Despite the efforts of Bill and Eric to get rid of Russell Edgington once and for all, the ex-king of Mississippi will be back in season 5 and mostly likely with a vengeance.
Considering the bad physical condition Russell was in and the fact that he was silvered when he was buried in concrete, makes it highly improbably that he managed to escape without any outside help. Even Eric needed Pam’s help to be freed from the fresh concrete because the silver handcuffs had left him completely powerless.
But who released Russell from his grave?
The only person who knew what was buried underneath the construction site was Alcide, but I think we can exclude him as an accomplice unless he hopes that Russell finishes off both Eric and Bill so he can make his move on Sookie.
From the construction worker who discovered the hole in the parking garage we learned that a vampire was involved, because the man was glamoured.
It could be that Russell has another progeny besides his late husband Talbot, Russell is an ancient vampire and it’s very likely that he turned several humans over the years. He could have used vampire telepathy to summon his progeny. The question remains why it took the progeny so long to get there? Russell remained buried for a year, maybe the messages sent that way have a limited radius and the progeny has to be close by to receive the signal.
Russell’s vampire child could be a new character or possibly someone we already know: Reverend Steve Newlin. Steve was missing for quite a while and he did sport a nice pair of vampire teeth when he showed up at Jason’s doorstep.
Or maybe the progeny is a member of the Authority. Nan Flanagan revealed last season that there are fractions within the Authority that don’t agree with the agenda and Russell has no respect at all for the Authority, so there might be a link there. Or the Authority itself freed Russell to use him as a tool to hunt down Bill and Eric in exchange for amnesty.
Bill and Eric seem the least possible candidates for setting Russell free, but they are in deep trouble now that the Authority has issued death sentences for the both of them and Russell could prove to be a powerful ally in the battle against the Authority.
Who do you think released Russell Edgington? Post it in the comments below.

I’ve often wondered if Tony, the young man plucked out of an alley and paid to have sex with Russell, was turned by him. We saw him killed (supposedly); his face became Talbot’s, affording Russell a chance to say goodbye to his lover. What if Tony did not die but was turned?

Interesting theory.

Adding on here: Tony would do his sire’s bidding and unearth him. There would have to be a means of communication between RE and his progeny. I figure that wouldn’t be too difficult for a vampire as ancient as Russell Edgington.

I´ve thought about it and u´ve got to remember that in the True Blood universe, the turning process requieres the newly turned to drink loads of vampire blood and to maintain the body intact.
Russell put a stake through Tony´s heart thus, avoiding him to become a vampire.
My own thesis´s got to do with the new vampires , specially Salomé, the infamous daughter of King Herod.
According to what´s said in the show, Russell manipulated every single human story arc related to power, in ancient times that was mainly about the role of Kings, therefore, i´m just assuming he did his worse by turning King Herod´s daughter into one of his alleys

Can’t WAIT for season 5!! And I LOVED Russell as the Vampire King!!!

What about the Queen? Any possibility it could be her?

I don’t think the fairies would risk it. They would be unearthing a weakened vampire, who had been starving for a year. Once Russell was able to move, it would be lights out for that fairy. He no doubt had other progeny and possibly was able to summon any of them.
As for why it took a year, I’m sure we’ll find out.

What motive could the fairies possibly have to release Russell? He would kill them all for a chance to walk in the sun.

Pam dug him up!! She dug Eric up. She knows Russell is buried there. She needs to get rid of Sookie

Really ? Pam said ” How could I LOOSE him to someone named Sookie”. I think Pam is desperate to get her maker back. However, Alan Ball has – Out Foxed -me every season .LOL! Bring on Season 5! Can’t wait.

Eric killed Russell’s husband, I would think he would come after Eric first and then Sookie.

That’s a very good Question? Who did dig out Russell Edgington?
Russell was “King Of Mississippi” but not “VAMPIRE KING”.
That’s Felipe De Castro,King of Las Vegas.
He’s the Head Vampire that everyone reports to.

That’s in the books though… the show has The Authority instead to oversee the monarchs of each state.

Felipe is not the King of all vampires–just of Nevada and Louisiana after the takeover in Book 8. There a monarch for every state, and there is a vampire council described in Book 6 that judges vampires. That’s probably what AB used as the basis for creating the Authority in TB.

An Authority member who agrees with Edgington is my guess.

Well, Vampires and heavy silver chains don’t go well together, so there might have been someone else involved to free Russel, than just one Vamp. In my head, Newlin and Debbie joined forces. Newlin as Russels progeny and Debbie back on V wanting “the good old times” and Russel as a willing blood donor back. Debbie is the perfect tool to send for Sookie, too. Debbie wants revenge and Russel, well I think he’s the kind of “an eye for an eye, a Lover for a Lover” person. So, by having V-addict Debbie shoot Sookie, he would get his revenge for Talbot by taking Sookie from Eric. Actually, it would be a “2 for1″ deal, because he’d also hurt Bill. And HE didn’t do it, it would have been Debbie.
Just my thoughts. But as I learned, it’s hard to foretell the future when it comes to TrueBlood (which is part of why I love it), so I might be toootally wrong and something absolutely different’s going to happen. CAN’T WAIT!

Yes, it does.
She might be dead now, but how do we know what happened before she went to Sookies house? Debbie might have been there to help free Russel (it was one of Alcides sites & she was living with him, so I’m sure she knew, where to look). Afterwards Russel gave her his blood (maybe as a “Thank you” and Deb was clearly on V when she was at Sookies’) and sent her to kill Sookie. Which she tried, shot Tara and got killed herself.
Following this thought, if Tara should be turned (which I actually don’t think, it would be too ironic and foreseeable) it would be by Russel waiting outside. Remember Sookie crying ” Help, ANYBODY”? I like the thought if him being Taras maker. Sookies best friend turned by Russel and becoming what she hates most. As I said, I din’t see that happening though.

Pam was my very first thought when they showed the hole in the concrete. But isn’t that too obvious? I mean, with such a brilliant team of writters, may be there’s going to be some surprise there.

Hee hee! Wow, what a twist that would be!
I wonder if one of the new vampires that there have been casting calls for is one of Russell’s other vampire children? Salome would be 2000, that’s 800 years younger than Russell, so she could definitely be a candidate.
I’m pretty sure that Steve Newlin has only been missing for six months, and Russell has been interred for a year, so it couldn’t have been Russell that turned him.

Shadaliza Reply:

yes, Salome could be Russell progeny. Now that could turn out to be very interesting since she is so powerful.
I am not exactly sure when Steve went missing, it’s hard to keep track of the timeline sometimes.

It was mentioned on one of the news reports on the TV in season four that he’d been missing for six months. However, the Fellowship of the Sun website says he’s been missing for ten months. The Tainted Love comics also refer to him going missing some time in the year between seasons three and four.

My money is on Pam and Ginger. Pam is so desparate to get Eric back, she probably acted in haste without really thinking through what she was doing helping him escape.
[Reply]
I haven’t pinned anyone down yet. Just when I think I may be getting close to figuring it out, I think AB may throw a zinger in just to shock us and we will not have seen it coming.
Fun reading everyone’s theories.

What if he was freed in the Marnias attack on vampires? At least if it helped him get out …
[Reply]
Eric, Bill, Pam and Alcide are the only ones who know where he is. Safe to say that Eric, Bill and Pam wouldn’t dig him up. Alcide wouldn’t dig him up either. Russell wants them all dead. They are not that dumb.
Even though Nan talked about “other factions within the AVL” I don’t think it’s anyone there since Russell is a loose cannon and they wanted him gone. And we do not have any proof that they knew where Russell was. Doubt Eric (or Bill for that matter) would have said a thing.
Steve couldn’t have been turned by Russell since Steve went missing 6 months AFTER Russell was buried. Personally I think it was Nan who turned Steve (or someone in the AVL).
Early in season 3, Bill was able to summon Jessica to a place and late in season 3, Eric was able to do the same with Pam. It’s reasonable to conclude that it was another child of Russell’s who dug him up. I’m leaning to it being Salome.
