quicker….. the Authority/Vampire concentration is what I love.

I applaud the writers for actually skipping secondary characters some ep., i.e. Holly, Luna, Rev. Steve or Arlene – we’ve only seen glimpses or not at all.

I’m mostly worried by Jessica’s comment to Tara they they will live forever as a foreshadowing that they wont. Given that a Vamp gets killed in front of hoyt given the preview after the episode ended for next week makes me Sad that its jessica who gets killed next episode.

I like the whole Ifrit idea with Terry. but mostly goign WTH to Jesus’s head.

And welcome back Russell the only thing saving this season.

This was a great episode. Everything was connected and moved smoothly and fast. I’m not in love with Terry’s storyline, but I don’t mind it. It looks like it may end up connected to Lafayette, who may have to exorcise the Afrit or something. Loved the scene in which Sookie throws up on Alcide, and Bill and Eric are watching. Priceless. Watching Pam, Tara, and Jessica interact was interesting too. Can’t wait for the next episode and the showdown between Sookie and Russell.

    Lynnpd Reply:

Yes, Rina I so agree with you. This episode moved really well. It took a long time to really get things going this season, but now I think things will be fast paced. Having Denis O’Hare back is a gift we can savor.

  7. Selle says:

I still enjoy the show although it has a different flavor this season. But gosh darn it, there’s no romance, zip, zero, nada.

There is, however, evidence that Jason isn’t the only horny Stackhouse. LOL. No moss grows on Sookie’s back as she burns rubber on Bill’s and Eric’s hearts. If she hadn’t puked on Alcide’s feet, he would have been the big Number Three in less than one month in Sookie-time. And that whole scene with her & Alcide and the local vampire boys’ club peeping, the writers coulda-woulda-shoulda made so much more out of it. It would have been funny if Eric or Bill had said to Alcide “need a little help there? Looks like you do”. Instead, their reaction is minimalist, which can be made to fit but doesn’t satisfy my wish to see more depth in some of these scenes.

  8. Pops says:

Very good episode. I am not much into the Terry storyline. It’s just too much to add another major story into an already crowded season. Sam and Luna’s story is so sad. Seeing her face lying on the grass looking at Sam was very sad. Also, seeing Emma looking at her mom lying there was too heartbreaking. She’s so young, where can she run now? This is an interesting storyline that should have been given more than a little over 2 minutes. Tara’s story is great! I love seeing her bitterness over her whole situation. She’s going to be a great vampire. Jason is maturing. He’s come a long way and it’s been great watching it. I’m still trying to decide about The Authority’s story. Chris Meloni is good, and I’ll be watching to see where this story goes. It’s a good season, better than 4 in my opinion.

    Gigi Reply:

Like many others, the Terry storyline is just not grabbing me – but I DO like Terry as a character (and actor). Just that the storyline runs too far “off” the main storyline. Reminds me of the whole Lafayette/baby arc last season…too much about something that really went nowhere. I was getting tired of Sookie’s whining, but she had some pretty sharp lines in this episode – good to see her taking charge instead of crying like the perennial victim. Actually, there were some good lines all around this week – Bill, Eric, Alcide and Pam specifically. Pam is really looking sharp and Tara is absolutely beautiful – so glad she didn’t die. Jessica looked really good too, and I’m happy to see that she may still care for Hoyt. Sam and Luna’s story is really sad – I hated seeing them both down on the grass. I had hoped that Sam would find some happiness (for at least a season or two!)- Luna and Emma are perfect for him. I have to say I love Emma, and I wish she’d be in more of each episode. I thought the wolf-pup in the nightgown was so cute 2 weeks ago, but Emma out on that porch, looking so scared was priceless. Sam’s warning “Run, Emma!” was heartbreaking – and although it was scary, when she ran and then shifted into that little wolf, I was saying “YEAH, YOU GO GIRL!!!!!” Let’s can some of the other side stories and get more of that arc…WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO SAM, LUNA AND EMMA????? THAT IS INTERESTING! Hope that somehow this can work out well.

  9. Alexis Manning says:

I wouldn’t worry about Sam. If you’ve read the series of novels the show is based on up to book five, you’ll know why I say that (Alan Ball & company have admittedly departed a lot from the books, but I don’t think he’ll go the route of having one of the main characters die, at least not yet, possibly never) ;). Luna, though, is another story. I suspect she’ll die from her gunshot wounds (which is really sad for Sam, because like you said, he’s finally found someone he can have a life with), and Sam will either end up raising Emma, or because she’s a werewolf, just like Marcus’s mother said she’d be, Sam will take her to the pack and let them raise her. Another possibility is she’ll encounter one of them while running away, and they’ll take her in. Yet another, but probably not likely one, cool as it would be (at least to me), is Sam will find her, and because he’s not a werewolf himself, he’ll ask Alcide, who IS, to take care of her. Either way, both Sam & Emma will live :].

    [Reply]

    Lynnpd Reply:

While I don’t think what happens in the books would stop Alan Ball from killing off a character, I agree with you that Sam will be around. It is much more likely, as you say, to kill Luna. Poor Emma motherless, how sad. I think it would be so poignant if Sam could raise Emma, BUT somehow I fear that since she is a werewolf and not a shifter, the chances of that happening are very few.

    [Reply]

    Alexis Manning Reply:

True. *Nods* It didn’t stop him from doing the reverse with Lafayette.

It is :(. *Nods* She no longer has a father (though Marcus wasn’t exactly the nicest guy, to put it VERY mildly), and most likely won’t have a mother come next episode. Poor Emma’s in for a very sad, tragic life if that’s what the writers are planning to do ={.

I do, too, and I think you’re probably right that Sam won’t be the person who raises her. One way or another, unless Sam finds her and takes her to Alcide, and/or he agrees to become packmaster, Emma’s going to end up with her father’s pack one way or another, which is exactly what Luna doesn’t/didn’t want.

Well done, Lynn. The conclusion of the first scene between Alcide and Sookie was great fun and totally unexpected. Kudos to Miss Sookie for putting herself out there. Her microwave fingers and the sun are the best deterrents against Russell. And speaking of KRE, it’s great to have him back. I fear for Lafayette and am hopeful Ruby Jean can decipher Jesus’ words. I think we’ve lost Luna, but hope to goodness Sam can be saved. A new determination on Jason’s part to go after supernaturals and vampires, especially. Did the vamps really do in his parents? And how will that knock down, drag out between Jessica and Tara end? So many questions for episode 6 to hopefully resolve.

I loved this episode, from Sookie ralphing on Alcide’s shoes to Bill and Sookie holding hands and giving each other deep, meaningful looks…it was great! Funny and harrowing and everything in between.

The only story I’m not into is Terry’s, but I hope all of this buildup will mean something.

What I liked is the similarity to the book in regards to Sookie Eric and Bill. Bill becomes her friend, holds her hand, asks if she’s ready. Eric doesn’t need to ask, he knows, the tension between them is palpable, the way Sookie looks at him when he says ‘clearly’, he still loves her but he’s hurt and won’t show anyone that, but he leads when going into Russells room, he’ll have to go through Eric first, love it. It feels like Season two again, she was the angry one but now it’s in reverse Eric angry for her rejection, I love sexual tension :)

I love this season Tara as a Vamp, Pam the maker they are more similar then they think and can grow to be the ultimate family fr-enemies and just think of all the non stop one liners ,Sookie becoming more independent, the tying in of the main characters, Emma to Alcide as a mentor ,Sam as a stepdad to Emma not ready to speculate if Luna is dead. Clearly Anna has chemistry with all 3 men in her life anyone she chooses it’s bound to be hot. I want to see Jessica and Tara become friends regardless of the fight, don’t really think that was a deal-breaker. Likin Mr.Meloni’s character looking foward to seeing him face off with Edgington ,Rev. Newlon is hysterical as a vampire
The flow of the core characters all tie in.
What I do not feel fits is the storyline with Terry, on its own its well written but doesn’t have a place in the show. I like the characters of Terry and Arlene but as they were in previous seasons.
Although Sookie is part Fae finding more of who she is,is good, just not interested in it having a storyline of its own.
Don’t Know why they have changed Lafayette so drastically,he can still grieve but his history as a character was more resilient I would more picture him saying “Bitch if you don’t step off I will curse your dumb ass”. The only reason I believe they are playing up the demon passed from Jesus would be to help with the Ifrit. The whole storyline is just taking time from what I am truly interested in watching.
