The mystery surrounding Lafayette

Who is attached to the foot with the red painted toenails that sticks out of Andy Bellefleur’s car in the season finale?

The readers of Charlaine Harris’ books however know that Lafayette left this world in an unfortunate manner and to sustain that theory in episode 11 we see Lafayette painting his toenails red while watching “his” senator on tv.

But if Lafayette is indeed dead, then why was Nelsan Ellis on the season 2 set? And why is his name mentioned in the casting call for a Nikki character for episode 2.10?

[NIKKI] A clueless, 20-something sorority girl with her name on her T-shirt, she shows up at Lafayette’s looking to score some V so she can get through her finals. Despite evidence that it’s not a good time for her to be there, she announces that she won’t leave until he helps her.

There have been rumors of Lafayette appearing in flashbacks, but TV Guide gives us a little spoiler that indicates that our favorite short cook/V-dealer might still be with us.

TV Guide: “Since the season premiere picks up right where we left off, the victim’s identity is revealed in short order. As you might have already guessed, Season 2′s first casualty is related to Tara, but not in a way that you will guess. At first blush, the significance of said death will not be apparent, but just wait! Also, a minor character’s drinking problem will resurface — hilariously.”

The dead body with the red toenails is related to Tara, but not in a way that you will guess. That pretty much rules out Lafayette. It could be Tara’s mother, Lettie Mae, but she is the minor character with the drinking problem that will resurface.

The only other african-american related to Tara is Miss Jeanette. They are not related in the sense that they are family, but Miss Jeanette is partly responsible for the Tara’s current situation.

    This is very interesting

And I didn’t know that Nelsan has been on the set this season. Cool! :-)

This sure looks like a man’s foot. I have been hoping against hope that our beloved Lafayette had not been treated to a dirt nap and he would once again grace us with his wonderfulness. But who else could it be? Tara’s father? Perhaps he came, naked, to Merlotte’s to re-connect with his daughter.

    Dorothea (LISMlvr) Reply:

    Could be Sterling’s foot.

    Anything is possible. :-)

Either way, this has been a well-kept secret for the past 7 months.
Sterling, as for the toe theory…I think it looks close. What about hair? Does Laffy have hairy feet/toes or not? And as for the finals thing, with the girl coming to get the V, it could be a flashback? What time of year does this all take place?
I don’t know, maybe I’m ‘dumber than a box of hair,’ but I’m not cashing in on who it is til I see it.

If you slow down the promos of this scene, you can clearly see a man’s naked chest in the car – so I’m not buying it. (Although I would love to be wrong.) The only other relative “mentioned” is Lafayette’s mother – Lettie Mae’s sister – she comments about her to Tara, although we never meet her.

If Nelsan has been on the set, I think it’s because they are filming flashbacks, which would make perfect sense as Sookie tries to discover who killed him.

I like the idea that it might be Miss Jeanette. I can see Maryann wanting to get rid of the local demon exorcist! :-)

Does TV Guide throw out red herrings, intentional or not?

    Dorothea (LISMlvr) Reply:

Agreed, it’s Miss Jeanette. Maryann figures to play a major part in this season, and having her off a character in the first episode makes her an important player right off the bat.

    Susan Reply:

Unless it was Bill who killed Ms. Jeanette. He did feed on somebody – but – maybe not, why would it take two weeks for the body to show up in Andy’s car, and who would have put it there? Not Bill. Looks like Maryann’s handiwork. She’s not too happy with Andy anyway.

I think it being Bill is too obvious. I’m actually really liking the idea that Maryann killed someone. But what was that with Lafayette jumping up on the dumpster? Arghhh! We’ll know before too long, at least!

Lafayette’s mother is dead. If you recall when Tara and Lettie Mae were walking down the road for the first visit to Miz Jeanette, Lettie Mae said something about her sister being dead and not having to see her deviant son.

But if I remember it correctly, Lafayette is Tara’s cousin in the show. There was a scene where they both attended a party, Tara told a guy who approached her that “she is watching her cousin hitting on the straightest guy in that place”. Also, in Episode 12, after the “vampire wedding” news was aired, Sam asked Tara where his cousin maybe.

Anyways, I like Lafayette and I would like to see him again.

If that is Miss Jeanette or Lettie Mae then both women must be on steroids because that is one masculine foot sticking out of Andy’s car.

    [Reply]

    cocoablossoms Reply:

masculine or just big??? i used to work at a shoe boutique. i’ve seen all kinds of women’s feet. that could definitely be a woman’s foot, not a dainty, pretty one, but not every woman has “feminine” feet.

    [Reply]

    Susan Reply:

And if I recall correctly, Ms. Jeanette was a large woman.

  10. cocoablossoms says:

i thought before that it was only wishul thinking that he’s alive. but now, i think lafayette is a were (the spoiler with the girl getting “v” mentions she came at a bad time, maybe he was shifting?). i think miss jeanette is dead, possibly either drained by bill (had to feed on someone) or killed by maryanne and left in andy’s car as revenge for talking back to her. i think lettie mae finds out miss jeanette was a hoax and falls off the wagon.

It couldn’t be Bill, it’s been mentioned that vampires have always been able to cover up their crimes pretty good. Look what happened to the Rattrays.

  11. Does Lafayette’s second toe ( in the painting toe nails scene ) look longer than the second toe in the backseat of the car picture ? The picture from the car looks like all piggys are in line , the picture from the painting scene looks like the second toe longer than the big toe?

The Lafayette character is so popular, really. How could he kill AB off ? He will return.

There is a shot of Miss Jeanette’s feet that I always wondered about. I played and replayed it trying to figure out why they had taken this shot. When Tara goes to get the Pepto Bismol for her mother (aisle 7!) she confronts Miss Jeanette at the end of an aisle. There is a quick shot of their feet. Should check out the colour/color of nail polish she had on. The purpose of this shot never made sense – unless they did this to mislead us again!! And what about Big John?? We don’t see him in relation to Tara but she must know him as he works in the same place.

    [Reply]

    Shadaliza Reply:

I doubt that Big John would paint his toenails, unless he is a drag queen by night.

    LOL LOL LOL!!

    [Reply]

    buellblaster Reply:

Miss Jeanette had on white footie socks with grey shoes you can not see her toes and her feet do look to be big.
But Tara does say, “Once my mama finds out about you she will be drinking again.” So maybe it is her dead foot and Lettie starts drinking again once she finds out she was duped (cocoablossoms theory?)

    MyBabyBill Reply:

Yes, Gym. That shot of her feet in the drug store comes in handy right about now.

  13. Susan says:

The TV Guide said that the person in the car is “related to Tara, but not in the way you might think”, so it sounds like it doesn’t have to be a blood RELATIVE. She could be related to Tara by her relationship with her – related to the Tara storyline, etc. I think those words are chosen that way on purpose. I’m voting for Ms. Jeanette!

    [Reply]

    Susan Reply:

I’m sorry, I should have written, “but not in the way you will guess.”

    [Reply]

  14. BabyBite says:

I vote for Ms Jeannette too, especially since she likes to hang out in the woods and we know there’s dangerous stuff lurking out there (i.e. Maryann, the demon/minatour, etc.) I also noticed that they showed the feet when Tara confronted her in the store (as mentioned earlier) but I was looking at Tara’s feet. I thought it was weird that Tara was standing on her toes when she pushed Ms Jeannette but if MJ was wearing red polish then it probably was to throw us off. Hmmmm….

  15. Susan says:

Okay, this is my favorite speculation yet. A poster on another site suggested that it’s Lettie Mae in the car and that she has been turned into a vampire. This works because

1). It get’s Lettie Mae out of the way so that Maryann can have more power over Tara

2). Turns out to be the human that Bill fed from, and

3). As the TV guide suggests, “Also, a minor character’s drinking problem will resurface — hilariously.” This would definitely be a drinking problem!

I don’t think this is the case, but I thought it was funny.

    [Reply]

    Eric's Lover Reply:

No.2 is more likely and an interesting theory, however, was she a willing donor? Makes it all more interesting.

    [Reply]

    cocoablossoms Reply:

but bill wouldn’t turn her. he already has enough worries with jessica. i think he fed on miss jeanette or maryanne planted her to stick it to andy. or both. maybe maryanne found her after bill was done and she just seized the day so to speak.

    [Reply]

    Eric's Lover Reply:

yeah I don’t think Bill got carried away and accidentally kill her.

    [Reply]

    sweetwater Reply:

or rather, cocoablossoms, she seized the night.

    [Reply]

    MyBabyBill Reply:

Oooooo…Lettie Mae as a vampire. That IS a drinking problem. What a scary solution. But I like it!!!

    [Reply]

    SterlingSilverCharm Reply:

Th minor character’s drinking problem is probably Chris Bauer’s Andy Bellefleur. He has a drinking problem.

I think it is either Miss Jeanette or Lettie Mae in the back of the car, or maybe it is Lafayette and he’s passed out. ( not dead, not turned maybe he was on a bender ) and maybe there is ANOTHER death in the parking lot.

Lots to think about and 2 weeks to speculate. LOL!

    [Reply]

    sweetwater Reply:

You may be right about Andy having the drinking problem because at the engagement party, Andy said he didn’t drink (after he was offered one) – he was drinking soda, I think – sounds like a recovering alcoholic. But then, in the last episode, he got totally smashed at Merlotte’s.

Would we describe him as a minor character?

    [Reply]

  16. Selle says:

I think the minor character with the resurfacing drinking problem will be Andy Bellefleur. It seems from the last episode in season 1 that when he gets upset he gets smashed. ….I was thinking last night that it totally could be Miss Jeannette in the back of Andy’s car because she’s always out in the woods and don’t Maenads like to hang out in the woods. When Sookie gets scratched, isn’t she out in the woods too? ….As far as who Bill drank from, I think it was Lafayette because when I watched the last episode from S1 on my new hi-tech TV, it sure sounded like that growl Bill gives before he bites sometimes. Also, if Lafayette, after being glamoured to forget about the bite, noticed fang marks on his neck, he’d freak out since he’s afraid of revenge from the vampires since Eddie’s disappearance.

    [Reply]

    MyBabyBill Reply:

Selle, I too was thinking that Andy might be the one with the minor drinking problem! But then it made me think that maybe it was Tara’s mother in that back seat and I don’t want that! Tara could not handle that. And she’s gonna have enough on her plate in the upcoming season. Can both Andy and Tara’s mother have a relapse maybe? Maybe they’ll end up together, lol.

  17. Yamena says:

Maybe he was beaten up and put into Bellefleur’s car, after being taken hostage by the senator’s office. Maybe he’s unconscious and appears to be dead.

AB uses twist and turns from the book and I believe he will continue to do so. Lafayette brings much flavor to TB.

Still, Maryann could have killed Ms. Jeanette because of Tara, I’m pretty sure she knows what Ms. J did. AB did mentioned that Tara’s mother will re-appear again in Tara’s life.

    [Reply]

    mizmode Reply:

I always assumed dead but not unconcious (a good possibility). This is too much to think about. LOL

    [Reply]

  18. Susan says:

Another twist could be what would happen to Tara if the body turns out to be Ms. Jeanette and others at the pharmacy heard Tara threaten to kill Ms. Jeanette for being a phony. Tara could be under suspicion with Andy and Bud. This information would have to come out and Tara’s mom would hear about it and start drinking again.

Or….perhaps Maryann, the maenad who like drinking, mayhem, chaos and debauchery influences Lettie Mae to fall off the wagon.

I just love all this speculation! Can’t wait until June 14th!

    [Reply]

  19. buellblaster says:

Just noticed that the tv guide review says, “..in short order” as in Short-Order-Cook! UH OH! Lafayette should have quit his job at Merlotte’s and just stuck with the road crew.

See, I was thinking that too. There’s a lot of red herrings in that article. LOL

  20. mizmode says:

I would never guess it could be Miss Jeanette. And although it says related, “related” in this instance may not be as in family/blood relation, just maybe associated with as in related.

I heard about the flashbacks too. But who knows if it’s Lafayette, or anyone else that is dead in that car. I’m tired of guessing. LOL I just want June 14th to be here NOW. :-p

“At first blush, the significance of said death will not be apparent, but just wait!” This quote has my mind racing, beyond who it could be. and the casting call that involves LaFayette, it is never mentioned that she actually “SEES” him, just that she won’t leave until he helps! So who knows, I really thought this was the end of him, but now I am not sure, but I am sure of one thing AB knows what he is doing to get us all worked up, doesn’t he?!?!?!!!

After thinking about it, I found the scene where Lafayette was painting his toenails…he never finished doing it, at least in that scene…the foot in the back of the car had ALL of its nails painted. I think that the last episode had more than one red herring.
